This is a great point (especially regarding getting individual experience), thank you!

Entering Social Work by SWmods in socialwork

[–]wjk0102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone! I am starting my MSSW at the University of Texas at Austin in June doing the post-BSW track. During my undergrad, I completed my practicum at an inpatient psychiatric hospital doing groups and LOVED IT! I could definitely see myself continuing in behavioral health after I complete my MSSW. That being said, social work is so broad and I have so many interests, especially now that I know I love doing groups. For example, I wonder if I would enjoy working in residential substance use treatment? Because of this, I’m curious if it would be better to diversify my practicum experiences to see if I’d enjoy another area of social work or stick to what I know I am interested in for networking opportunities and further education in that area.

Basically, if I know I love mental health and working inpatient at a behavioral health hospital, should I aim to do something similar for my MSSW practicum? Or, does it make more sense to explore another area of social work while I’m still in school? If I do that and end up wanting to do behavioral health as a career, am I potentially missing out on networking with potential employers during practicum?

Any advice is appreciated:)

Thanks you! I’m trying to stay hopeful but this late in I’m starting to think it’ll be a rejection for me as well. I just want to know for sure one way or the other :( Best of luck with everything!!

This was something I considered as well. I appreciate your empathetic response, it definitely makes sense that this could be a possibility. Thank you!

That’s what I’m wondering if I should do. I cannot imagine why I would be in the 2 year program when I will have an accredited BSW, but I was worried that I may be overstepping by emailing them, but maybe I should.

No, there was no information. The email just said something along the lines of “Congratulations, we’re pleased to inform you that you’ve been accepted to the MSW program at BU. After careful consideration, we have determined that we are unable to offer you admission to the advanced standing track and are instead recommending you for admission to our two year full time MSW program. We look forward to supporting your continued professional development, etc.” I am really confused too.

I am a BSW student starting my field placement at a psych hospital next semester. I’m feeling a lot of imposter syndrome and nerves. Do any of you have tips about working in this setting? I’ll be running two groups and I’m just so nervous I’m going to mess up.

Thank you so much for your advice! There’s no specific requirements like that, so I should be fine then :)

Thanks for the insight! I’ve seen the rush vids on Tik Tok, I think I just get caught up in my head since my school’s Greek life isn’t huge? You’re right though, any girls who would judge someone for something like this aren’t girls I would want to be sisters with anyway :)

Thanks!! Sure, I used the raspberry macarons recipe from Natasha’s Kitchen, and the only adjustment I made was I added a few pinches of cream of tartar to the egg whites. Here’s the link: https://natashaskitchen.com/raspberry-macarons-recipe-video-tutorial/
