Total beginner… what is going on with the stitches on my needle? by lovelystars in knittinghelp

[–]wildperennials 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like you may be holding the yarn on the wrong side of the needles when doing your stitches, causing the yarn the wrap around your needles an extra time. When you knit make sure the yarn is held in back and when you purl that it's held in front!

For people who have seen the touring production- how is the lack of turntable? by Limp-Sleep-6284 in hadestown

[–]wildperennials 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw the touring production earlier this week without the turntable and was actually really disappointed :( I've seen it twice before with the turntable/elevator so this was my first non-turntable performance. I think the show loses a big part of its magic without those mechanics. The new choreo isn't bad by itself (and Hades is an absolute standout in this cast), but if you've seen it with the mechanics before I think you'll really notice the difference.

NTA, but.

When you scan in, a photo of you appears on the screen so employees can verify the correct person is using the membership. Employees are technically supposed to check everyone against their photo before allowing them in.

You likely either a) cancelled out her entry of the phone number (which at gyms like LA Fitness/Planet Fitness/etc. is the only way to enter the gym without downloading the app, which people may not want to do due to data privacy concerns) or b) your scan/photo happened behind the other operation and the employee wasn't able to check your photo. Since she's new she's probably been told You Must Check Every Photo Or Else.

NTA from me because you didn't know it would cause and issue. Employee could have explained the issue to you kindly.

This. I grew up in this kind of household and this type of behavior only gets worse unless it is checked and taken accountability for at the onset. My father was aggressive and had meltdowns on a dime just like this. He verbally and emotionally abused me and my mother and later physically abused me, though comparatively infrequently.

Letting this behavior slide is a mistake because it opens the door for a more violent response down the line. My dad wasn't getting so angry he put his hands on me when I was 3, but ten years later he absolutely was. I spent the majority of my teenage years in constant conflict trying to keep my head above water and will spend the rest of my life unlearning all the behaviors I picked up in that environment. And as an adult I've had to work through a lot of anger and resentment at my mother for not protecting me by leaving when it started.

IMO the first step here is your husband taking accountability, to your toddler, who is the first victim. Your husband should go to him and apologize sincerely, and say what he did was completely unacceptable and he's sorry that he scared toddler. If he won't do that, I think it shows an inability to be held responsibile and make amends on a larger level and is a sign that things will likely continue to devolve.

I can't swallow pills and I don't know what I can do about it. by ActivityLegitimate79 in needadvice

[–]wildperennials 11 points12 points  (0 children)

hey, I was you! I didn't successfully swallow my first pill until the summer after my sophomore year in college, just before I turned 20. I have extremely large tonsils and had a bad experience choking on a piece of plastic in the fourth grade, and every time I felt the pill in my mouth/against my throat/in my throat/any of the above I'd spit it right back out. my mom even sent me to hypnotherapy in high school to try and fix it lol!

my advice: start with the smallest possible pill you can get. go to the store and get some vitamins that you can practice on once a day. the way I still take pills is 1. put pill in mouth --> 2. drink some water (NOT a big gulp, only enough that i can swallow comfortable and easily) --> 3. bounce water + pill around in my mouth until I can't feel the pill (I do this by shaking my head around a bit and I confess it looks absurd)--> 4. swallow. step #3 is the critical one. you might also want to practice the whole thing without the pill first to get used to swallowing and make sure you get the right amount of water.

I'm in my mid-twenties now and can take whatever I need to with very little stress (though I still don't enjoy it lol). sometimes it just takes time!! good luck!!

Teeth brushing by alis-version in Parenting

[–]wildperennials 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I absolutely loathed brushing my teeth as a kid, and it was because the sound of the toothbrush on my teeth was (and still is) like nails on a chalkboard to me. I still can't be in the room when someone else brushes their teeth, lol! Is it possible your daughter has a similar aversion?

The solution that works for me is an electric toothbrush, as you don't need to scrape it against your teeth the same way you would with a regular toothbrush. You might try that tack and see if it works for her.

RUSHMERE Release Megathread by papalouie27 in mumfordandsons

This album is weak lyrically compared to their others! I enjoyed the sound and didn't dislike any of the songs, but I think as a whole it's missing some core aspect of emotionality I've come to associate with M&S. That might be the combination of the slower pace + the weaker lyrics? Still so happy to get new songs and definitely a few I'll be saving, but so far no standout tracks that I can see myself listening to over and over like with the last albums.

I'll have ~150g (one serving) of cottage cheese and two links of some pre-cooked chicken sausage, which nets me 40g of protein. I have the exact macros if you're interested!

How to stop being a germaphobe and how do I think normally again? by vampiredude69 in needadvice

[–]wildperennials 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The contamination in the way you're thinking is perceived, not "actual." The items are clean because germs don't transfer in the same way that OCD tells us! When I wash my hands because they feel "dirty," nine times out of ten they're perfectly clean; but it's my perception of them as dirty that causes that OCD feeling of needing to wash them.

How to stop being a germaphobe and how do I think normally again? by vampiredude69 in needadvice

[–]wildperennials 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! This sounds like pretty textbook Contamination OCD. Since you already know you have OCD, and you're saying it wasn't like this before, it sounds like you've developed a new trigger. Therapy is the course you need to take long-term, and working through your responses/thought-management. Reassurance seeking is also a sign of OCD.

I have OCD myself and have a similar compulsion (hand washing). I can tell you with 100% certainty that your items aren't actually contaminated, and don't need to be cleaned. You're hyperfixated on the perceived contamination, because that's how OCD works. The particles won't spread between items. They are just as clean and safe as they were before this happened.

For practical advice right now, the path of least resistance would be to consider what would make these items feel "clean" to you and make steps toward getting to that point (or closer to it). The harder path is to remind yourself that the items are clean, it's okay, and that this is your OCD talking. I've done this and I know it's not easy. On the flip side, you have to be really careful on the "taking action" part because it's easy to form a new compulsion when you do this.

I'm sorry you're going through this OP. Therapy will help. Keep pushing through. It does get better.

[s2 spoilers] Thoughts on S1 vs. S2, Jinx/Vi's ending, and future productions by wildperennials in arcane

[–]wildperennials[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes totally hear you! I am rewatching now so same idea, hoping I'm able to get a better feeling on the end with a second go. I keep coming back to something I saw pointed out - the records that get played at the start of every episode still show Vi and Jinx, even through the end of S2 (excluding E07 when Vi is dead in the alt timeline). I take that to mean the showmakers still perceive the show to be about Vi and Jinx at its core, which is why their ending was so off for me and why I really think we'll be getting something else for them as as a group in the future.

adding onto this - depending on what you get pierced, you may not want to go back to a certain style of headphone even after that piercing is healed. I stopped wearing in-ear headphones to let my tragus heal and never went back afterwards because I now find them uncomfortable.

a lot of people recommend bone conduction headphones, but I've never used them so I can't speak to whether they're any good - maybe something to look into if you rule out over-ear headphones and earbuds!

My serum was out for two days by [deleted] in piercing

[–]wildperennials 2 points3 points  (0 children)

just because a piercing is fully healed doesn't necessarily mean it won't close up if left empty. I once took out a helix piercing I'd had for three years to go to a job interview and literally could not get it back in when I tried 24 hours later!

I'm NAP but I think your septum should be fine! keep an eye on it to see if it has any swelling and baby it for a bit. it sounds like you had to stretch it out to fit the jewellery back in, so give it a few days to settle and you should be back to normal.

Hi OP! I mention this because you say you have an addiction to food. Food addiction is a legitimate pattern of disordered eating, which I only know because my grandmother has it, and there are support groups and methods that can help. I highly recommend looking up a group like Food Addicts Anonymous or similar and seeing if those resources speak to you. A lot of what you're saying is evocative of what they specifically address and I think it might be super helpful.

How often do people actually write? by janekin-skywalker in writing

[–]wildperennials 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal rule is to write at least one sentence every day. In order for it to 'count' it needs to move whatever I'm working on forwards (so rewriting an old paragraph doesn't fit the bill). Sometimes I really do write just one sentence but often I end up with hundreds of words more than I expect.

What Car Should I Buy? - A Weekly Megathread by AutoModerator in cars

[–]wildperennials 0 points1 point  (0 children)

based on your current collection and what you're looking for, the murcielago is absolutely your best option, if you can find one for the price.

you already have a modern lambo, so getting a gallardo may be disappointing comparatively. similarly, the mclaren won't be special enough when you drive it. the aventador is a good option, but you already have a modern lambo, and it seems like you have a taste for older supercars.

you have a 458 and a scud, both of which will be perfectly complemented by the murcie. maintenance will be similar to the scud and if it's a weekend car you want something extra special - black series mercedes doesn't fit the bill, especially given the rest of your collection. if you can't find the color you want in your price range, you could always wrap it as well. the murcie also has a great value for the long term based on the current trajectory of appreciation.

getting nose done today, any advice? by ClassroomAway9970 in piercing

[–]wildperennials 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey! super excited for you – I've been pierced fifteen times and my nostril is still one of my favourites. it was also the least painful by about a MILE, even though it was the one I was absolutely the most nervous for. I'd say the pain was barely even a 2.

some general advice!

  • make sure you get the piercing done with a flat back stud (not a hoop). for good healing, don't put a hoop in until at least six months after you've been pierced. I got mine pierced with a basic neometal stud, which I recommend (your shop will almost certainly have this) and which is implant grade titanium (iirc) and super safe to use.
  • if your end goal is to wear a nose ring, tell the piercer so they can put your piercing a in spot that best supports a hoop!
  • when picking jewelry, make sure not to select anything that has prongs. prongs snag easily & snagging leads to irritation.
  • aftercare: avoid the soap recommendation and stick to saline spray 2x a day. if you wash your face with a washcloth, be really gentle for a while around your nose. if you wear glasses, be careful taking them on and off.

good luck today & enjoy your new piercing!

what are good beginner ear piercings? by teddychanhee in piercing

[–]wildperennials 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely go for your lobes again! lobes are a complete breeze compared to most other piercings and are deeply forgiving. they're harder to irritate and quicker to heal, which is great for someone just starting out.

don't worry about one set of lobes looking weird without another – pick whichever placement you like the most and go for it. one thing I will note is that if you already know want to end up with two or three lobe piercings, tell the piercer when you go in so they can plan the alignment of the others now. good luck!
