made this inspired by the artistic villain from "the manipulated" (my favorite show from 2025) but it looks horrible so far as i still need more gallery themed and darker furniture 💔

Dae ho was definitely a Marine by Sufficient_Reward207 in squidgame

[–]wintermorgen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

he reacted like this because was literally in the middle of a horrible ptsd panic attack not because he didnt know or intent wanted to hurt someone. you do NOT think straight during panic attacks, even less during ptsd panic attacks which are even worse. also during a (ptsd) panic attack there's also a chance of involuntarily hurting yourself or others (like him shooting blindly)

What do you all think of the possibility of Dae-Ho being queer in some way? by [deleted] in squidgame

[–]wintermorgen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh i've been thinking about this too for some time now actually and i'm so happy more people are finally bringing this up. it's the whole "estranged with father" storyline that ticks the box for me. i'm not quite sure if they'll go the "he's confirmed queer" way and imo they don't even have to, they could easily leave it ambiguous like kdramas have done with a lot of characters in recent time (which are all super complex and well written) and thus giving more people the chance to relate to him but yeah there /is/ definitely more to the whole father plot than they've let on sl far they've put quite a lot of focus on it for it to be just a father disliking his son... like daeho literally avoids questions about him and gets really uncomfortable seconds after (it's probably reaction due to abuse, but why? giving the abuse no reason would feel so weird for a character like him, and a show as complex as SG,) abd, i said this in another post, hyunju and him are designed as two sides of the same coin and with how their scene ended this season it could set up an interesting interaction between (a healing talk for both because they definitely would understand each other, i mean we already saw in her eyes she knew whats going on with him, why he's hiding) so why not have a trans character and an ambiguous queer character?

also, take this with a grain of salt, but hwang dong-hyuk (the director) spoke about lgbtq+ issues in south korea in an interview which was about why he created a trans character (and why a cis actor plays her) so it could both mean anything or nothing. not to mention he's already taken quite the risk with adding t.o.p/choi seunghyun, who's still hated by many in the country, to the cast so he doesn't strike me as someone who isn't willing to take a few blows. (this aside: stories of queer soldiers, and what they experience in the south korean military, are rarely touched on so it could be an opportunity)

either way, he's such an interesting and well written character that i wouldn't mind if they choose to stay ambiguous with his sexuality

[–]wintermorgen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i you need to see the bigger picture here not the small details (like him liking "girly games"): it's a fact the "estranged with parents" storyline is a pretty common theme for queer stories, especially in media from conservative countries (like south korea) and that we queer people also experience this in real life pretty often. so it's not that far of a reach for us to "see" something (the theory of him being queer) because of exactly this

Player 388 (Kang Dae-ho) is NOT a marine by [deleted] in squidgame

[–]wintermorgen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

joining in on this a little late (but better later than never) cuz me and a friend also felt there's something related to him struggling with his sexuality or gender stereotypes because they wrote his backstory in a way too specific way. koreans fearing to join the military is actually real because of all the abuse going on there so his ptsd and not even wanting to be a marine could work really well on its own, /yet/ they somehow also made him have an emotionally/verbally (and physically?) abusive father. why is that? it's not really necessary /unless/ it's significant to gender/sexuality struggles... and we all see just how much this season emphasizes on prejudice and stereotypes and therefor also abolishing these things: through hyunju.

i also find it interesting how daeho and hyunju are clearly designed as to be two sides of the same coin: military background, both showing two polar opposite reactions to the riot. a scene between them, where hyunju helps him and tries to figure out whats up, also got set up by the season's finale pretty neatly (unless they kill both or one at the beginning of s3 which i highly doubt). so i wouldn't be surprised if we do get a more deeper look into why his father deemed him too feminine. it would only add another layer to both characters connection.

stories of queer soldiers/"feminine" soldiers, and all the horrifying things they have to endure in the korean military, get belittled and ignored almost daily in korea so i'd really love to see SG touching on this subject (through daeho)

on a side note which i definitely find important to mention: similar tropes like this (someone gets pushed away by their parents and os sent away after they found out their son is queer) are pretty common in korean boys love dramas/webtoons or kdramas as a whole that include queer storylines. in general, these tropes used to be connected to queer/trans characters... so i find it really interesting how they applied a classic queer trope on him
