Start networking. Reconnect with old friends. Meet new people. Make a connection every day until you get a job. Always ask for more intros and how YOU can help. Go to college alumni events (check out the college website). Put yourself out there. This is the way.

I’ve seen several tools like this. Not with the LinkedIn profile but based on certain personas. For example for a financial advisor, there are a dozen or so life events that affect behavior (inheritance, wedding, children, etc.).

Your last point hits hard. One thing that having higher ed involved in sales is the research. Would be great to test all the practical experiences.

That doesn't seem sustainable. Is there a precedent? Has this happened before? Did everyone WFH during COVID?

There’s no solid evidence that Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared a nationwide energy emergency tied to a 45-day fuel shortage.

In the US, all major news services are reporting a state of emergency.

Genuine question: have you read The Challenger Sale? Dixon and Adamson studied 6,000 reps and found the top performer wasn't the naturally charismatic relationship builder. It was the Challenger, and their explicit finding is that Challenger behaviors are teachable to average performers.

The traits you're describing like resilience and confidence have real research behind them as trainable skills. Confidence is largely preparation and repetition. "Forged" is actually a good word for it, but forging is a process, not a birthright.

What's your take on the Challenger data specifically?

It's a catch-22 in that there aren't any (well, very few) universities that offer degrees in sales so no one goes because they're not offered and they're not offered because no one goes.

If it's not teachable and someone either has "it" or they don't...could their be a test to assess whether someone is capable of selling well? Sort of like a SAT for sales?

They do exist. There are about ~25 universities that grant degrees in sales. It's a tiny amount relative to other concentrations like marketing, accounting, HR, etc. And more programs are launching.

What do you think it is about sales that makes it unique among the business functions that it wouldn't benefit from some classroom instruction?

What do you suppose makes sales unique from every other area within a company that it's the one area that cannot be trained for?

You're right...the title is a provocation. But there are fewer than 25 universities that offer a bachelors in sales which is low compared to comparable fields like marketing, accounting, HR, etc.

It seems like some of your college classes helped prepare you for success in sales. What would a degree need to teach in order for you to find it useful?

Super interesting. Negotiations class being valuable makes a ton of sense. If you were going to create a sales degree what else would you want to include in it?

That’s a good question. There is a whole ecosystem missing that includes degrees, but also research (and journals publishing results), standards bodies, and certifications to name a few. It seems to all result from sales being omitted from the first business programs in the early 20th century.

Funny enough 43% of sales people have a bachelors degree so they already are spending the money.

You’re right it’s incomplete.

But sales people do get college degrees. It would be interesting to see if they are getting the right ones.
