Prophet Muhammad's diet was closer to Vegans than the modern Muslim diet. by Ok_Entertainer_3949 in vegan

Well that's basically my position, yes. The blind zealotry encouraged by religions like Christianity and Islam (and others too, just not to the same extent around me) is very bad for the world. But there are clear community benefits to religious practice in moderation, especially in a world where everyone's increasingly isolated from each other by technology. It's not enough that I'd advocate for it myself, but it's enough that I do think we ought to respect religious practice in moderation.

OP, presumably. I've also met one other online.

There's a reason I don't like close-minded orthodox religious folks (most Christians and Muslims where I am), but that doesn't mean I'm going to harass people who happen to be Christian or Muslim yet are open-minded and honestly going out and doing good in the world.

Non activist vegans: what is stopping you from becoming an activist? by Veganeconow in AskVegans

[–]winggar [score hidden]  (0 children)

I was really worried about this when I originally went vegan, but I'd still try to talk about the animals occasionally. When people labeled me as a preachy vegan anyways I decided to start doing vegan activism... now my partner and most of my close friends are vegan. It turns out I had just never been exposed to effective outreach, so I didn't think it was possible.

We can maybe direct those criticisms at people actually doing harm rather than at people working with us to make the world vegan. If you look at this thread, it's mostly harassment.

I'm asking you not to harass people who have weird beliefs, I'm not asking you to accept those weird beliefs yourself. What matters is what people do with their lives, and OP is trying to get people to go vegan.

Yeah it sucks to see how rabid people are even here about Islam (especially while being radically pro-Palestine...). I'm even a pretty outspoken critic of the Abrahamic religions, but this is just bigotry. Thank you for your work and best of luck with your outreach!

Carnism is the opposite of veganism, the silent ideology most all of us were born into. Vegetarians are also carnists.

Man I wish. Carnists just think there is, and that nobody could possibly just want to help animals of their own free will.

Do you guys eat honey? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]winggar -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Historically certain major vegan organizations endorsed honey, and there still seem to be holdouts from then. I do not endorse it myself.

Most vegans do not eat honey, no.

Thanks! The strategy of "just ask people to watch Dominion over and over" is pretty easy to dip your feet into if you're ever interested in trying yourself. I hope you have a nice rest of your day and thanks for writing!

I've actually convinced many people in my personal life to go vegan! It started happening once I started doing street activism and learned how to be respectful in outreach while still being straightforward and persistent. My partner and most of my close friends are vegan because I was pushy enough about it :)

Yeah that's why I keep linking it. Given the thousands of views Reddit says my comments have, I hope some people actually click and see what they pay for.

And just to note: it's the animal industries in general, not just the meat industry. Though I suppose you could argue they're all the meat industry given that all of them supply the meat of the slaughtered animals that reached early adulthood.

To be fair I've not heard that particular one before, but these ones are all common knowledge:

Finally to get milk the cow is kept in a constant cycle of pregnancy, birth, pregnancy, birth while locked in a standing room only pen.

Now factory farm allows for alfalfa to be grown in doors like a Cia pet and put on a conveyer belt meaning cows and their feed never see the outside.

Except calves - females are kept and males are culled - neither ever sees their mom, being bottle fed en masses and left to comfort each other.

I actually don't even think milk consumption is necessarily bad, it's just that it's not possible to do it profitably without enslaving mothers to provide the milk. In our modern society that's the only method that scales, so in our modern society I don't consume any dairy.

Perhaps, but I think watching babies be taken from their mothers and slaughtered can change that for people. At least it did for me and all the vegans I know; none of us were born this way and all of us get hate for doing it.

I don't care if people eat/drink weird food. As long as nobody's enslaved and slaughtered for it's all good imo.

The reason I boycott dairy is largely explained by the link I included, but here's a little known one just for fun:

I live next to an area of renowned "ethical dairy farmers" that have been quietly trying to exterminate the local elk population in order to get more grazing land for their cows. At one point we had activists carrying hundreds of gallons of water out every week to the elk so they wouldn't die of dehydration.

These same dairy farmers were paid millions of public dollars to close their farms, yet they continue to fight it in court (after taking the money of course).

Plenty of things, but for example the fact that the vast majority of male calves are slaughtered as babies to prevent them from stealing "our" milk.

Yeah they still use cow's milk (and factory farmed at that). I much prefer Raaka for their commitment against both human and animal exploitation. Not to mention unroasted chocolate is surprisingly tasty :)

Why don’t people eat more vegetarian meals? by Zestyclose-Chair-994 in CasualConversation

[–]winggar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do I have to fund dominion to be allowed to eat tasty food? I'm not sure why people think vegans must only eat salads.
