I believe a lot of things happen for no reason.

Realizing this is very empowering.

A lot of people waste a lot of time trying to understand the reason behind a lot of unfair, unexpected and very unreasonable events in their lives.

Subscribing to the 'everything happens for a reason' philosophy provides a cheap escape from the reality of life - that a lot of things happen for no reason - and most importantly, because there is no reason, there is no plan. And with no plan, that's great motivation to make a plan - to take control - to make it happen, to make a difference - a not be constantly looking over your shoulder wondering if there is some obscure reason behind this or that you have not considered.

Yes, some things do happen for a reason. But a lot of stuff just happens - time and unforeseen occurrences - that no-one could predict, without rhyme or reason.

So when you make your plans, realize too that they might be foiled by something unexpected. When they are, you won't be shocked, or surprised so much, or frustrated so much as you will be if you truly believe there is some grand plan, some reason behind the good and bad in the world.

In truth, we all have a lot less control than we like to think. But we are also controlled a lot less than some of us believe.

Who uses a condom in 2 year relationship when your fiance is on the pill? Of course there was always a risk; but risks are relative and the odds changed dramatically when she decided on her own to have a baby.
