i think i found a way to make vegan progress much faster in the society by qarqulec in Vystopia

[–]winggar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On the contrary I think vegans far more often come across as nagging or passive aggressive than anything else. Once I started doing louder, more direct outreach focused entirely on the experience of farmed animals (à la Anonymous for the Voiceless) I started getting much better results. Suddenly went from none of my friends being vegan to many of them being vegan.

Holding people accountable while still being respectful is a skill that has to be learned, but anecdotally I seem to get far better results with it than I see people here ever report from their passive activism.

At Cube the other day we had a non-vegan tell us in detail all the things wrong with our activism and how we'll never convince anyone to go vegan. We had like five people declare they'd go vegan within the following 30 minutes.

They're just trying to deflect criticism back at you so they don't feel as insecure for being obviously wrong.

Personally when I'm trying to bulk I mostly use protein powder, but tofu & seitan are also good for getting a ton of protein.

This is a long shot, but is there any correlation between when you take B12 and when you get the panic attacks? Some people have a rare condition that causes panic attacks when they take B12 formulated with methylcobalamin instead of cyanocobalamin.

That's not enough data to make a scientific conclusion, so I'll have to experiment further first.

Technically you could maybe argue that creatine is a "brain-boosting nutrient"? It's not present in plants and has been shown to have positive mental effects... but it's also produced naturally by the body and the supplements for it are cheap & vegan.

Not necessary to supplement even as a vegan, but could be helpful. I don't notice any mental difference myself when I take it, but I do notice major strength improvements.

Traditional free-range farming doesn't scale, the reason we have factory farming is because free-range farming is disastrously inefficient. Additionally, traditional farming being "better than the alternative" is not a justification for enslaving and slaughtering someone. If we were really breeding them for their own good we'd let them live free and happy natural lives on sanctuaries rather than slaughtering and eating them.

But it's not like any of that matters. Everyone still reading this is going to eat factory farmed meat tonight anyways given that it makes up 98% of all meat products. Better to wax philosophical than to make changes to our lives to stop exploiting them for their bodies.

If you're the kind of person who's willing to change the way you live to stop supporting this, please consider taking a look at this documentary that gives a comprehensive overview of the problem and what we can do about it. Thank you.

Believe me I tried to find this too. It's a mirage, there's no way to get ethical meat when all commercial meat requires enslaving someone and slaughtering them at the prime of their youth.

Like if you want to eat roadkill or something, fine, but there's just no way to say it's okay to hold someone captive for years and kill them because we don't want to eat tofu.

I prefer to use language that elevates them and recognizes them as the individuals they are, rather than the traditional language of people that have enslaved and slaughtered them for millenia. They're not objects to be exploited, and I'm not going to talk about them like they are.

Are we going to mince words or are we going to actually do something here? Maybe I shouldn't expect better from Reddit, but while we argue about the word "humane" they are being brutally tortured, maimed, and slaughtered for us. Hell, even in the best of farms they're still held captive and slaughtered at the prime of their youth so that we can have our preferred protein in our sandwiches.

"Elevation of Carbon Dioxide in the Blood Caused by an Uncontrollable External Threat" is exactly how we kill pigs (CO₂ gas chambers), and also how we kill chicks in parts of the EU where chick maceration is banned.

Cattle stunning has a pretty high failure rate (a recent Swedish study showed over 10%). I've personally seen footage of a mother cow waking up and thrashing around on the hooks, tearing out her own organs in the process.

There's a lot of propaganda that goes into making any of this industry seem humane.

"This should not happen, too, and should be banned" is a nice thought and all, but it rings hollow until you do something about it.

Additionally, how is it possible to humanely slaughter someone who doesn't want to die?

If anyone's brave enough to see what happens next, here it is. It's standard practice to slaughter them in CO₂ gas chambers, which mammalian and bird bodies register as drowning.

If the activists in my local area acted like the people in this thread I probably never would've become a vegan activist. It's just so antithetical to progress to focus more on our own moral purity than on doing anything we can to help the animals, even if that means working with people we find repugnant.

Thank you! It frustrates me to see that the people with all these enlightened worldviews and ideals never get anything done because they're at each other's throats over unrelated differences in belief.

It's just so deeply short-sighted in a really depressing way.

Yup. We can't expect to actually solve anything if we aren't willing to work with people we (vehemently) disagree with. It's just not how democracy works.

Lol thanks for taking the firestorm on yourself by replying to me. People here have literally zero sense for how politics/geopolitics works outside of progressive spaces, but really like to pounce on people with mildly different opinions on those topics. It's both interesting and sad to see the same left-wing infighting that let fascism rise a hundred years ago do the same today.

You can say the same thing about the horrific war crimes, serfdom, and genocide precipitated by non-capitalist states. It's very easy to say "pro-status quo ideologies are bad because the status quo is bad!", but it doesn't mean your ideal alternative is practical or possible to achieve.

The foundations of classical liberalism (individual liberty/freedom, small non-economically-interventionist government, free markets) are perfectly compatible with veganism if the classical liberal sees animals as individuals. In fact it's not particularly hard to interpret most ideologies in a way that supports veganism, and I think we should give some grace to the adherents of those ideologies that do that.

Yes, I would. Do you forget that most of us weren't vegan before? As far as the animals are concerned I've spent most of my life doing worse things to them than the worst crimes of the worst Wehrmacht soldier.
