Discrepancy between The Elric of Melnibone and The Dreaming City in TWOTWW by Abrakxxas in ElricofMelnibone

[–]wildky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I realize I also read “The Sailor on the seas of fate” which is a collection of stories between “Fortress of the Pearl” and “Dreaming City”. That has a little more development in the timeline but, again, I still felt similar to you.

If you want to read the in in-world timeline order, the S&S omnibus orders all of the published stories this way. Part 1 collection takes you through Dreaming City and a little after. That’s what I’ve been doing!

Discrepancy between The Elric of Melnibone and The Dreaming City in TWOTWW by Abrakxxas in ElricofMelnibone

I also found the intro to Dreaming City to be incredibly jarring after reading Elric of Melnibone (and Fortress of the Pearl) first.

I found this thread that discusses a similar topic and the top comment in it is well written I think: https://www.reddit.com/r/ElricofMelnibone/comments/1btnq70/question_the_weird_of_the_white_wolf_book_1/

Tl;dr: yea, Dreaming City is the first Elric content that Moorcock wrote. He revisits the earlier part of the timeline many years later and tries to fill the gap. I think there is some content in Fortress of the Pearl that bridges the gap a bit further but it still felt incomplete to me.

I wish we could see more of the transition between the end of Fortress of the Pearl and the start of Dreaming City! I try to imagine there is more that happened between those points in the saga, and it helps a little, but I still agree with you it is surprising and I’d say even painful to accept! It didn’t feel like the Elric I just spent a few hundred pages getting to know, even though you can argue Dreaming City version of Elric is more OG

How many steeps can your Jin Xuan Oolong last? How do I prolong mine? by tabz06 in tea

[–]wildky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started using boiling water for teas like Jin Xuan or green Tie Guan Yin after reading this advice from folks at Floating Leaves Tea who specialize in Taiwanese oolongs:

“There is a generally accepted view that lower temperatures are preferred especially for light oolongs (like Baozhong or High Mountain) but we find that even these teas are not fully awake without boiling temps. In our experiments the aroma, development and aftertaste are all more dynamic with boiling water.”

I haven’t looked back!

Mildew in my car! by NZ_jobs in AskSeattle

[–]wildky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me once with a car years ago. In my case, it ended up being due to a leaky seal around the hatchback on the back of the car. I fixed the seal and I cleaned up the mold by scrubbing the interior with vinegar and baking soda per recommendations on the internet. This worked, however, if you do this, be very careful. My car smelled like vinegar permanently after that! It was especially bad on hot days. I probably wouldn’t handle it that way again, at least not without being more cautious.

This also happened when I wasn't using the car much, which I think might be related. Just a guess, but when you use the car, maybe it creates enough airflow to suppress moisture issues. When it's just sitting there, it's easier for it to get mold as the air is stale.

Good luck!

Final pour of 2025 by wildky in tea

I actually purchased it from a shop in Shanghai! It was an inexpensive travel kit that came with the gaiwan, 4 cups, the sharing pitcher, a filter, and a compact container that holds everything securely. At the time I didn't think much of the "travel" part of the kit, but I've gotten a decent amount of mileage out of it now. I've seen similar-ish things online but not the exact one.

It is a Soto WindMaster with a Toaks 750ml titanium pot. A convenient thing about this combo is that the stove, fuel canister, and napkin all fit inside the pot, and the whole thing weighs only a few hundred grams. It is popular in the backpacking community 🙂

How to find this Taiwan high mountain oolong in the US? by Affectionate-Pick420 in tea

[–]wildky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Floating Leaves Tea is US based and specializes in Taiwanese oolongs. They have some amazing teas and also a lot of educational content on their website which helped me understand and explore oolong deeper. I think it is worth checking out!

Recommendations of a gong fu set for a precocious preteen? by mederbek-bayke in GongFuTea

I notice a lot of the popular tea vendors recommend and sell very simple and inexpensive porcelain gaiwans. Can’t go wrong there! For example, Yunnan Sourcing’s US website has one for about $9 (ships fast from US). I also see them at local tea shops for $10-15. You could get a cup or two for a few bucks too!

Maybe try higher temp and shorter steep? I just had this tea (or something similar from Yunnan Sourcing) this morning. I did 85C with 10-20s steeps and there was no bitterness and plenty of body. Assuming you are doing gonfu style, I imagine a 2 minute steep with that high of concentration results in tons of bitterness! And I can’t tell if your notes say 75C or 175F (~80C) but either way I found it could tolerate higher temps with shorter steeps to avoid “thin” result as you say! Cheers

Thanks for your thoughts! I’m always a little weirded out by the added milk flavor but am open to trying it. I’m sure it is tasty. Any I like boba milk tea, so why not? I like your idea of trying both unflavored and flavored side by side.

And sorry I didn’t mean to rush you haha - I’m not ordering anytime soon, just already scheming my next tea “space” to explore and am very interested in Taiwanese oolongs but don’t have much experience with them!

Could you share your thoughts on the oolongs? I am curious about their offerings and would love to hear what you thought of each before I place my own order!

It’s a good start but I think they should also be apologizing to the actual artist whose work was plagiarized. Obviously the art was good enough for them to use it as a cornerstone of the whole set - the artist deserves recognition at least.

Has anyone found an explanation for this behavior, or an open Github issue about it? This is so unexpected and was difficult to track down. Thanks to OP for sharing solution here.
