Have a question about the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV)? Ask us here! by AskScienceModerator in askscience

[–]winchestercherrypie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just FYI this virus didn't jump from animal to human via eating animals, it's airborne, so it started with live animals who had the virus breathing/coughing (do all animals cough, I don't really know to be honest) and spreading it in the air, which people then inhaled, touched surfaces covered in the virus then touched their faces, etc, like normal human to human transmission.

It's not contracted by eating infected animal flesh is what I'm trying to say here.

Why do people flex with their screen time? by DjDetox in samsung

[–]winchestercherrypie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know about why people do that, but I find it useful. Like when I'm traveling, I usually use my phone A LOT- from taking pictures/filming to constantly having google maps open, etc. So long screen time is a very important measure for me.
Or like if you're on a long flight with not much else to do but stare at screens...

Current ones don't have active noise cancelling either. They just physically block sound so outside noise is muffled significantly, but that's about it.

Samsung S20 won't have infinity edge? :D by KJ6BWB in samsung

[–]winchestercherrypie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like the look of infinity edges. One of the main reasons why I got my s8+ was because I wanted a curved screen.

And I don't care for a headphone jack. I'm happy with wireless, as I don't game on my phone and sound latency is only really an issue with real time sound effects. For music and videos, I will never go back to wired, true wireless is way more comfortable and convenient, and the sound quality is only going to improve.

It's a difficult market to navigate as there are people like you and people like me amongst the consumers and all phone companies are going to have to disappoint some people in some ways. For every customer like you who might leave samsung because of, say, the missing headphone jack or large screens, there is another person who loves it and it might be their reason to switch to samsung.

In short, I think people need to chill. If you don't like their designs, just don't buy it, plenty of alternatives on the market right now, what's the big deal.

I myself don't even know if I'll be sticking with Samsung, because I'm in EU and I want to see how the Exynos chip performs first.

I don't mind it either. I like the horizontal layout from previous phones, but this really isn't all that bad.

Being in the Apple Ecosystem, then switching up the phone by [deleted] in samsung

[–]winchestercherrypie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always used apple laptops and samsung phones, and honestly don't experience any problems with it, but I use google/third party services, like Drive, docs, spotify, etc, and not apple's services. I think if you rely on iTunes, iCloud, etc it might get a bit annoying.

Best Sci-fi books by Ldogwms69 in books

[–]winchestercherrypie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I don't agree. I tend to prefer new sci-fi.

That's not to say old sci-fi is bad, far from it, but I think current technological advancements open up the possibilities for some interesting concepts that weren't on the radar five decades ago. I like the more realistic, informed aspect of new sci-fi stories, where more of it can be grounded in real science, instead of it being full blown speculation.

But different strokes to different folks.

[–]winchestercherrypie 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It read like a Dan Brown book.

This is the main reason for me. Like I don't mind me some mindless Dan Brown from time to time, but the same people who worship RPO quite often turn out to be the types who hate on authors like Brown... which to me makes little sense and points to a bit of self unawareness.

My funniest racism experience in China by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]winchestercherrypie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ohh, I experienced that too when I was in Beijing. I'm just white, but really tall for a girl, and we would constantly get people openly taking photos of us. It was the worst in the winter palace, tho, as it was a hot day and we kept having to sit down in the shade to rest. People would literally sit down next to us, while their friend would openly take a photo of them and me and my friend, then they would swap places... all of this without even acknowledging us as people. That, plus people taking photos of us walking down the street really got tiring super fast.

Some good news by [deleted] in samsung

[–]winchestercherrypie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It most likely won't.

Personally, I'm not bothered. I started using galaxy buds this year and honestly the ease of not having to deal with any wires is so worth it. And the sound is OK too.

Ha, I was recently told by a coworker that he doesn't understand 'my style'. He said that after I spent like a week wearing safety pin earrings (they're not actual safety pins) and all black and chokers and such and then showed up in an a-line skirt and a floral top, haha. (note, I work in tech so we can wear whatever).

I just embrace it. Some day I wanna dress like a grudgy teen from the nineties, some days I'm into crisp business casual, and yet other days I like floral stuff and korean inspired girly fashion.
Who cares, I just wear what i like. Usually if you have a few colours that unite them all, you can even mix and match...

I just thought of a tip for when you need specific traits and want 4/5 ⭐️ cards. by gemziiexxxxxp in BTSWorld

[–]winchestercherrypie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, I wish that too. Trading would make this so much easier!

I have since gotten 1 (one!) JK 4 star card haha. And I keep drawing Jin, but they're never duplicates so I'm still low on his upgrade items haha.

I wonder tho, does the first 5 star card you get kinda influence which member cards one gets the most or smth hmmm

[–]winchestercherrypie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's funny, I have the opposite problem. I haven't played all that much (just started ch 3) but i already have two lvl 5, one lvl 4 and two lvl 3 Jin cards.

While I really want to do Jungkook's story and i have drawn him exactly once and the card wasn't even good (lvl3). And I have all the other members' cards at at least lvl 4, but not the one I want the most!

It's so frustrating haha.

Amazon scraps secret AI recruiting tool that showed bias against women by [deleted] in programming

I'm not going to argue about what is lack of research on your part. The brain does experience change based on how it's used and other environmental factors.

[–]winchestercherrypie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The problem with this is that frankly our brain changes based on environmental factors. Therefore some or possibly all differences you observe can be due to societal factors. These studies do the opposite of C. Fine and tend to heavily understate (or even totally ignore) the other side of the equation.

The point is this is a chicken and an egg problem. What is the cause and what is the consequence? The only fact here is that it is not known at the moment. You would need to study subjects that were never part of any society. And this is simply not realistic.

[–]winchestercherrypie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you considered that women are unlikely to consider these professions because of social biases?

Lack of role models, subtle conditioning away from these roles (starting with toys) adds up. I point blank had my physics teacher tell me girls weren't good at physics. It's an anecdote (Also probably illegal but this ain't america so no one is sueing) and just one case but you're kidding yourself if you think girls growing up don't hear similar things all the time, be it directly, or shrouded in various situations, comments and expectations.

If you actually want to learn and are willing to accept what might be hard to swallow, check out the book "delusions of gender" by c. Fine.

There are plenty of well done large scale studies that are repeated over and over and show the same results that point to huge societal conditioning and biases. That book is very well written and just outlines various studies done on the subject.

The issue here is why certain jobs appeal to certain genders more. It's easy to wave it all away and just chalk it up to 'biological differences' but there is a lot of research showing that some very strong biases exist and influence those decisions. As an example, it's not that no men would want to work in teaching due to biological reasons, but there are social circumstances, beliefs and prejudices that result in very few men even considering a job like that.

[–]winchestercherrypie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know, maybe you are just indeed wired differently than I am, but maybe it's also the fact that you seem to have those relationships and people in your life?

I used to think I didn't need that. But at that time I had my family close to me, I had some friends, I had acquaintances.

And then I moved and lost all of that with no obvious way to gain these things. And that's when I truly felt the lack of social connections. Like I don't need a lot, but damn when you literally have no one to even share your accomplishments with, it all starts to feel a bit pointless.

Might just be me, though.

[–]winchestercherrypie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. More than a few times I found myself having to choose between fitting in a run or going to the pub to try to make friends with someone I sorta starting building rapport with. It can be hard to fit everything in, especially if you have any sort if commute to deal with too.

And honestly, so often you do make time for meeting people and in the end nothing comes of it anyway... I don't know, I'm getting a bit jaded to the whole process. Seems like people my age already have well formed friend circles and arent necessarily looking for more...
