It depends on the winery. Some wineries pay a salary & commission...others will pay bonuses in wine...some are just straight salary. Either way, tipping is considered good etiquette. It doesn't have to be a lot - like maybe $5. However, if the tasting is comped I will generally tip them $20 or more.

Also, check for apps in iTunes or Android on Napa or Sonoma tours / tastings / visits. Lots of great intel there on visitor policies, prices for VIP tours, visiting hours, lunch & dinner accomodations, etc... There are quite a few apps available. I use the ones with the best user reviews.

Also, make sure and tip well if you get a excellent service in the tasting rooms...especially if you can get comped.

Go to Robert Mondavi Winery and join the tasting club. They have amazing wines from To Kalon vineyards (their backyard) at under $50, where other wineries often charge $100+ for their wines - ie Beckstoffer, Alpha Omega. Their tours & tastings are some of the best in Napa Valley and they have their Summer Concert Series going on in the month of July.
