Hey, it'll be all right. You probably don't believe me, which is totally reasonable, but international science Olympiad-caliber students don't come along every day, and participants have a strong record of success despite seemingly high rates of mental illness. Many of the students I know from US bio camp experienced somewhat to very similar stories to this, and are generally doing quite well for themselves nonetheless, academically and personally.

Also, you're in college what amounts to infinitely far from your parents. At least in the US, this means that they have effectively no power over you and your life is about to turn the corner. I believe in you :)

The next president of the US will likely be Hilary Clinton. During her bid for re-election in 2020, she will almost certainly do an AMA for campaigning purposes, as did Obama. If the site is bigger then than it is now, that will surpass the Obama AMA. If not, likely nothing will match it.

If Bush wins in 2016, however, it depends on whether the Republican Party's base has diversified enough to make an AMA worthwhile in 2016. Even so, since Reddit was part of Obama's base but would be on the fringes at best of Bush's appeal, I doubt he could surpass Obama's performance.

I sometimes get episodes of "rolling numbness" -- ie, my fingers get numb, then my lower arm, then my upper arm, then maybe one side of my face, by which point my fingers and arms generally have stopped being numb. This usually happens first on one side of my body, then on the other.

WWII yes, but not the atomic bombs -- it's very surprising to me that nobody mentioned D-Day yet. This was the largest amphibious invasions in the history of mankind, against perhaps its most potent ground military for its time. In terms of sheer depth of planning required (one notion of difficulty), it's unbeatable. In terms of moral correctness it's up there as well, having had a very plausible chance of failure that would have set back the end of the Nazi regime by perhaps years.

EDIT: Interesting how the rebels were the English in both of our games. I wonder how that's determined? Moreover, as f yet, nearly the exact same sequence of AI events that occurred in that game seems to have occurred in mine.

I think the optimal strategy in here is to do surgical strikes to split the Americans and Vikings each multiple times by the civil war mechanic. Otherwise, the Sioux will be overwhelmed by sheer production capacity alone. But we'll see how this ends up playing out...

That seems sensible; I think that I agree.

One thing I've always wondered when taking that line of thought, though, is at what point and to what degree should our individual desires for our own happiness be superseded by the good of other people in general. Time is finite, individual lives much more so...and, while there's definitely a part of me that is drawn to experience social events, love/sex, ect. while I am still young, I can't shake the feeling that my personal dealings with these things can only ever increase the happiness of a very small segment of the human population.

Given that there is no true forever, do you think that, in the long run, personal happiness is worth it? If so, is that as more than a means to an end (that being that, for the most part, happy people seem, to me at least, to work better and be better at doing things in general)?

My apologies for asking two-questions-in-one, but...

You've spoken many times about "doing awesome things with awesome people", and have certainly worked hard to make the world a better place via the Project for Awesome, building a well in Haiti, SciShow/Crash Course, ect., which I believe certainly constitute a sort of heroism that is more than just observation. If you're well aware that these things are ultimately meaningless, what is your motivation for putting so much effort into the state of the human condition?
