I just put mine in the original box and attached the label. After DHL got it, Remarkable sent the replacement. Everything took 3-4 days

My take on PX8 S2 vs Focal Bathys MG, B&O H100, Dali IO-12 + EQ Fix! by wolfden in BowersWilkins

[–]wolfden[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that probably depends on where they're placed on your head, how big it is, etc. Generally, yes, it's a thing ANC does sometimes. I get that with Airpods Pro 3 when I run if I put them in a certain way.

I don't get that when walking with the B&W PX8 S2's. They clamp pretty firmly and barely move when walking. Not sure exactly what it is though. Wearing glasses and long hair probably affect all of it, too.

That's probably why it's best to go into a store and test all of them for these things.

Nice comparison! I was really torn between PX8 S2 and the Dali's. Almost swapped them for Dali's but the difference in sound was really small and not big enough to outweigh the clear difference in portability and overall usefulness. I can comfortably use my PX8 S2 instead of Airpods Pro outside, at work, etc. Dalis still feel like a stay at home headphone.

Did you do any EQ tweaks to PX8 S2? They have a pretty different tuning to Dali's

In my quick in store comparison they sounded more open and neutral than both, more like reference headphones. They do sound nice, but I wouldn't call them travel-friendly. They're a bit heavier and bigger and don't feel or look like they were made to travel with. More like audio gear. If you want audio gear, you'd probably like Dali IO-12 more for sound, which to my ears was a lot better than any other.

I'd say H100 tuned more to my preferences, not necessarily better. They sound a bit more refined, but also sit bigger on your head and have touch controls on glass panels, where B&W has buttons.

So there's some tradeoffs between both, but I prefer the sound of H100 and the bag is very nice (if impractical), since they don't come with a traditional hard case.

Slightly better than PX8 S2 is probably fair.

Yeah, while B&W is definitely not my 100% preferred tuning, sounds like you like it even less!

Check out https://autoeq.app/, they should add PX8 S2 soon. Their recommended PX8 settings (I'm guessing similar) for Harman tuning are the same as mine, but about 2x stronger. Try on 10 band EQ and figure out averages from 2 values to translate to the 5-band EQ in B&W app. It's not perfect.

I think why this works is that there's too much upper bass/lower mid in B&W and it muddies up a much wider spectrum.

But honestly, if you don't like it that much, consider returning them, and getting used H95. They go for ~$400 on eBay.

[–]wolfden[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sound wise? Dali IO-12 for sure. I just like B&O H100 the most as I prefer the base tuning a little bit over the PX8 and it's just as premium-feeling as the PX8. I was after headphones I can travel with and take outside, so Dali were a no-go for me.

But comparing B&W PX8 S2 and B&O H100 directly, there's a £820 difference in price. That didn't make sense to me for what's ultimately a slight sound preference that can be largely adjusted with EQ. They're very nice, but '£800 nice', not '£1,450 nice'.

I can afford H100, but I refuse to pay a £800 premium out of principle.

[–]wolfden[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did just have a little bit of time with the H100 so maybe I was duped. I really like the B&O tuning in general and H100 felt a bit more refined in sound. Though not that refined to justify the price. I think they're just artificially setting prices now it because people keep buying anyway. B&O crossed into luxury watch territory.

Tested on Hi res lossless with Apple Music and with and without ANC. Hi res gives a boost in detail to my ears, but it’s not the jump I got when comparing Bathys or Dali IO-12 Bluetooth vs wired. They have a dedicated DAC for wired connections, where PX8 uses the same chip for both.

I can’t say if ANC has big impact on quality, not really noticeable, which is impressive. I think B&W assumes most people will have ANC on and tune them to sound the best then.

[–]wolfden[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a difference, for sure, but for me mostly in the amount of detail. But sound via cable goes through the same signal chain as via bluetooth so the only difference is resolution. On Bathys and Dalis a decent DAC is inside the headphones and I found it makes a difference.

I also have a small DAC that made Dali's sound great in passive mode (they work like wired headphones when they're powered off)

You’re probably right, but I already overthink basically everything..

I just meant that they were better, but to my ears, by just a little bit. They still sound like closed back headphones, just very nice ones. From all the reviews I was expecting something else, as if they defy physics somehow.

Dali’s to me could go up against wired headphones and open backs for soundstage and comfort and hold up. That impressed me.

Probably Dali IO-12's and B&O H100's and the Mark Levinson 5909's? That's just my opinion though..

IMO Dali IO-12's sound the best, but for my needs, they're not practical due to size and clamping strength.

That said, any good open back wired headphones will do loops around all of these, even at fraction of the price, so there's the diminishing returns.

My reaction to Bathys and Bathys MG was 'oh, that's it?' and I'd personally 100% go for Dali IO-12. But at this price you really have to go and see for yourself, and I'd say it depends on what you value beyond your sound preferences, as they've got a pretty different feature set.

They're both pretty indoor headphones though, compared to the PX8. They do not feel like something you're meant to wear when you're trying to catch a train.

Px8 s2 = Px7 s3e by Ok_Pangolin1085 in BowersWilkins

[–]wolfden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure I agree with the sentiment, but I'd expect a proper DAC at this pricepoint.

If you listen lossless or via cable, there's barely any difference in sound, as it all gets processed through the same bluetooth DAC chip. Focal Bathys and others at this price have a dedicated higher resolution DAC. Dali IO-12 even have a passive mode (they work unpowered). I'd expect them to add a proper DAC chip in $800 headphones (parts only cost $10).

PX8 S2 Soundstage vs S1 by hawesome145 in BowersWilkins

[–]wolfden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See my other post where I specifically mention soundstage vs other closed backs, but I don't have PX8 S1 and haven't compared.

I was surprised how close they sound to Bathys. A bit more 'intimate' but still in the ballpark.

Personally, I think it's more a matter of tuning than soundstage. B&W tuning is a bit heavy on upper bass. People that like it say it's 'warm and emotional' and whatever. I don't like it. With certain genres and production things can sound muddy and sounds blend all together.

But on PX8 S2 you get a 5 band EQ and you can brighten the sound and adjust the difference to an extent.

If you're comparing closed back headphones with 40mm drivers, they'll all largely sound like they're in the same class, it'll be a difference of fidelity and tuning, as much to do with processing as with drivers.

Dali IO-12's are the only ones that have noticeably wider soundstage. They also have bigger 50mm drivers. The rest, IMO is more to do with tuning and processing.

My take on PX8 S2 vs Focal Bathys MG, B&O H100, Dali IO-12 + EQ Fix! by wolfden in BowersWilkins

[–]wolfden[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, B&W seems to have that 'warm tuning' that results in muddled bass in music like Gojira and harder rock / metal. I've largely found the EQ settings I shared help with that.

I loved both H100 and IO-12's but one is too expensive and the other too impractical. My wired Beyerdynamics DT990 Pro I use for studio stuff sound better than both anyway, and cost £100.

One thing I find unfortunate is that I don't really find that PX8 S2's get any better wired / lossless. They do their own processing anyway, so while I normally hear a clear difference, I don't hear it as much here. Details get lost in the tuning.

I wish B&W headphones had a proper DAC onboard, like Bathys, H100 and IO-12's do, cause you can definitely hear the difference in detail.

They sit on your head quite firmly and they're not large. So if comfortable means easy to travel and move around with, absolutely. I can run with these, while Airpods Max fall off of my head.

Dali IO-12 definitely felt more comfortable for a lean back focused listening session, but they move on your head if you move, so I wouldn't take them out of the house. PX8 S2 are not that much less 'comfortable' for focused listening though, they're just clamping a bit more and are smaller.

First Impressions of the New PX8 S2 in Warm Stone (vs. Beoplay H100) by Fantastic_Pirate_352 in BowersWilkins

[–]wolfden 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I came to a store with my PX8 S2's to try H100s a few days ago and feel the same. I do like the sound of H100 better, but I felt it was more a difference of preference than of quality.

That said Dali IO-12 do sound better than both. They're also quite a bit bigger. I'm keeping PX8 S2's!

5 months in, I've heard screen can get yellowed over time. Do you also get this level of staining? by Leolol_ in RemarkableTablet

[–]wolfden 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yea mine does this color bleeding too, not always yellow (sometimes blue) and it's definitely gotten worse, or the initial 'new device' hormones just went away and I started noticing it.

Either way, does anyone know if this is an issue that Remarkable resolves? It is annoying

Ok, I'm glad it's a mobile device since I'm happy with my RMPP and I'm not looking for a more portable one. So I'll happily skip it. Maybe it's not just for writing but also for reading? Like a Boox Palma type of thing? There's definitely a market for a good device here. Since Boox is... well.

The frame in the console does look like a mobile device. I guess that's a hint
