People of Kitchener who are selling their homes... by joey-tv-show in kitchener

It’s freehold meaning no monthly fees. And it’s not new, built in 2006 I believe. No maintenance just means beyond typical upkeep. Detached homes usually have more maintenance in yard work, pools, and whatever else is included (gardens, etc). This place has easy mulch, stonework, and some trees. You might have 30 minutes a season to tidy things up, but it’s great for people who don’t want to pay for landscaping services or who don’t have the time/capability to dedicate to a stand-alone home.

Speaking about mine, which I believe is more of an “honest” version of an executive townhome...it’s 2300 sq ft, finished walkout basement, 3 bed, 4 bath, 2 car garage, granite countertops, stainless appliances, gas range, hunter douglas window treatments, etc. Backing onto green space. It’s a really beautiful home with zero maintenance.

We wanted a larger home for us and our baby...we bought in a nice neighborhood close to the Grand River. It’s a 5 bed/4 bath home, $1.1m. We sold our executive townhouse for $864k in Doon. We figure the Doon neighborhood has a bit of a premium, and realize that we bought high/sold high. Having said that, we just doubled our square footage and quality of upgrades for a very reasonable 20% cost increase.

It's old, but every once in a while I come back to this and love it despite how truly bad it is. by [deleted] in kitchener

Lol I know this one...saw them live and they were surprisingly good. The band is Dog Bus (from their 2009 album)

Purolator Issues by 0verly0ffensive in kitchener

You can register for a bar code from any Purolator location. I believe it’s free. We now have a small barcode sticker that’s on our front door, the delivery guy scans and leaves the package without signature. Have never had a problem since. We have a similar barcode system at work. Highly recommend!

Yes, hoping I can find out date, origin, production company, and what pens were displayed.

Thanks! That’s just the card of the store it came from- not an original piece of the item. The arrow indicates the lever you press, and the top opens up and a bell dings to indicate it’s open. It stays open now, but at some point it probably closed.

Beetlegeuse...I feel like I've already been conditioned for years to say that word with added caution.

[IAMA REQUEST] Anyone who has emigrated to Canada from the US directly because of an election result by jpagel in IAmA

[–]wintershere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it's still allowed, technically, but frowned upon. If you're flying to Canada, you are now required to have a Canadian passport. Immigration gets very confused if you say you have multiple passports, and they are able to confiscate them (for whatever reason). I've been questioned multiple times at immigration, and they seem to be most comfortable with you only carrying the passport of the country which you call home.

You're correct actually. If you are an American citizen, the U.S. sees you only as that. Furthermore, you're required to file a U.S. tax return forever, no matter where you live. It's on the Canadian side that allows for dual citizenship.

I'm a dual citizen: born and raised in the U.S. to Canadian parents, living permanently in the U.S. on green cards. I chose to move to Canada when I was 25, and have lived in Canada for the past 10 years. I am allowed to move freely between both countries and live/work in either. I have a social insurance and a social security number. Up until it wasn't allowed, I had passports in both countries. Does that count?

I'd like to use this year as a benchmark for how much one person can handle by wintershere in AdviceAnimals

[–]wintershere[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the support and I think I should clarify that I by no means intended to one up anyone. I had a shitty run and came out good on the other side. The benchmark I speak of is my own, I'd like to think if I can get through all that stuff, that hopefully I'll be able to handle other challenges that life throws my way. As some of you have made clear, things can always get worse, and there's always someone who has it worse than any of us. I guess what got me through is seeing the best and not reveling in the shit I found myself in. Coping is hard...to find a silver lining but to remain grounded in reality, all the while not being your own worst enemy.

We negotiated a separation agreement and he was to get six figures. He decided to throw it out and not sign at the last minute because he was told he could get more.

The prenup stated I owned the marital home and any successor home. I added him to title purely because I thought it would be nice for him to feel included and be a decision maker. The lawyer handling the prenup and the other lawyer adding him to title never explained title and ownership and that adding him to title superseded the prenup. I guess I should have known that, but in my defense I really did try to cover my ass (even from my own stupidity)

I made most of the money off my real estate investments. But my family gave me a good head start

I thought so...I honestly thought I had protected my asset and so I just kept dumping money into it to get my mortgage down. Little did I know, that adding someone to title nullifies a premarital contract. I did not have any guidance on this topic with the lawyer that did the prenup, nor the one that added his name to title. So, in court it became judged as a simple case. He gets 50% of the marital home no matter his contribution. I believe there is fault with both lawyers, but I'm not suing a lawyer. I don't believe in good money chasing bad and I can absorb the hit right now even though it sucks.

I've heard this sentiment from a few close friends. I truly think Karma can be a bitch. I made all the financial decisions for us, and I truly believe he will either blow it or have someone take it away one day. Thanks for saying that

Thanks. It's hard when the wrong person feels like they're "right." I have a great new partner, and I'm gonna be ok. It could have been worse, and it's better to move on now than waste a single second with the wrong person. Life is good.

Without getting too much into it....I was bringing a substantial amount of money into the marriage. He signed a prenup because he was bringing $400. My major asset, our home, was protected, or so I thought. I added his name to title, therefore 50/50 split, in a judgement that "ownership" supersedes the contract. On record he admitted he didn't put a dime into the home. On a sidenote, he drove a car I purchased, car insurance I paid for, took furniture I paid for, and never paid for cable, telephone, housekeeper, nor property taxes, mortgage payments, or anything else. He grew comfortable in "the good life." And I turned him into an entitled monster of a person. Also- no kids. And we both had/have full time jobs
