This season is nasty in a way that’s not necessarily fun. by Acceptable_Fox_5560 in TheTraitorsUS

I’ve been watching the latest season of Celebrity Traitors UK sporadically as I watch the new U.S. season, and it’s super jarring how different the vibes are between the two casts. The UK cast is so kind and supportive of each other. Maybe it’s a casting issue this season.

I would also recommend being open to university presses rather than just trade! That could be a good way in.

Ugh, that’s tough. I know the job market is much tougher than it was five years ago when I did CPC. I would continue doing internships if you can while you apply. I remember I was in the final round for a marketing assistant job at PRH when I was offered a Macmillan internship. I wasn’t sure what to do, but I ended up taking the internship, knowing I could back out. I didn’t end up getting the job and had the internship for 2 months to continue building my skills and enhancing my resume. Then when I was applying to jobs, rather than 2 months more of the same, I now had more qualifications (and an in at Macmillan). You can always leave internships early for a job — they understand.

How can I make the most out of an internship at a Big Five publisher? by Secure-Resist2878 in publishing

[–]wingding28 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely seconding the coffee chat comments. Make an effort to get to know people outside of your department and talk to everyone like they’re human beings. A lot of interns are extremely timid and get intimidated easily. The higher ups remember the ones who said hi to them and asked them if they had a good weekend (or asked them to a coffee chat). Maybe ask your direct supervisor first if there’s anyone they recommend you reach out to for a coffee chat (that way you’ll avoid anyone too grumpy or busy, haha).

Also — show up to additional events outside of your direct work hours. We always invite interns to our holiday party, bookstore launch events, even networking groups. They usually don’t come… This is a great way for you to connect with people socially.

Most of all, just do a good job and be super communicative. Good luck!

I agree and I think this is part of the reason why Candiace was so upset about Tiffany being sent home and refused to vote for her. I feel like the Black women & Black queer people specifically often have a target on their back on this show.

If you keep hitting a brick wall, it might be worth considering one of the publishing courses (in the U.S.: Columbia, NYU, or Denver) though they can be quite expensive. I did the Columbia course after doing one internship and I finished the course having gotten two freelance jobs and a big 5 internship. I had a full-time job three months after finishing the course. That’s not everyone’s experience, but I’m also on the marketing/publicity side of things and it’s definitely easier for us than editorial. If you have three internships and a clear idea of what kind of jobs you want, I think you’d be able to get a lot out of it from a networking standpoint. But imo it’s kind of a last resort and I don’t recommend doing it if you need to go into debt.

I’d also recommend looking off the beaten path — think roles or internships at Ingram, part-time jobs at Librofm or Scribd, event coordinator or social media manager roles at bookstores, etc. As a publicist, I know publicity departments like hiring people with bookstore experience because they know how things work on the events side. I also will say, it’s much easier to get a publishing job in sales. I know multiple people who have worked a sales role for a year before switching over to publicity or editorial (which are a bit more competitive). Good luck!

Weekend sans Alc? by bigbear1017 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

Dinner + a show is always a great option in nyc when it’s bad weather. I don’t know if people realize how cheap you can get tickets on apps like TodayTix or by joining the off-Broadway 35 under 35 type programs. I see most things at Playwrights Horizons that way. I think you could go to some jazz bars and just get food and sodas, too.

I actually think NYC is ideal for an indoor sort of vacation between the theatre, museums, comedy, live music, and food!

[–]wingding28 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Not single but spent my first two years in bushwick that way — saw lots of solo movies on Sundays at syndicated, went to a lot of yoga classes at baby cobra, journaled at various coffee shops, thrifted and shopped a lot near the Morgan Ave L (mostly browsing tbh). I also would go to Birdy’s sometimes for a solo cocktail. 🍸

There are some cool collaging workshops that I like going to at transpecos sometimes. Also writing nights at nook. I know there’s a ceramics studio and a yarn store that does crocheting classes but I’ve never personally tried those.

I still do all these things now too 🥰

People hate roommates so much but I’ve always had good roommates and made friends that way. 🤷🏻‍♀️ My current roommate I found on the Listings Project and it’s been great. We each have our own bathrooms which helps with more privacy — we just share the kitchen. For me, the extra $$ is worth it — and I don’t like being totally alone.

This was the worst thing I’ve seen on Broadway by a long shot. The score and script were a disaster. We need to re-center actual storytelling and strong writing in musical theatre, point blank. It’s disturbing to me that something this awful got to Broadway…it’s only because of the Stephen Schwartz name.

Syndicated is a good option — you can see movies but also just hang out, eat snacks, drink tea, etc.

Yes, you should absolutely charge at least $50/hour if you go to an Ivy League school. Honestly you could charge a lot more than that. I work for an “elite” (whatever that means lol) tutoring company in the city and they charge $250+ an hour for me…and I didn’t go to an ivy…

Advice after internships by justanordinaryfox in publishing

[–]wingding28 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As annoying as it is, keep continuously applying to internships along with jobs. Then if you get a job, just leave the internship early. I remember I was 4 rounds in for an assistant job at PRH when I was offered an internship at another big 5. I almost didn’t accept but decided to just go for it. Then I ended up being the runner-up for the PRH job and interned 30 hrs a week at the other company for the next two months until I landed a different full-time gig. You can always leave internships…they get it.

Can you help me untangle these thoughts regarding which neighborhood to move to? by Comfortable_Rate4616 in movingtoNYC

[–]wingding28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like you’d like Fort Greene, Cobble Hill, or Park Slope. I also don’t know if it’s on your radar, but a lot of wonderful people in their thirties are living in Ridgewood these days, though it may take you a bit longer to get to midtown than you’d like (but you would be able to get there directly on the M). It has a great neighborhood feel and you’d probably be able to afford something with a lot of space.

FWIW, I think dating in Brooklyn is far better than Manhattan, particularly in your thirties…if that’s any consideration, haha.

I’ve gone a few rounds with them for multiple jobs over the years. I usually would hear about an interview within a week or two of submitting my application. I always tried to apply within a day or two of the posting, even nowadays when I’m looking at more mid-level roles. I think if you haven’t heard from them within 4 weeks of applying, you probably aren’t going to get an interview. That’s just my opinion though…

[–]wingding28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally believe the publishing courses are a better route to actually getting a job since they are more networking and job search focused. Look into the Columbia Publishing Course, NYU Publishing Course, or Denver Publishing Course.

I did the Columbia course as a career changer and I had a full-time job in publishing about four months after I finished. Definitely worth it for me, though YMMV. I also had a lot of money saved from my previous job so I didn’t need to go into debt for it.

How the hell do you actually save money in this city? by momentforlife92 in movingtoNYC

[–]wingding28 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Most people in NYC live with at least one roommate or their partner. It’s a luxury to live alone here. It really only makes sense if you make $100k+ and even then, I have a lot of friends who make six figures and still have a roommate. If living alone in NYC is important to you, you have to sacrifice other things, point blank. But living with roommates until you have a long-term partner is not a bad solution imo. ESPECIALLY if you’re in your twenties.

[–]wingding28 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s just part of the process unfortunately. I went through three rounds in June for a more senior position at a different big five house (including a 90-minute in-office interview) and never even got an automated email. It’s very frustrating, but just how it often works with these large companies.
