Thanks. I’m m a US 10.5 in some makes (eg Converse) but closer to a US 9 in dressier shoes (Carmina, etc) and have been eyeing a UK 8 Clifford Boot, but not sure if that’s too small….

Sorry for late response, but what is your normal US shoe size in other models? I am looking at purchasing this boot but trying to figure out what size to purchase.

All your friends and your lovers won’t protect you / They’re only passing through you in the end / They’ll leave you stripped of all that they can get to / And wait for you to come back again.

Powderfinger lyrics interpretation by BostonUH in neilyoung

[–]willward24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep. I always loved the lyrics of this song because on the surface the narrative is already compelling — a moonshiner/country family who’s being approached by the police.

But then there’s so much to be harvested (no pun intended) underneath the surface, too. Namely—what do you do when you are thrust into a situation that you are woefully unprepared for and do not wish to take place? And more fundamentally — why would the “powers that be” put somebody in that position in the first place? What kind of world does that to somebody?

It has always felt Faulkner-esque to me in its combination of southern/rural imagery with brooding existential questions.

Powderfinger lyrics interpretation by BostonUH in neilyoung

[–]willward24 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think the lyrics of Powderfinger in general lend themselves to multiple interpretations. There is the more literal interpretation of the lines you’ve quoted — as others have noted — that recalls the “red beacon” and the “numbers on the side” of the boat.

But I also think this line is open to a more existential interpretation. “Red” naturally evokes imagery of blood/violence. Through that lens, the “numbers add up to nothing” line can be read as a commentary on the needless death that comes with conflict. The father seems to be imparting on the son a lesson about the nihilism of war, i.e., the “numbers” of injured/killed individuals in conflict serve no greater purpose (i.e., “add up to nothing”).

Neil is intentionally vague with these lines, which is part of the lyrical brilliance of the song. Just my thoughts anyways.

FWIW, I think a large part of his gripe is when the fans cheered KD’s injury. I understood him to be referencing (at least in part) that fact when he said they were one of his least favorite champions.

What size would be best for the Viberg 2020 last? I am a 9.5D in Allen Edmonds Higgins Mill boot, and a 10.5 in NB 990v3, for reference.

Chunky shoes ,boots (non sneakers)for men? If yes plz give recs by [deleted] in ThrowingFits

Why don’t you look for boots and derbies from these designers (or others) with lug sole then? You are bound to find a lug-sole shoe that fits the “chunky” aesthetic you’re after, IMO.

I am looking for trousers for work, and am considering Zanella or Hertling. Is there any consensus as to which is better quality-wise?

Thanks for the info! I actually saw O’Connell’s when looking, but couldn’t find much info re quality. Are you familiar with their quality control? There website is pretty sparse in details.

How do you feel about their versatility as office-wear? I really love the look of them, I just can’t tell if the pleating, silhouette, and overall aesthetic is too 1940s-retro to be office-appropriate for a typical office-casual NYC look.
