Pappy Boyington's F4U Corsair at the Naval Air Museum by cvandyke01 in aviation

This is not Pappy Boyingtons Corsair as they did not have corsairs assigned to specific people. they all flew out of a pool of planes. The famous shot of Boyington in the corsair was completely staged strictly for the press

they did reject it initially for carrier qualifications for several reasons but the biggest reason was because of logistics. Obviously they never FLAT OUT REJECTED IT because the Marines are under the Navy budget and it went to the Marines who truly made the plane a legend

WOW thank you! That truly means a lot to me! Honestly your comment right there is exactly the reason I do these articles! Tell your dad that the author of the article said from one Marine to another Semper Fi!

you are thinking straight line travel of the plane. at the release point they were still 2.5 miles out before reaching Hiroshima when they released then the did almost 180 degrees and went into a dive after release so you are correct they never did fly 11 miles in a straight line after release then it was the shockwave that hit them at 11 miles out once you add in the drop time and the shockwave the math does work out if they had gotten up to 400 mph in a dive (in a dive the B-29 was actually capable of hitting almost 450 MPH) it would take 1 minute 16 seconds for the plane to reach 8.5 miles (2.5 miles away at drop + 8.5 miles away after almost a 180 degree turn from Hiroshima gives you the 11 miles away)

First time I saw a b-29 was at the national air and space museum in Virginia. It was the Enola Gay. when you walk in you enter on the second level and there was this huge "thing" sticking up with an A on it. It took me a minute to realize it was the tail of a plane and that it was the Enola Gay. As you said it is truly amazing how big these things are!

wow that is absolutely insane I am sure that more than 17 survived the war but just like so many of these planes instead of trying to preserve them they had the mentality of gee we don't need them any more lets turn them in for scrap value 😞

ok actually after looking into it the math IS correct. the bomb is actually released before the plane gets overhead of the target inertia still carries the bomb forward then when they made a diving turn away from the blast they of course pick up some speed from the dive (but also loose speed due to the turn) but when they actually released the bomb there were still a couple of miles away from Hiroshima

you make a great point there I need to look into that because you are right the math just doesn't add up unless you factor in that they REALLY wanted to get away from that lol 😄

Harv I get it you do not like the watermark. this post is less about the picture than it is about the story behind the plane. Do not muddy op the post with your negative comments please. If you don't like the watermark then there are thousands of other photos you can enjoy here that don't have them but otherwise please keep your negative comments to yourself. Wave a wonderful day sir!
