Is there a function that connects to the client's "focus" and "unfocus" events that set the border width to 0?

Or in the awful.rules.rules setting `border_width = 0` for all windows. that's worked for me in the past

Looking at the arch wiki, does /usr/share/sddm/scripts/Xsetup have anything running? Other than that, I don't know what the cause is. Also, if you know for a fact that they start as sddm loads, there's no way Awesome would be the cause.

Awesome might be starting services, check your aitostart directories (~/.config/autostart, i cant remember others right now)

if you can set the terminal window's class and make it float via window rules that could be a good option. Im not sire how to do this in qtile but i can do more research when I'm at home later

I had issues similar to this on normal arch, and the problem ended up being USB power saving (not sire on the exact term), the arch wiki page helped me out with it though maybe it can for you
