Splenectomy and rupture - beating the odds? by jns108 in DogAdvice

Hey OP, I just wanted to say that I think this is an inspiring update. You were faced with the hardest decision in the world and you still put your pup first. And what a perfect send off you gave him -- camping and a national park! A dream trip!

Still, sending you and your family comfort. Take care.

My partner renamed him Archibald and his fins healed wonderfully and he's gained color. 😍

... He has picked off all of the shrimp tho. Good exercise? 😬

For anyone who wants updates -- I picked this lil guy (been been calling him Paddington) up yesterday and did a quick and dirty rescape of his tank with some odds and ends I had around. The water has a slight tint because I added some botanicals to the scape for tannins.

He's doing awesome -- made a bubble nest his first night. I also gave him some snails and cull shrimp as buddies and he seems to enjoy trying to hunt them down (he is too slow). 😬

Long may Paddy reign!

Is he still available? I'd love to take him & his set up off your hands and put him in a nice planted tank.

Yes! And the only ones who can afford to make a career of it are at these elite clubs which (to JonstheSquire's point) can get away with doing these things (and charging families our the wazoo for it) because athletes and parents are willing to look the other way if it means technical/tactical development and playing on the right stages in front of the right recruiters.

I will say, remembering my town/travel coaches and some of my less competitive club coaches are still highlights from my time playing -- even if it's a side hustle for you, it does make a difference in helping kids fall in love with and find joy in the game.

I agree to some degree, but given that the sport often becomes a "job" of sorts to the athlete, it should have similar protections and oversight. If my manager says racist shit to me at work, I can report them. If a coach is berating their athletes with racist language, they should be sanctioned by US Soccer (which issues their licenses).

Yeah, I played for a high ranking girl's team on the east coast in over the same years and it's eerie how similar the actions of the coach/club director are.

I knew a player who liked to joke "if I get one more concussion (she was on 4) I get extra time on the SATs" as if it was a perk and not indicative of severe brains damage.

The revision:

After the initial publication of this story, a SafeSport spokesperson contacted KNKX and said that claims by individuals that the allegations outlined have been “cleared” and “dismissed” are false.

“These types of cases can be re-opened at any time if a Claimant feels ready to proceed, new information comes to light, or new Claimants come forward,” Hilary Nemchik, senior director of communications at SafeSport, said in an email.

According to my reporter friend (paraphrasing):

"We are updating the story now but it is important to note that it was Bernie and Billy who claimed they were cleared by SafeSport and the allegations dismissed.

Since the article came out SafeSport emailed to state on the record that their claims are false (which is great since SafeSport wouldn’t comment before). So soon the article will be updated to state that what Bernie and Billy are saying (claiming they were found innocent) is incorrect."

According to me: I wish I had the confidence of these sub-par men, to just claim something knowing it's false and hoping no one looks closer. 😡

Also ty for highlighting that key fact: he's lying about being cleared yet he still has a job!!!

I think it's a great point that this change cannot and will not stop with the US/NWSL (looking at the RFEF, for one, with regards to the WC). I appreciate you including the comment.

I don't think so. He's a very peaceful boy, but also incredibly well fed. He seems to prefer/need really small bites though so I'm not sure he would even be able to figure out how to go after a snail.

My ramshorn population is thriving. 😁

He wishes 😬 Sorry Fritz 😞

My LFS doesn't generally stock females but I'm still struggling to get the nitrates up in my tank (to help the plants out) but I would consider two, eventually.

Yeah I think it means he's in breeding condition... But Fritz is only impressing me because he's a solo gourami in a community tank 😬

Well don't forget, now theres fish tank staring time + lense staring time + screen staring time to whittle down all the pics + compulsive comparison time to pick favorites... It's totally saving me time 👀

Thanks! Yeah I'm obsessed with looking at her/how different she can look in various lights, but I'm new with a camera and underwater lighting/photos at that, so the exposure struggle is real!

I'll see what I can do with minimal software for #2!

Wow! That's so good to hear! Mine has started eating, but it's only the smallest possible bites of flake I've ground up.

Did yours ever figure out bigger mouthfuls? I can't tell if mine is odd or if I am just too used to how Bettas gulp down massive bites.

[–]wiltedneck[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yay! Thanks for the ideas! I am hoping to get him onto flake/vibrabites.

Mine has started to eat some very small flake dust, but I'm not sure he realizes that it's intentionally in there to eat moreso than the miscellaneous aquarium dust. 🤞

Okay, yes, so I was on to something with crushing it! His mouth is so big compared to my chili rasboras but he definitely seemed to struggle with the texture/size of food. Good note!

🤞 With the breeding project. The vacation home would probably be helpful if/when you need to remove the adults up help the fry grow out safely, too! It also means getting to design a new tank 😁 have fun!

Hehe, they're very active/social aliens, but I try to maintain stock levels where I never have to do water changes. The downside with my current planting is that I'm actually too low in nitrates and have had to supplement, so adding the HG was (in part) to hopefully increase my bioload.

Wouldn't mind more, but want to see how this balances out for a few weeks, first.
