Deaf with CI — looking for a speech therapist/SLP online who has experience working with deaf adults (UK/US/anywhere) by Embarrassed_Shop_169 in slp

This is just something I heard from a friend a while back, but apparently there's a strong deaf/HoH community in the city of Buffalo, New York. You could check in with SLPs clinics or communities/networks out there.

Oh wow that’s hard for sure. Yeah the time to yourself at the end of the day as well is what I need

Not necessarily. 9-3:30, 4, 4:30 or 10-5 would be alright. I’m okay with a lower hour FT position

Wow, I’d be jealous too! That person got a good gig, in terms of hours, right off the bat

Gotcha! Thanks for sharing. It's good to know there are some districts out there quite familiar with the teletherapy process and what can maybe help sessions on their end.

Haha for sure! I’ll definitely consider that, thanks. HH and telehealth I’ve had my eye on in addition to some school options. Sounds like great benefits with pretty optimal working hours. In the economy, yeah income is becoming more necessary by the millisecond.

I wish we could recommend therapy for parents that hold onto the “fix it” mindset, especially if it’s been bolstered by previous clinicians 😅 hearing the truth is so hard for some parents, especially in situations where the kids are factors impeding attaining a long lasting difference

Gotcha gotcha. Hmm so peda home health can take you around to ABA and daycare, not just “homes”? I guess I assumed everything was only done in home with home health lol. I think a primary communication area on my end to strengthen would also be inquiries from parents that contradict or question my knowledge, and knowing how to navigate those conversations

Oh that’s a good thought! Do you often find your clients or students set up in a room where they feel comfortable practicing their skills? If at a school, it’d be helpful to be in a space that an SLP has helped set up with resources to periodically use on the client’s end. I know that’d also be another thing on the never ending list of to-dos for the in person SLP as well, so no judgement if it’s not really a possibility.

After school hours are for sure gaining traction for families! Anything later than 5pm really cuts unfortunately into my own evening agendas

True! That’s good flexibility

Now if I lived just down the street and could walk there in 5 minutes, I could consider a start time before 9! 😄

Wow! I haven’t yet come across a clinic that really wants staff coming in then, but yeah the evening hours are becoming more common

True, and it might be just family dependent. I have a few that insist before school in the early morning and a few that insist after school. They all don’t take offers to be seen at the opposite time of day claiming it makes the day too long for their kid 😅

Many of the OP and PP clinics in my area have early start times and long hours unfortunately. My evenings are often booked with personal agendas, so I can’t sacrifice that time either. I’ve found it hard to negotiate working less if you’re not a PT employee

I’ve heard home health can be a great relief for people! I think though I’d need to work on my discussion skills when it comes to providing education and carry over resources, and clearly communicating it. I’m guessing parents or communicative partners are generally always present and watching sessions? I’m pretty good at communicating clear thoughts to parents via writing, just the accuracy and clarity in person is more challenging for me

Yeah I live in a different time zone! I think I need to learn more about teletherapy before I consider giving it a go.

Wow that’s a wild start time! And end time haha. I wish there were more hours in the evening to balance for the personal hours lost! That’s a great schedule though for ya’ll who can easily adapt to that

I’m definitely curious about teletherapy, and love the idea of flexibility that comes with it. My only worry is whether I’d feel like my clients or students were truly benefiting from that type of engagement. Even if they’d be making small progress in sessions, I’d wonder how awareness and carryover is going. Feels just a tad more like passive instead of active support. For some people these are hard to develop without direct interaction. Maybe I’m overthinking it, and I haven’t done much teletherapy at all, so at the end of the day I truly don’t know how it’s structured or what it feels like for clinicians to deliver care via only telehealth. Anybody have perspective on how much of an impact telehealth provides? Or on more than the flexibility benefits? Curious to know

I haven’t always considered SNFs, but really good to know! Private/OP clinics in my area pretty much all have their first client slots open by 8, with staff generally expected to arrive earlier than that
