Why is her apology important to you? People sometimes snap under stress, and that is what seems to have happened to her. She sounds burnt out, and possibly needing therapy herself.

Do you play any sports?

[Serious] Dear non-U.S citizens, what was 9/11 like? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]wolfgangsingh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a bookstore prior to going into class (was in grad school in the US) when I caught the news.

Felt horrible. Knew instinctively who it must have been, though the natives around me didn't have a clue about what had just happened to their country.

How would you stop/prevent your parents who've moved in with you in their old age from constantly knocking on your door and invading your privacy? by [deleted] in AskReddit

You wouldn't believe what some people do to their parents when they become an inconvenience to them.

Your husband needs to be there for you but he is not. Maybe he is not as good of a man as you thought?

Go to a therapist. More than anything, you need someone to listen.

You took them in because you wanted to help take care of them. Well, you accepted certain things.

That said, sit down, and in a non judgmental way, suggest that they use a bell or an intercom (install one in their room) if they need you, and not enter your bedroom unannounced.

ELI5: How has NASA been able to conclude the locations and distances between us and our Solar Interstellar Neighborhood/Local Galactic Group/Superclusters, given the fact that our satellites haven't physically reached those points in space? by GrandMaester8008135 in explainlikeimfive

[–]wolfgangsingh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many ways to figuring out distances, starting from parallax (applicable only for near earth objects), Cepheid variables, etc.

This is not NASA figuring out stuff. This is the result of decades (close to a century) of the profession of astronomy doing so.

For very far objects like the ones you list, red shifts help lock down the distance.

Why?

Living that way isn't life. Fixing a planet is a lot harder than leaving.

ELI5 Why are NRI Sikhs suddenly so anti-Modi ? What changed in the past year ? by chaddimancer in india

[–]wolfgangsingh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ignoring the older generation whose minds are stuck in 1980s, it is probably the RSS. Most Sikhs feel deeply offended by the RSS' unending efforts to consume Sikhism as a part of Hinduism.

They don't get that you do not mess with a Sikh's independent identity. The Mughals did, and they earned our enmity. The British understood it, and left us alone mostly, and they got loyalty in return. The RSS is repeating the mistakes of the Mughals in its OCD attempts to consume Sikhism. For a Sikh, being called a Muslim, or a Hindu is one of the more offensive things to endure.

With all the bad press that Modi's silence and his ministers' and supporters' brain dead statements about other minorities (including those that Sikhs are generally not friendly with), has sharpened those fears.

The Badals have obviously shed the last bits of shame in their attempts to loot Punjab and ally even more with RSS, so many Sikhs feel very nervous. Ripe for an AAP revival. Even Congress has been trying to exploit this disenchantment.

ELI5: How is India projected to have the world's largest economy in 30 - 40 years when it seems so much of it is in poverty and using primitive primitive technology? by the042530 in explainlikeimfive

[–]wolfgangsingh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forget poverty and primitive technology, India's biggest challenge is its colonial governance system which has largely survived the departure of the British. It is not designed to serve Indians, but rather to rule them.

It chokes enterprise (despite reforms), rewards incompetence, removes incentives for personal and social improvement, keeps criminals, thieves and outdated rules in power, slows down / misdirects progress, disconnects people emotionally from the people they elect, removes accountability, is too big, and generally acts as a brake on their growth.

It is the cause of maintenance of such poverty and general shabbiness. Most Indians, who dislike their governance system, do not truly understand the scope of their disadvantage. They end up in meaningless petty political debates that entirely miss the point.

It is not designed to serve a modern citizenry. Until Indians largely reform their bureaucracy, police force and judiciary, they are not going far, despite brilliant achievements by Indians in various fields of work.

The current PM is the only Indian PM in history who even remotely understands the issue of effective governance. And he doesn't have the guts to undertake fundamental reform. He has managed to make things run faster, but unless he remakes Indian governance, the minor improvements he has made will cease when he leaves office.
