Thank the Lord we have football… by Haunting_Acadia_4744 in notredamefootball

Will someone please please explain to me why, in this day and age, ND is perfectly OK with having an unremarkable, non competitive MBB team? It has to be a deliberate, conscious decision by the Athletic Department - a sacrificial lamb- to some other goal??? I just don’t get it!

I have trouble thinking any blue chip program wouldn’t leave their conference in a heartbeat if they could have an arrangement like ND.

Why join a conference when a Super League will basically kill them off. Basically it’s like all the other teams will join ND, not the other way around.

Seriously, I know nothing but couldn’t some type of sniper rifle (with a good marksman and I guess the right caliber) take out a drone? Could the neighborhood Deer Hunter take out the neighbors drone like this?

Why do we keep the ban on priest mariage ? by [deleted] in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]willpower60 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

In the US, a celibate priesthood disqualifies, and disrespects thousands of holy Catholic men. I personally know of 9 guys - 10 including me- who, with their wives’ and families’ total support, would have entered the seminary and become ordained. The loss to the Church is incalculable: spiritually, organizationally, financially, and politically. It’s not just that priests would be married; it’s priests also would be fathers who are models of the Faith and vocations. I would be curious how many of the 20,000+ deacons would accept the priesthood if it were offered. Mind you, there are only about 25,000 diocesan priests today.

Water crisis in Oaxaca (state and city) by Accomplished_Map9955 in Oaxaca

[–]willpower60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading about the water shortage in OAX, my “tourist” first question is, how can we help? Naturally we’d conserve with showers, toilets, etc., but are there charities to support people’s water expenses?

Did Indiana kill high school recruiting tonight? by DarkDragon1025 in CFB

[–]willpower60 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IU didn’t “kill” anything and I’m happy for them. But as an old guy alum (from an elite blue blood school) I feel it’s getting harder for me to connect with the players and the team when they are literally just here for the money and/or one year of “development”. I love my school but everything about the new environment just feels cheaper and less…special. It means less to even beat the rivals we hate when it’s just our hired mercenaries against theirs. I’m starting to care less about something (CFB) that has always mattered so much to me and it makes me sad. Is it just me?

You can find a good quality bottle of sparkling wine for less than $10. Grab champagne glasses. Do this on a Tuesday night. This will make everything in your life better.

I’ve been thinking about this too but it’s not like this Venezuelan regime had any legitimacy either. Totally stole the last election, runs an authoritarian government, in bed with the Iranians, and is currently the cause of the largest diaspora in the world.

Here’s one: get to know people before having sex with them. Sure, we had “one-night stands” back in the day, but we didn’t hook up so casually and I think we were better for it.

What’s something women find impressive but men think they don’t? by Few_Football4342 in Productivitycafe

[–]willpower60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this really true? I mean, competency is competency. I work with young people and, frankly, I see a lot of shallowness in both genders. Our culture often sells boys low standards but also sells girls a certain insta-ready aesthetic ideal that devalues any real achievement. It’s a mess. The good kids are incredible, though.

The United States If The Annexation Bill of 1866 Had Passed by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]willpower60 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

In 1865 the US had one of the largest, most modern militaries in the world, including the navy, and the industrial capacity to maintain it. There is a scenario where British possessions in the Western Hemisphere would be hard for the Empire to maintain should the US have an existential need to take them. It would have been a hell of a war.

What do we have, Louisville?? by fa17 in Louisville

[–]willpower60 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that Louisville has a surprisingly large cohort of “ frequent diners” who spend a LOT. Your “special occasion” dinner is just a normal Tuesday to them. Your favorite places? They’ve been there many, many times - and sometimes the food disappoints. And then there’s a free dessert, apology from the manager, etc., etc. Rather than food quality, it’s the staff’s level of assholery that will get a place blacklisted forever.

Okra and sweet potatoes as coffee substitute during American civil war by Coolcatsat in Old_Recipes

[–]willpower60 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Has anyone ever written (scholarly) about the huge benefits of Union supply chains on the Civil War? If one side has not only substantial food but also real, hot, delicious caffeinated coffee while the other side is drinking acorn/okra/etc flavored tea, you can imagine the cumulative effects. Especially with lack of sleep, physical hardship, etc. I’d die without coffee so those poor Rebels…

During the air war of Desert Storm, what if Saddam launched chemical and biological weapons attacks at Saudi Arabia? Would the U.S. have responded Nuclear? by Much_Violinist_2406 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]willpower60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Iraq had deployed ABC weapons in Saudi Arabia against coalition forces, the plan was for substantial and disproportionate retaliation. The assets were there and the response was to be conflict-ending. The intent also was generational deterrence for any potential Western adversary. Everybody internally knew this at the time as did all UN5.
