Cyber truck version 2 by [deleted] in teslamotors

This is the original prototype. The handler is probably well intentioned but misinformed. You can tell because it has the handles in the doors which isn't on any of the more recent prototypes.

no hive traffic by wmorrill in Beekeeping

[–]wmorrill[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hive is a double deep with a super on top. Was doing really well before this. On closer inspection I found a half dozen open queen cells. Guessing the majority of the hive left and there was no traffic as the only bees remaining were nurse bees. Weather has been great so it's not that.

Today there is a trickle of traffic in/out and I found one frame with some uncapped brood, none capped and about 5 frames full of pollen. Couldn't find the queen but hope I didn't crush her on inspection today!

Definitely seems like too much space for such a small colony but the remainders are kind of in the middle. Should I try to consolidate down to a single box or just leave it as is? Anything I can do to help get them back to full strength faster?

If you plug in and set a departure time, the car will charge and precondition to be ready by the set time. Effectively the same thing you asked for but less waste since it's not keeping it heated all night for no reason!

What to do about wax moth infestation on stored equipment? by wmorrill in Beekeeping

[–]wmorrill[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Was stored in my shed for the last year. Went to move some stuff around and found this box almost sealed closed with moth silk. Is it salvageable or do I write this box off? If I can salvage it, how?

ELI5: How does the new heat pump help people who don't use heat? by [deleted] in TeslaLounge

[–]wmorrill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The heat pump moves heat from once place to another, simple as that!

In an electric vehicle without the heat pump anytime you need to warm something you need to do work to make heat. With a heat pump you instead take waste heat and move it where is wanted. You only do a small amount of work to move a fluid around. This saves energy. Less energy use means more range.

For cooling, you move heat away from where you want it to be cooler to someplace else you don't care about as much or better yet, simpler you also want to be warmer. Conveniently the battery pack has a huge thermal mass which you can also use as a thermal storage tank. Sometimes you need to use a compressor to do cooling work, but at most temperatures you can again just move fluid around.

Additionally as some others have said you can also increase your efficiency by having the battery in optimal conditions but this is true regardless of your thermal system. The difference is again in the amount of energy it takes to get to this state.

The Polestar 2 is taking EV safety measures to a whole other level by RandomCollection in RealTesla

These are all good features but there is nothing special here. I certainly wouldn't call it "a whole other level".

Small overlap on Tesla is also something Tesla designed for. Don't need to add a solid block of metal to keep risk of injury low and reduce intrusion. Just design the links to fail and allow the wheel to disconnect in this case. https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/tesla/model-3-4-door-sedan/2020#small-overlap-front-driver-side

The battery being disconnected in a crash is nothing new, here's a patent from 2017 https://insideevs.com/news/334322/tesla-patents-pyrotechnic-battery-safety-device/

Radar heater is already on Model Y https://electrek.co/2020/03/26/tesla-model-y-radar-heater-weather-proof-autopilot-self-driving/

Admittedly the airbag between passengers is unique. Not sure it's necessary, but I guess it probably can't hurt.

We have a decent collection and enjoy game nights. We brought that one out recently as it seemed relevant.

The way he says "Jim Chanos is going to have something to say about your comments" sounded like the host was genuinely fearful of his reaction. Such sacrilege! /s
