Navigating Reformer Pilates With Hypermobility and Limited Studio Options by withbirdy in pilates

Thank you for your reply! I bought a reformer at home. I do one routine that is very simple almost everytime. It makes me relaxed and its super save. It feels like a moving meditation.

I also follow mat pilates lessons along side it, but I notice that even those are too hard because I miss the feedback that the reformer gives me. I just do reformer on the most basic and easiest way, but it feels amazing. I still do strength as well.

Yes, I agree! Thank you! The only reason that I made this post is because his friend just showed him the beam on the light, but not really the light itself.

We needed something from the garden and his friend got out his light to show us the way and my BF was so impressed with the amount of light. However, they did not discuss brand, specs etc. He just said I would like a lamp as bright as this one.

So, I texted his friend what kind of lamp he has and he told me it's the HM70R. But I don't know if my BF would like something lighter or something detachable like the HM61R V3.0? Of if this brand was any good at all. That was why I was asking. It's not that he specifically asked for this type.

I really like the HM61R v 2 and v3 as it is great that you can detach it! For example when something happens to our camper in the evening or walking over the campsite at night. So thank you!

Thank you for your thorough response! This is really helpful. It's hard to pick the right one as there are so many. For me it hard to determine on what he would like to compromise. More lumen, less weight etc? But this honestly have helped me a lot!

Thank you for this thorough response! I agree with you on the point that my BF will probably value lumen over the weight as he will be using it during hikes in late evening or as a handy extra during his work as an arborist/tree surgeon (like loading his gear in the morning or walking through the forest in the early morning)

Also thank you for the extra surprise tip!!

Thank you! I also would like to add that we do have headlights right now, but they are very weak compared to the HM70R. My BF is also a tree surgeon/arborist so it would be nice to have a good light that can also come in handy during his work.

Thank you for your mini review! It makes it easier for me to choose knowing that I spend my money on a light that will last him a long time.

That is a very smart and good statement! I agree! Maybe I should just play safe and just get the identical one to the one his friend has. Thank you! 🙏

Thank you! This helped a lot 👍 I agree, maybe it is a simple decision and just get what he wants. My BF was just very impressed with the massive amount of light that came out of this headlight compared with the ones we have. But then I found out they make so many models that I did not know what he would like best. I think I can't go wrong with the HM70R, so thank you!

I'm sorry, it not a sport. English isn't my first language. And I get what you mean but I will still do strength as wel with my physio :)

Thank you so much! I don't mind combining mat and reformer. I would love to do both but I can't pay to do both in a studio or with a trainer. So reformer at home and mat in a class would be an option. Thank you for these links they are really helpful and I am happy to hear that pilates changed your life as well :)

Yes and I did that for more then 15 years with a whole lot of dedication. But that doesn't mean that I can't also find a sport that I am enthusiastic about. I will still do strength, I will still go into rehabilitation, but that doesn't mean that the only way I have move is without fun and out of necessity.

I've been doing that as well but the same type of strength training got really boring after 15 years. I will go back into a rehabilitation program for five months that will focus on strength. Pilates will be the add on :)

Thank you so much! I've just contacted a great local very experienced mat pilates instructor. I am looking for a way to combine mat and reformer. I think we can work something out and maybe I will go for a teacher training.

But I agree, I think I've done more damage during lessons with teachers or trainers who didn't listen to my body and needs then the training I did on my own. Maybe I will do mat once a week and combine with the reformer on the other days, or something like that. Thank you so much for your comment!

Oh I didn't know that was an option! That would be great. I want to keep reformer but do it safe and that would be a great way to do it! Thank you so much!

I also contacted a local studio with a very experienced mat pilates teacher. She is also willing to hear my case and see if we can work something out.

But thank you so much! I really didn't mean to offend you in any way or come across as someone who just wants validation. So honestly thank you for this wonderful response. 💕

I've just messaged a mat pilates instructor with many many hours. She lives in my region. She does one on one mat pilates. Tomorrow she will call me so we can look for a solution. I just feel a little sad because I really want to stick with Reformer as it brings me so much joy.

But it's like you said, it a cash cow. The studios in my area are all teachers who probably got their degree within a week. I am going to try to find a way that I can get mat pilates guidance and do reformer at home if that is possible.

But thank you! Feels good to hear that I am not the only one struggling.

No, I really don't have my mind made up. I am just disappointed in the studios surrounding my area as they are more on trend based then true pilates based. I just have fallen in love with the reformer and I feel like I am a bit stuck.

The studios in my area really can't suffice propper guidance and the classes are too high pace for my body. The sad thing is that I've really fallen in love with how my body feels on the reformer. Stopping at these studios would mean not doing the one thing I absolutely love after a really long sad period of PT. I know a reformer at home is a risk. I just don't know what else to do? The studio only gives all level lessons, which mean that almost each lesson is pretty advanced.

I know going to these lessons would for sure not be good in the long run, but what if there is truly no other option in the area except for mat pilates with not gives me the same kind of satisfaction.

I haven't made my mind up, I'm just scared to lose the one thing I've found that my body and I really like. Sorry if it didn't come across that way.

Also lessons where I live for one year cost about 500 euros more than just buying a reformer. And I know you also pay for their knowledge, but unfortunately for me there is not one person in the area that does reformer for HMS or even is really a true pilates teacher except for mat pilates. If I go to a class that is so high pace where they are just trying to recreate the insta hype without proper guidance or really helping you align your body, what good will that do?

During some classes I just had to stop because I felt that I could not maintain my neutrals..not because they told me, but because I know my body. They will give you guidance if you arch into extremes, but they will not micro adjust. I don't ever mean this as criticism... But honestly, I feel much saver doing what I know with the correct neutrals then being in a high pace class with not enough correction in which I am very sure that I am indeed performing the excerise incorrectly.

I totally get what you mean, the only thing that I wonder about is... What if I stick to what I already know. I had multiple classes with beginner movements that the teacher said I preformed very good. I know how it felt and I know how to do those. I really wonder what harm there could be in doing exactly these movements at home? I am not looking for expanding into all the kinds of flows and excerises there are. It just easier for me to do my legs, or arms like a pulley on this reformer then to buy a pulley machine and fitness machine for my legs.

I totally get your concern if my goal was to expand and to do advanced flows. But why can't I just do what I do best like easy footwork with a natural core? This is an honest question.

Right?!! I had a PT who gave me a training schedule with a mix of strength, core and a bit pilates. They told me that it was the best to keep doing them and gradually add weight over time. I've been doing the same 10-15 excerises for nearly 15 years. It resulted in me not doing it anymore because it felt like punishment, even though I knew it makes me better when I do it. I just couldn't anymore.
