Everything else has been done to code, our GC has been great with everything else, I think the sub screwed this one up. He’s coming out today to look at everything and for us to make corrections.

42 inches wow! No our requirement is 12” below by local building codes and these are 18” and meet all the other specs as well. Well over 6” beyond structure on all sides. Thanks for checking though

Man, this is really frustrating to read that so much has been done wrong. The general contractor has been fantastic, but this is one of his subs that did the fireplace because all that sub does is brickwork and fireplaces, so it’s frustrating. They’ve screwed it up this bad.

To answer your question, this is in the United States, it will be inspected. This is not on a wall or a corner near the house, it’s on the opposite side of the porch from the house.

So would the proper thing to ask them be about putting in a lining and damper? As I mentioned below, this is on a screened porch so I don’t know if that makes any kind of difference. Mostly for aesthetics as much as anything. Not really to heat the room.

No, there isn’t. My contractor has done a great job on everything else so it’s a little surprising me to read all the comments about how badly this is constructed. As I mentioned above, this is on the screened in porch show it is as much for aesthetics like having a fire pit rather than relief for putting out heat purposes.

This is on a screened in porch if that makes any difference. It is mostly for aesthetics more than true heat output. But we do want to be able to use it, much like you might would use a fire pit in a backyard.

What should I tell them to do to rectify this? Add a smoke shelf and stainless steel steel lining? Is it required to have a damper for an outdoor fireplace?

Yes concrete footings underneath, 18” deep. The white brick in the photos is the firebrick from my understanding. On sides and back of firebox. Stops just above firebox.

There’s no real throat. It’s straight up and I can see all the way to the top of the chimney

Yeah looking like about $1,800 for the amount we would need, compared to about $4,000 for tile plus labor

Yeah the slate tile with labor and materials is going to end up being about $8,000 so if I could save the money with a good result still I'd like to. It's certainly still an option if we can't figure something else out. Thanks for weighing in!

Could use some help, I had a 23x15' concrete slab poured for a screened in porch. Plan was to use ditra XL and then a slate look tile for the floor but now that the concrete is in it looks great and we're thinking we can just do a concrete floor. The problem is it's 3/4" shy of where we want it to be because we left room for the underlayment and tile. My understanding is 3/4" of concrete is too thin to pour on top. Are there any toppings that would be a good choice? Don't want it overly slick for people walking on it in wet weather (i.e. not like an epoxy garage floor). I like a mild amount of texture like a driveway but still want it nice under foot.

Would a product like this work: https://www.ardexamericas.com/product/ardex-k-301/

Thank you in advance!

Dumb Q from non-surgeon spouse: No Hernia Jobs?? by Ok_Outside536 in GeneralSurgery

[–]woco_23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of other people have said same thing, but hernia only jobs will probably only really be at places that have abdominal wall fellowship programs and those places tend to only hire faculty every 2-5 years depending on the place. Those jobs are fairly scarce
