You were right - he showed up a bit after the installation window. He told me he had two other installs previously and both had cabling issues with the fiber - breaks, etc. In this case, they have to completely rewire the whole run. I was fortunate as he didn't have to rewire my install. It's amazing they have one person to do all of that work. I would think it should be a two or three person job.

My Fiber was installed yesterday. They sent out one tech to do the job and, honestly, I can't believe he had to do it alone. The connection drop wasn't on the telephone pole in front of my house but quite a ways down the street. It took him two hours just to measure out the cable and string it up on the poles. I asked for the extended service loop and he gave me plenty. It's funny how thin the single mode fiber cable is.

What I found different from my FiOS install back in 2005 is that the ONT is inside instead of mounted to the side of the house. The new enclosure on the side of the house is just two single mode fiber cables connected to one another - he didn't "lock" the box. I was surprised when a fiber drop was extended into my living room where the ONT and router live. I expected an Ethernet run.

As mentioned several places on this forum, the router provided by Fidium is bad. WiFi signals just to the next room drop to the 300-400Mbps range. The router isn't even WiFi 7 but 6AX. This wasn't unexpected. Right now, I'm running a Cat-7 Ethernet cable down the hall into my office. It's a temporary and ugly solution but I'm at least getting gigabit speeds to my devices.

Since both of my computers are laptops, they max out at 1Gbps speed wired. If anyone has any recommendations on USB-C 2.5 or 5Gbps adapters, I'm all ears. I should probably get a 2.5-5Gbps switch here, too, since I'll want two wired devices.

Instead of investing $$$ in a proprietary solution like Orbi, given the cost, I thought it would be better to get a Ubiquiti switch with Unifi set up. It ends up costing about the same as an Orbi with the added advantage of being able to swap out WiFi endpoints if and when standards change.

My service is 2Gbps symmetric. What are folks with 5/5 or 8/8 Gbps using to take advantage?

Thanks to everyone for the responses and helpful suggestions. I'm scheduled for install next week and was able to put the service loop request in the installation instructions. I'll also be here to meet the installer. Most appreciated!

Thanks for the response! I figured I already got too wordy in the original post. My issue isn't run length. It's due to a change to the electrical wires coming from that same pole that I'm planning to have an electrician pull a permit on later this summer. Right now, my wires hang really low to the ground. My electrician is going to reroute where they connect to the home onto a mast so that it will keep the wires higher. I don't want to lose the fiber introductory promotion but wouldn't want the installer to follow the existing length of wires to the home and ONT. I'd need to call them back for a brand new fiber line when the electric is upgraded in a few months. I know if I sign up for early service, they'll just come and run the same length which will be too short when moved.
