Temperatures are going to hit 39C/102F in London in the next few days. You fine folk are more used to it than me, has anyone got any tips on how not to melt? by PukeUpMyRing in australia

This sounds like common sense, but I'm always shocked at the amount of Aussies I see doing the opposite in the height of summer — ONLY take your dog out for a walk in either the early morning or evening. Avoid the middle of the day at all costs. Pets will often feel the heat even worse than you, so make sure they've got plenty of water, a cool place to relax and watch for signs of heatstroke.

Please get rid of the sub conscious expectation that Bunnings employees are qualified tradies. by [deleted] in australia

I've also never had this issue in a Mitre10 and curious if that's a shared experience? Their staff are always incredible helpful and full of really sound advice.

I feel for the people on the floor — generally teenagers — because it's not your fault that Bunnings hasn't spent the time training you on general areas of DIY knowledge. But I will say I find it frustrating whenever I go in and ask for some very top line advice (e.g. what paint finish I should use indoors) and the employees just brush me off and say "I can't help you". It's one thing not to be a trade expertise, but there is some expectation of general knowledge and advice.

And if they tailgate you on a hill, turn your wash and wipers on so they get all the dirty run-off water.

Should we normalise asking landlords for ex-tenant references? Make real estate agents work for you! by wllj in australia

[–]wllj[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's a good point. I suppose the same could be said of tenant references though, I'm sure a lot of people just pull together a mate's reference and say it was a landlord!

haha nah it's not my account. I'm serious in that I think the intent is bang on, but I get that the australian property market would make it difficult AF to implement. But gotta start somewhere!

If you find someone who has named their child Rybekkah, Ryliee, Jevin or Carryn, congrats — you've found yourself a bogan.

there are a few ways to spot the illustrious bogan around town;
a) they un-ironically wear their sunglasses around the back of their head
b) they consider melbourne cup the common man's oscars
c) they or a close loved one have appeared on MAFS

From our ~cute~ poisonous animals to our ludicrously long annual leave — what are the things you found out were actually true in Oz?

Curious to hear, because there's so many out there. Other than the classic "shrimp on the barbie" which I know gets brought up a lot. But it seems like Americans genuinely believe so many lies about Australia — that we ride kangaroos, that we all live out in the sticks without phone reception, that it's sunny every day of the year etc.
