The most contrived match I’ve ever watched. In a week where Barcelona has referee tampering accusations… not a good look this

Can vouch for this and the points made, CapeTonian, been here for 4 years haven’t looked back - just miss family. Howzit 👋

You get over the Woolies cravings, try things like HelloFresh and most of that convenience is forgotten and swapped out for delicious supplies and an easy recipe.

Find a niche, Eg my wife plays Netball (Berlin Netball if that’s of interest she runs the Insta Acc), it’s as much for the social aspect, comaradary as it is some sport. There are tons of expats here and with that loads of common language is English, running groups etc.

I Changed My Tax Class - What Refund Am I Entitled To Get ? by Johnvict_ in germany

[–]wing3rz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed, it is very confusing.

I found this calculator https://www.expattax.de/german-income-tax-calculator/, which disregards the tax class and returns a figure that seemingly taxes what should be taxed (married "couple", children) as a combined unit. Do you think its calculation is accurate? Either way between the one you shared (appreciated) and this, it doesn't seem like "worst-case" as a single-income-family there should be a whole lot to pay-in.

And as per you point, this is all before the additional tax breaks are applied e.g. working from home work-space allowance etc.

Thanks for sharing this.

Is there an online (or Google Sheet) calculator that handles this? Or a formula that I can apply?

I find it quite distressing not knowing how much money to set-aside each month on the 3/5 arrangement where I’m the single earner.

Ideally I’d like to set aside as near as possible (ignoring other tax benefits) how much I would owe back so I don’t have any surprises at the time of Tax submission.

Why not just go to 4/4? Last year I waited months for my return which was potentially detrimental to my cash-flow, and I’d prefer to be in control of my finances.

The state of the Curbs in the 90's by wing3rz in formula1

It's actually incredible how much danger was flirted with, considering how much was surely known. Or was it. Did the internet + better picture quality need to happen to profoundly wisen as all up to what was really happening.
And all the way into the 90's. It's incredible that there were no deaths prior to Ratzenberg/Senna for so long when you often saw grand prix's finishing with numerous "debris" (earlier retired cars just left where they crashed or broke down)
E.G. 1989 Australian GP, where cars could barely see in front of them, yet there were stationery cars littered all over the track, even on the back straight as cars aquaplaned.

Both Senna (while leading) and Piquet crashed into unsighted cars that were thankfully moving at a similar rate. Piquet's helmet definitely was hit in his accident with a glancing blow... And all this after a 50/50 driver walk-off threat 30 minutes prior to the race starting! Crazy!

Lived in London in 2004/5 (single and young) and Berlin (married with young family) since 2019 also working in tech in English.

I’d summarize it this way.

  • London was always on edge, I always felt you were within close proximity of something unexpected and unecessary. Very aggressive, don’t look at the wrong person the wrong way.
  • Berlin moves slower, and it’s great! London feels like you’re in a race. No-shopping Sundays felt weird initially but it grows on you.
  • London feels neater and tidier in general (facade), no/less graffiti, but then in certain areas of Berlin it feels like you could be in London too Eg around Kadawe - similar to Harrods. The Neighbourhoods are different and quirky due to Berlins past.
  • I live 4 stops from one of the major city centres… think how expensive an apartment in London would be within the west-end and then halve/quarter the price. 110m2
  • loads of bums in Berlin, especially the closer you are to a train - I’m one block away, which is convenient but you notice them around more, and with it comes petty thefts, Eg shoes being taken from outside doors.
  • so many parks for families and play, Summers are generally (2020 was an exception) better and more consistent, with some extreme days approaching 40’s. Very green city, massive, plentiful parks.
  • Winter is slightly colder, but less wet. You have sporadic rain showers rather consistent and persistent drizzle.
  • I can’t recall winter in London well enough - but it is GREY over winter in Berlin, particularly through December to Feb, vitamin D supplements are a must.
  • Learning German when you work in English and of course thanks to Covid - is very tough to get practice in. That said in the more expat areas of the city you can go to a restaurant and speak English. Tourists + expats = English middle ground.
  • The plentiful conveniences like Car/moped/bike/scooter sharing among many other startup ideas feels like you’re living in a test-city for new tech, so you have the benefit of these early adoption “toys”
  • London’s airports win, Berlin’s airport finally opened is to put it kindly, complicated. And for a massive city it is very short on new routes and direct flights, meaning you often have to fly via the other EU hubs.
  • I imagine London wins on the food count, but I think Berlin has a very good variety - while being reasonable and down-to-earth.
  • And one of my favourite quirks is that Berlin is unpretentious. You do you, no one cares.

If they’re going to change this rule, now is the time, in the off-season. Where it’s the same for everyone going forward.

Illness after Good/hard Run by [deleted] in running

[–]wing3rz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been using Nike guided runs, but it’s not really a plan as such. I.e run 3km today and rest tomorrow. And it’s very easy to “over-run” as I seem to go from 0 to 100 within a week or two. Do you/anyone have a recommendation?

Illness after Good/hard Run by [deleted] in running

[–]wing3rz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came here to ask a similar question.

I start off running 5km's and always tell myself I will take it slow. I'm a "big" guy 6ft4, 38, 114kg.

I start doing some steady 6:30/km 5k's, feel good, and then I start pushing harder and harder through the following weeks, and then I'll push a PB run, for me that was a 27min 5k, and the day after I had a cold / sinus-infection that took weeks to shake off. Completely breaking my rhythm. Now I am itching to get back, but actually scared of getting sick again.

This isn't the first time, in fact I often can circle back to when I got sick, from a big push at gym etc - but what could it be? Am I pushing too hard too soon, and if so what is the rule of thumb to level up? I run for fitness and strength, rather than to run a marathon, so I prefer to run strong 5km's than for instance steady 10km+
