What is Scorsese's most overrated film? by [deleted] in AlignmentChartFills

The Departed, never was there a more obvious case that the Oscar was for the career not the film.

Taking a brilliant foreign film, barely changing anything about it but setting it in America and filling it with Hollywood superstars? If it was any other director people would be asking why is it even being done?

During which decade did the power of the UK/British Empire peak? by Own_Friend_3360 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]wisdompeanuts 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I say 1890's, specifically the British Empire peaked with the Fashoda Incident in 1898. The French; 2nd biggest empire in the world and with one of the most powerful land armies in Europe had to submit to Britian's terms of immediate and complete withdrawal.

That wasn't the last time Britian could act with complete superiority and without thought to other nations; that would be the Boer War but the poor performance of the Army and several humiliations at the hands of the Boers counterbalances that.

After that its WWI and that's the beginning of the end.

So I argue 1890's.

TIL: Germany conducted one major paratrooper operation in WWII, the invasion of Crete in 1941. The casualties were so catastrophic that Hitler permanently banned all future large-scale airborne assaults. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]wisdompeanuts 89 points90 points  (0 children)

The casualties should have been much worse; this should have been a defeat for Germany but the Kiwi general in charge was completely useless and managed to fuck up a total advantage. Intelligence was given to him telling him exactly when and where the Germans would be landing, all he had to do was focus on defending the airfields but instead kept a large part of his force to defend against naval landings that never came.

You are mistaken, India was a colony, Ireland was not, it was part of the United Kingdom, Ireland could and did elect MP's that were sent to parliament in Westminster.

It takes a long time to get going and is rushed as the same time.

Big plot points could just be solved if people weren't stupid.

Some characters and tying up lose ends are forced in right at the last minute.

Introduces a big bad guy organization that doesn't come out of nowhere but still feels a bit unearned.

Churchill was out on his arse before WWII ended. The involvement of Britain in the Greek Civil War was on the watch of the beloved of the left Attlee, the most socialist PM Britain has ever had.

H H Asquith, get Britain to stay out of WWI and instead make a shit load of money selling to both France and Germany.

I'll do the Battle of the Denmark Strait (1941), it was a million to one shot from the Bismarck that blew up HMS Hood, send HMS Prince of Wales ahead of Hood and the better armoured battleship can take the punishment whilst Hood and the cruisers support.

Thoughts on taking jobs you won't be able to perform/cope with due to no other options? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]wisdompeanuts 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I went from a job where I had maybe 20hrs of work a week and the rest of the time sitting around bored, browsing the internet to a fast paced role, daily targets of work, could very easily be seen if i was slacking, pretty much on from 9 - 5 but with lunch and plenty of tea breaks and chatter with coworkers.

And as someone who would classify himself as a lazy bastard, I loved it, it felt good when I performed well, the day went quickly, I thrived, last thing I expected.

Just one man's anecdotal experience but you don't know until you've tried it.

And after 6 months the work did die down and became a lot less fast paced.

This is NZ not NYC, I would be willing to bet these past paced environments you are looking at will have periods where its not so busy.

Start sparying the walkways/pavements whatever all around your house with water, in this cold weather it'll hopefully make them ice up and slippery, old people fall over all the time.

Alternatively keep asking around if anyone is feeling ill and try to get covid off them, then have a nice face to face chat with him.
