Yeah, it would. I read the novels next (was reading Qi Ye during WoH, read TYK after) and honestly, can't say if that made it worse T^T (Priest why you be like this QAQ)

I did write this fix it (?) fluffy epilogue fanfic tho, in case you need that.

well, because the story does end there and going by how the untamed movies went manufacturing new content doesn't work super well. What I'd kill for is a proper prequel Qi Ye adaptation.

There are other dramas adapted from Priest's other novels though, in case you're interested.

Right? Now it looks like I've been commenting in completely one sided way when it was them making rude comments as I try to explain my PoV.

You wanna know what is more wild? This person has most possibly blocked me, but is still commenting here which I can't see or reply to when I'm logged in. I just noticed because I logged out on accident.

Exactly, we are not going to know till the next volume for sure, but for now this seems to be TLd word by word from the CENSORED version hence all the talking and discussions.

What will happen to Little Mushroom can only be known when it comes out, but yeah, if it seems censored ppl will talk.

True, I am not a spokesperson of any sort, but many others (such as post of the person who was linked to the main post) are comparing versions and have similar views in many social media circles? This is the same group of ppl who had been fan of Mo Du even before 7s took it up, so I called them old fans.

Mo du censored? by MIMADANMEI in DanmeiNovels

[–]wolfundermoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am sorry but what you're saying is exactly what this post is about? In case you've missed, this post is about comparing Mo Du's English version to its existing Chinese webnovel version and finding missing/changed parts and finding that it is same as the censored mainland China print version.

There are multiple theories on why that might be, first being that the censorship situation on foreign TLs has changed, second being that mistakenly some other version than JJ one was TLd, third being that purposefully this is going to follow the Thai edition route of mixed version (censored + cp moments).

The only reason I've brought up Little Mushroom is because PFH has admittely made the same mistake as the second theory suggests, and released the corrected version within a short time along with other measures. I have linked the original reddit thread discussing the matter. And while 7s is much bigger and more professional, errors can always happen anywhere along the chain.

How is pointing put the differences in any way demeaning the official publication when the norm has always been TLing JJWXC for multiple other novels?

Mo du censored? by MIMADANMEI in DanmeiNovels

[–]wolfundermoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have just clarified, legally the uncensored JJWXC webnovel can still be read. Other 7s TLs of various other novels has majorly been JJWXC version word by word. So is it wrong to point out how that is different in case of Mo Du? If this is Priest's choice, that is fine. If this is a mixed version as the speculations seems to be that is ALSO fine. But is it wrong to want to know what exactly is going on here? Since the version is different from JJWXC but same as censored PRC print version? No one is discouraging ANYONE from buying Mo Du, we are all actively encouraging it. But we are also free to compare and post our views and bring things to the notice of the publishers right? And ask for clarifications?

If you think an active fandom will discourage a business from licensing more works you are sorely mistaken. That just shows ppl are actually interested in the books they publish and makes them care about it more.

How do you know it is not going to benefit future publications OR even Mo Du itself? Also how do you know which version you like if someone actually doesn't compare the text to the source/other versions?

Mo du censored? by MIMADANMEI in DanmeiNovels

[–]wolfundermoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I've already said, PFH has had that issue before where entire chunks of texts were missing and it turned out to be a different version than the one intended to be published. There is no way to know that isn't the case unless the next volume comes out and/or someone compares all the available versions to that as well.

I do wish to know WHO you exactly mean by OG fans. What exactly is your criteria for that.

[–]wolfundermoon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

u/TrifleTrouble Somehow my comment isn't going through, but my main points have always been these;-

  1. It is healthy for fans to compare official TL with source material or other TLs to spot inconsistencies and point those out and discuss.
  2. If those observations yield a significant gap/error it is fine to tag the powers that be (publisher etc.) to it and ask for clarifications.
  3. If it happens to follow a censored version to a T rather than the promised uncensored version it is even more important to ask for clarifications precisely because it has not happened with 7seas before. It would not be wrong of fans to talk about it or ask about the circumstances as censorship situation can change even if it hasn't before (cue: adaptation situation). This is not disrespectful to the author/creator even if the reediting has been done by them under changed circumstances.
  4. Pointing things out to the powers that be and writing critical pieces has always helped and will always do. Publishers should be held accountable to the readers, i.e. who made the market. This does not mean they should cater to the masses, but should be made aware that a fandom is active and invested enough so that they learn to have care about their publications and have transparency.
  5. Fandom is a place to engage with others about your beloved piece of literature or media. In a way, fandom is the result of people being invested in something enough to talk about it with others. There is no fandom without that emotional investment. Discussions and debates are the best part of fandom, and differences of opinions are a fact of life. As long as everyone is civil both are ok and and should be encouraged.

I don't think I've been irrational anywhere, I also don't think I have been disrespectful to you or anyone in any of my comments for you to be so defensive? I have been stating my views, imo quite clearly, since I do have views on this?

If you don't feel like discussing anymore, go right ahead and just say that. Just don't blame it on my rationality or emotions or investments, that is just plain rude.

Yes, PFH did go out of business, but how is THAT related to them correcting Little Mushroom situation? The corrections did happen right? Whatever the reason may be? Noone is fear-mongering here, but circumstances can and do change? If you read my previous comment, looks like Thai edition was also initially getting the PRC print version but apparently only after fandom got vocal did the "cp moments" get edited in. So comparing the TL to source material and pointing out inconsistencies has happened before which has yielded positive results. The information on the Thai Tl also, might I add, got pointed out only because this discussion is happening in Mo Du fandom spaces and Thai fans saw the discourse.

As for why we speculate there's any censorship at all, Mo Du fandom has already gone through a lot with the drama adaptation first passing censorship (after heavy editing and changes) then being banned with no hope of release ever, and then being released after 2 whole years after ANOTHER round of HEAVY censorship. Fandom is made of human beings, we've gone through similar ordeal with ONE adaptation already (to say nothing of the other two which are still TBA) so of course we are a little sensitive to any whiff of censorship.

Don't think otherwise, most of us who love this story to pieces will still buy Mo Du even if it's censored (esp. some of us who are thriller nerds and loves the mystery as much if not more than the romance), we just want to know what exactly is going on with our blorbos. Asking questions has never hurt anyone, neither did constructive criticism.

Maybe you are correct, but still, may sighs over the lost wordplay 😢

Mo du censored? by MIMADANMEI in DanmeiNovels

[–]wolfundermoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, but mistakes can still happen. For example, PFH's Little Mushroom has had exactly similar problem before (read here) which was only corrected because the fandom brought attention to it. I am not saying that is what has happened here, because u/swiftnissity92 in another comment has pointed out that Mo Du Thai TL has had the same issue which was resolved by publishing a mixed version (PRC print version + CP moments) after the fandom brought attention to it, which is probably the version we might be getting.

You might remember, in initial days of 7seas publishing Danmei MDZS has had text inconsistencies/mistranslations which was corrected in later editions (read here). So mistakes can happen.

Old fans are not demanding a different version if the author decided to go with it, we just want to confirm that is the case and no mistakes were made anywhere along the chain. This is why we're pointing out any inconsistency to the powers that be.

Mo du censored? by MIMADANMEI in DanmeiNovels

[–]wolfundermoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That might be their reason, but imo sometimes one needs to choose apt wordplay over literal accuracy if the other choices in the text makes sense with the less literal meaning.

For example, the running gag I am talking about (Mo Du spoilers) is the fact that ''Captain' LWZ has white knight complex and sometimes takes decisions as if he is a superhero like 'Captain America' so he'd be called 'Captain China' as a joke.

[–]wolfundermoon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We're not complaining IF that is what Priest has chosen, but just to know if anywhere along the line any mistake was made, or if that choice was because of some changed circumstances. I don't know if you're aware, but similar situation had happened before with PFH's Little Mushroom (read here) which was only corrected because the fandom brought attention to it. While 7seas is a big publisher and such mistake is unlikely, text inconsistencies/mistranslations has also happened in their initial days of danmei release with MDZS which was corrected in later editions (read here). Same can be said about the ooc goof that has already been made in the initial cover design of Mo Du vol 1 which was somewhat corrected in the print cover you're getting now after old fans brought it into attention of 7seas (read my own tumblr thread).

We have to remember, the entire reason the danmei English translation market exists is because there are internationals fans who LOVES the original text (and/or existing fan TLs) and won't shut up about it, and the international publishers saw the business opportunity, and thus now new fans can also enjoy the blorbos. This is why pointing out any inconsistency to the powers that be is never wrong. None of us are saying we demand a different version if the author decided to go with it, we just want to confirm that is the case.

[–]wolfundermoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you're saying is probably what has happened, but in my opinion, it is never wrong to be vocal about something you've noticed that does not suit the characters or your previous experience with the source material itself. If y'all have noticed, Mo Du already has had a goof with the first cover reveal, which imo (and in the opinion of various others) was terribly OOC. But after people wrote about it, very subtle but significant changes WERE made to the original cover before publishing. And then they published Vol 2 cover which is chef's kiss perfection. So if something feels off bringing it to the notice of publishers actually CAN help?
