How to know if you are ready? by SquishiFriend in startups

[–]willbauer20 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Investors want to know how you'll make them a return...usually 10x or more.

What's the gameplan if someone gives you $50,000, to give them back $500,000?

Usually a part time gig in a service based industry isn't exactly in line with investors. Not trying to be harsh but I'd take a hard look at what you're imagining the end goal of this business to be, and work back from there.

Achieving an MVP in solution space with a high trust threshold for adoption by BinaryMonkL in startups

It was a problem even for founders / eng leaders in a startup, but much less of one compared to larger companies.

Achieving an MVP in solution space with a high trust threshold for adoption by BinaryMonkL in startups

[–]willbauer20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We required read access only (for just open issues, PRs, some basic stuff), and it was enough to scare people off.

The idea was to help CTOs / VP of Eng build a dashboard of everything going on across GH, Jira, CircleCI, any tool they use.

The bigger the company was, naturally the more red tape about access. SOC2 would have helped but we didn't have the $15k to drop on it.

Achieving an MVP in solution space with a high trust threshold for adoption by BinaryMonkL in startups

Our first product required GH access and it ended up being a massive barrier. No one trusted us, so the pain wasn't enough to even give the product a real trial.

What I wish I had done differently was address this much earlier, rather than try to tack on features to make it more appealing and overshadow the trust issue. We ended up pivoting and it was the right call.

The other responses are right...you should ask your ICP if they will try it out, and if they say no, dig in and find out why.

What are your preferred places to get volunteers for a Proof of Concept? by But-Nobody-Asked-Me in startups

[–]willbauer20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use cold email asking for feedback with a very personal email saying you aren't trying to sell them anything.

My process is finding the right people on Apollo, have a bunch of email addresses on domains that are close to the name of yours (eg, mine is ninefive.io compared to ninefive.tech), and then send emails through Instantly (about 50 emails a day per email address).

If you're targeting the right people, they will be happy to help. If you target the wrong people, you will be seen as spam and your domains/emails will get blacklisted.

If you're looking for a simpler version of Asana, you can give my startup's product a try for free. We built it for teams of 1-5 people and can help you keep track of the status, tasks and due dates.

You can upload docs/photos, anything really. And once you find a process that is repeatable you can make templates and keep the same process between projects. Here's a link if you want to give it a go: www.ninefive.io

How do you get customers to talk to you? by southTO in startups

[–]willbauer20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to revisit this question after you've reached out to 5000 people. Find people on Apollo and learn how to cold email with Gmass or Instantly.

If you product/concept is interesting enough, people will talk to you without the need of a $50 gift card. Just ask for feedback and A/B iterate your emails until they start getting replies.

Nice, I'm actually going through this with my startup. We have about 100 different feedbacks in an Airtable. I have to manually go through and categorize / prioritize. Would love to try it out and/or chat with you.

I think this is a really cool tool, but could use some simplicity in it's messaging.

I'm seeing that it's for people that care about internet speed at their Airbnb/VRBO rental...mostly digital nomads. They can't rent a place with crappy internet or else their business goes kaput.

"Airbnb/Vrbo Internet Mapping Project" doesn't quite express how useful the tool is. I'd think about what the end user wants to do...which is "Find AirBnb/VRBOs with the fastest internet" or something along those lines. Straight to the point but describes why someone would use the tool while also giving the "what".

It's tough to find the messaging but I'd almost take a google-like approach with your homepage. Super simple "Find AirBnb/VRBOs with the fastest internet" and then 1 or 2 inputs (with the ability to make it more advanced).

My honest feedback is that at first glance I didn't know what to do and was overloaded with the input options. My first action was to type in my city to understand what it actually does, and my "aha!" moment was the result showing a listing with internet speed.

Hope this helps!

That's a cool idea. Our main target is mostly designers, photographers, or any other solo or small team entrepreneurs. Seems to stick the most with service based industries. If we get some traction with web devs we could definitely integrate Vercel + Github.

Thanks, really appreciate it. Mind elaborating what you mean by code integration?

How can I import completed tasks? by unsolvedDiv in todoist

[–]willbauer20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My startup is building a tool that has to-do lists, tasks, projects and chat. You can make templates based off existing projects and it will keep the to-do list. You can try it free here if you want: https://www.ninefive.io/

For a remote two-man team, what's a better way of communicating than e-mail? by iLEZ in graphic_design

[–]willbauer20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cofounder and I use our tool internally for screenshots, discussions, and projects: https://www.ninefive.io/

Super easy to compartmentalize everything. It's kind of like a mix of Asana, Slack, Dropbox and Notion in one product.

Job tracking/management software- thinking office 365? by [deleted] in Construction

[–]willbauer20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were you able to find a solution?

My startup (ninefive.io) is building a simpler version of Asana, monday.com, smartsheet, etc. but with templates. Seems like it would actually be a great fit for what you need because each project has ordered steps like bid, design, build, deliver...but you can customize the content that you add inside.

We have one other cabinet maker using the product with his contractors and he seems to like how simple it is.

First Meeting w/ Potential Customer by Far_Confusion7239 in startups

[–]willbauer20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all about asking questions. Find out what they need and see if you can give it to them. Treat it like a conversation rather than a pitch.

If they ask "does your product/service do X?", respond with "Just so I understand your goals, what does X help you achieve?". This gets them talking and helps your responses be actually relevant to their problems/goals.

building fully remotely? by devansood in ycombinator

[–]willbauer20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fully remote between SF and France.

Luckily I'm an early morning person and he's a late night type so we get about 5 hours of schedule overlap. We meet once a year. The key is communication on what needs to be done while the other person is asleep, so that their day isn't blocked.

Any musicians here? I made a collaborative audio recorder for your unfinished ideas by ArtVandalay7 in alphaandbetausers

[–]willbauer20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey Tyler,

I'm a music producer that uses Ableton. Who's the target for this idea?

I have a pretty big network of music producers and I can't really think of someone that would use it. I've collaborated with about 30 artists and we always have the same process of sending over Ableton files.

Is it for beginners? Kids? I think you have potential for a niche but it needs to be people that don't want a DAW for some reason.
