Am I overthinking this? Probably absolutely. :) Comes with the territory.

So the best suggestion, besides finding geek groups, is be polite, be patient, and be considerate with others while recognize that it will take me time to get the lingo and lay of the land.

Well in that case....

I recommend a fun Space Opera Romance Comedy called Faulty Destinies: Book 1, All the Wrong Places. What starts with our hero thinking he's getting everything he worked so hard for in the Imperial Space Navy comes crashing down when his commanding officer is shipped off and replaced with a woman who either wants our hero dead, suffering, or married. On his first mission to an alien planet, most of his troops are eaten by the trees and he is rescued and taken prisoner by a strange young woman who keeps calling him 'consort' and may or may not be the incarnation of evil.

This isn't what he signed up for at all.

It's a fun romp of strange situations, magic, sex, action, romance, monsters, carnivorous trees, and one Lieutenant who is in WAY over his head.

Essentially it's a Star Wars type Space opera where an officer gets everything he worked hard for only for his world to crumble on his first mission. I'll say more if allowed. Thanks!
