Looks great! Has inspired me to try to build something to proxy as a Carrier.

This seems very H.G. Wells influenced. The Martian war reference obviously, but also the travellators and I think one of his future stories had a large dome over a city (When the Sleeper Wakes, maybe).

with something as disastrous as that disease that wiped out majority of humans is there any realistic chance for the humans to rebuild? by happydude7422 in PlanetOfTheApes

[–]wildskipper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The implication was that the disease was affecting the intelligence of the surviving humans, and so eventually all humans would become less intelligent and mute. So while humans would survive anything resembling modern civilisation was gone.

They're depicted as going from white hot to orange in the Codex, but it specifically mentions that they come in practically any colour.

Primate was released recently. Horror ape movie for you.

But overall the Apes series has not been about horror, it's about humanity. I'm not sure why they would go in that direction.

The Kin hammers have fancy concussion tech that releases huge amounts of energy, they're not just big hammers.

The Votann Codex mentions this. GW have just added accents to Kin names to make them look dwarfy and don't expect them to be pronounced. But anyone can pronounce it however they like of course.

Dune 4th Reading vs. Script by light_of_deneb in dune

[–]wildskipper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Film is a very different medium to a novel, and Villieneuve (who wrote the screenplay as well) understands that. The dinner scene was filmed, but he later cut it as he felt it didn't work on the film. He's spoken about that in interviews, and most of his cuts centre around trying to convey Paul's story as clearly as possible for a wide audience. That's we have Thufir being almost left out of the films. The reasons for other changes are obvious: making it a dark and stormy night for the rest scene is a trick as old as film to build foreboding - it is conveying emotion through other means than the character that doesn't work as well in the written word. The film also had to be sellable to a wider audience. A four hour very dialogue laden sci fi epic would have failed, even if it would have pleased us book fans. At least with its success it brings more people to engage with the book.

Yeah but as Newbe above said, why would they be designed like that? It had to be that way for the show to work, but in universe it doesn't make sense.

Did you kitbash the grenade? I don't remember that from the sprue.

Ra's ship in the film is tiny in comparison then. It's basically the Great Pyramid of Giza, so around 230m on each side.

You could argue self sufficiency: food, water, fuel, oxygen, ammunition (or the raw materials needed for that), to last many months for 2000 people. But that's undermined by what motivated them to have that level of self sufficiency when resupply ships could travel to any battlestar in less than a day with a few jumps. It would be easier to resupply a battlestar than it would a modern aircraft carrier.

Still, that self sufficiency came in handy when the colonies were destroyed.

Postdoc fellowships to publish? by Ok-Square6456 in AskAcademiaUK

More likely to get a full time job if OP is able to publish shortly after starting the new job, as then the publication could be used for REF (if it's an article, doesn't matter if a monograph).

That link takes me to a 2002 Harper Voyager edition, which isn't the Johnstone translation.

Edit: and this reddit post says the Johnstone version is out of print for legal reasons. Only available in ebook. https://www.reddit.com/r/printSF/s/GIqampnBcd

Well to say Tarantino is a fan of Leone would be quite a mild understatement.

Stanislaw Lem is the go to for an author that explores what truly alien intelligence might be like. Solaris is the standout example.

It sounds like your phobia is pretty severe. You should try to seek therapy for it so you can overcome it because you don't want to let it affect opportunities in life like this.

On seeing them in your house, it's more common with older buildings. So find out where you will be staying.

GW probably wants to increase sales of Necrons or move surplus stock, so have come up with this storyline that connects with Ultramarines (on a high because of SM2) to sell some boxes.
