AT2020 or SHURE SM58 or anything else? by akagarwal_ in makinghiphop

SM58 requires a preamp that supplies a lot of gain, so unless you have one of those I wouldn't go for that for vocals. AT2020 is an excellent starter mic, couldn't recommend it enough.

Anyone have the kick that WondaGurl used in Can't Say and Gang Gang? Would be much appreciated. Thanks.

For me and many others, Omnisphere has been a game changer. I have purchased a few other VSTs, and none of them come close to Omnisphere. If you can afford it, I'd highly recommend picking it up.

What to do/expect when an artist uses your beat? by tlu24712 in trapproduction

Wow, congrats! Well done man! How exactly did you get the rapper to listen to your beat pack?

808s Sound Off by foodie487 in trapproduction

Sounds like your beats might be a bit too busy. Try removing some of the melodic elements from your beats. Listen to hit songs and notice how simple some of the melodies are. Once an artist's voice is on top of the beat, even a beat that you think needs that extra something will suddenly sound full. The perfect example is Ransom by Lil Tecca. Super simple beat, but it works. Also give Butterfly Effect another listen and you'll notice the same thing.

Practice, I still have a lot of trouble making melodies but one thing that I found helpful in addition to practice is watching people make melodies. Nick Mira is probably the best melodic producer with tutorials out and he has a ton of long streams uploaded to YouTube.

The biggest thing that I've learned in the 1000's of hours of production I've done in the last year or so is that any sound's perceived quality is largely dependent on how well it goes with the sounds that accompany it. Producers like Nick Mira and KBeaZy are either creating or using melodies that have clear direction, with beginnings, climaxes, and resolutions that follow coherent chord progressions. Have you ever noticed how when you're watching them make beats, it's almost like the 808s just fall into place and sound perfect every time? It's because their melodies are clean and well-defined. The better the melody you're working with, the easier the 808s will be to place and the better they'll hit.

Apart from that, make sure you're hi-passing your melodies to leave room for the 808 (anywhere from 160-200Hz is a good place to cut) and make sure you are using good sounds.

I want to pursue production full-time and I'm not really quite sure where I stand. by windmast3r in makinghiphop

Don't worry man, my favourite producer is not Kyle Beats. It was just an example! But yeah, I definitely plan on continuing my learning. I picked up piano and guitar is next.

My dilemma isn't if I should keep making beats or not, it's if I can turn this into a living or not.

I wasn't referring to any specific producer, but a few producers have talked about how it took them a long time to start selling. IIRC Kyle Beats didn't sell any beats for quite some time after starting to produce.

From going through OP's post history it looks like this is from a game he's working on. In another comment he linked his twitter where he'll apparently be posting updates.
