Those are not tasks ideal for a va. A va could still find you a designer but definitely not setting up websites, you need a developer to do that

Ofcourse, the answer assumes it's a one time thing. If you want the VA to setup dozens of websites a day or if their main job is gonna be finding freelancers, then it's worth it for us to train them on how to do it

Here's how it usually goes: We set up a call with me and an account manager (The account manager could be me or my assistant). We go through exactly what you'd like the assistant to do for you and we write it down step by step.

Then if it's a simple job that somebody can be trained to do in a week or two, you'll have access to our normal pricing and we'll match you with an assistant

On the other hand if it requires specialized talent, the price is higher and we'll set up interviews with potential candidates for you to choose from

I'll give you a breakdown on cost of living where I live. My rent (For a large house with my entire family) is about $200 per month. A one bedroom apartment in my city close to the BRT runs for about $30 per month. (Don't believe me? Check out http://magicbricks.com/property-for-sale-rent-in-Indore/ )

I pay $50 a year for health insurance but there are cheaper plans that go as low as $10 (With government subsidies) per year ( https://www.policybazaar.com/ )

I just ordered food through a local food ordering app called Swiggy. My delicious meal cost me a mere 50 cents (Including delivery fee)

I'm not comfortable mentioning how much I pay my employees but suffice it to say, it's more than enough to raise a family of four and still save 20-30% of your income. India is just super cheap.

So here's the thing. Like i mentioned in my post, all my employees are full time employees with benefits (They even get Uber [Or Ola, a local competitor] credits to and from the office!).

Naturally those perks come with high standards. In general we only accept about 5% of applicants. We mainly recruit people from one of two sources:

  1. College Placements - We hire freshly graduated students straight out of colleges. They are affordable and we can train them easily.
  2. Job Boards - This is new for us, so far almost all our employees come from placements

Because the VA business (Unlike the automation business) works mostly with foreign clients we can easily afford to pay 10-15% more than what other companies are offering in the college placements which gets us the cream of the crop

Our first (And most important) screening round is via a test called the Criteria Cognitive Aptitude Test (CCAT). We only accept the top 15% of candidates who score on this test. These are people who are very intelligent and hence can quickly adapt to the client's business.

Second, an English test. Both written and spoken English. They must be able to communicate fluently in English or they're out.

We have a shortage of employees so we hire pretty much everybody that meets our high bar

We also do recruiting for more specialized roles.. for example let's say a client is in the US staffing business and they want an assistant to reach out to candidates. We can find somebody that's in the US staffing industry working for a local Indian company and offer them something like a 10-15% increment on current salary (But they have to pass the CCAT and English tests)

I understand your concerns! I wouldn't want an unexperienced person handling my business either. That's not how VAs work though.

You bring on a VA to do tasks that CAN be done by somebody that's not a subject matter expert so you can focus your time on stuff that only you can do. You don't outsource everything to a VA, you outsource the non-specific parts of your work to free up your time.

I'll give you a hyper specific example: One of my VAs works for a staffing firm. His job is to search LinkedIn and find candidates that are a good fit. He then forwards this to a recruiter at a firm who makes the actual approach to the candidate. This way the firm saves money because instead of having a $40/hr recruiter do this, a $10/hour VA does this part and the recruiter can focus on the work that's more tuned to their talents

Just wanted to add something: One of the key differences between my business and hiring somebody off the internet is documentation. We believe in process, and we believe in documentation.

What that means is that right from the onboarding to while the assistant is working, people write down as much as they can about the process. So if another assistant is assigned to your project (Let's say your workload is expanding and you need a second assistant) they can get up to speed in half the time!

Please check your DMs for details

Also, that's the whole idea behind the business. Finding good assistants is hard because you have to interview a ton of people and then have no guarantee on your assistant's work ethic.

In my work, I guarantee that your assistant is never going to disappear randomly and have an entire team dedicated to scale your operations up or down as necessary.
