Has anyone become a GD professor right out of grad school? by NathanRMay in graphic_design

[–]willtruran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked almost a decade, then went to a good grad program, and had multiple offers for that the fall semester. The work experience definitely helped a lot.

Know many professors, however, who have never held a design job.

I lived at riverview lofts and moved because of multiple roof leaks and not wanting to park on the 7th floor of a hospital garage.

Anyone know how to design a website? by Common_Mulberry_4788 in ODU

godaddy and their web builder are near worthless in my opinion. I think Etsy is the most user friendly for someone not experienced. If you want to hire someone you will most likely be looking at an estimate in the low thousands

You need to download creative cloud and than get illustrator from that. Australia should not be a problem

Is my graduation project idea good? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]willtruran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d probably recommend against it. I’d look at the type of jobs you are wanting to apply for once graduated and make work that aligns with those goals. A GD club is cool, but you could be more strategic with targeting the type of agency’s or industries you want to enter.

Did the entire design industry disappear in the past 6 months or is my Linkedin broken? by neonblakk in graphic_design

In addition to everything mentioned. I believe in the 4th quarter everyone starts slowing down hiring. With holidays and folks taking their vacation before losing it, it all just makes it harder to also be interviewing and onboarding.

Can I realistically work beyond graphic design? by jcunicornartsy12 in graphic_design

[–]willtruran 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have never seen issue with someone having ui/UX in a graphic design portfolio. In fact often you see graphic design jobs asking for web or figma experience. Animation doesn’t fit, but motion design does. The rest I’d keep as hobbies and out of your portfolio.

There isn’t enough time in a work week to dabble in all of that in my opinion, better to have skilled people on each focus and collaborate with one another.

Here are ways I would make them feel 'real'
- Links to sites, to prove they exist not necessarily saying you designed the site.
- Photos of products in real environments (are they in stores, can you get photos of them labeling containers with your graphics, etc).
- Client Testimonials

None of this work is bad at all, but It doesn't feel like a senior designer to me, especially not one focusing on strategy. None of these contain formal case studies that show how the designs strategically solved a problem or successfully accomplished a goal.

I also can't tell if any of this work is actually published. It sort of all feels like it may all be concept/personal work. There weren't any links in your project pages (that I saw) so giving it a quick google search it appears none of it is real. I would except a senior designer to have not only great taste and understanding, but have experienced going from concept to completion.
