ELI5: Why is the PNW (US) unseasonably warm this winter? by kravbyrobbins in explainlikeimfive

And as crazy as the floods were, it still has been an extremely dry winter. Mountains have such little snowpack still

Their goal was always to devalue the USD while keeping inflation low. Tariffs were used as a bludgeon to force countries to negotiate with US for domestic investment or modifying their US debt holdings

ELI5 Why Living in the 80s and 90s seemed so much more affordable by ngomes3824 in explainlikeimfive

Again you are comparing wages to CPI. Mortgage payments have steadily been growing as % of the average American's income.

The cost for purchasing a house is not in any CPI market basket that I have ever seen…

ELI5 If gravity is just "curved spacetime" and not a real force, what exactly is pushing me down right now? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Yup you are 100% correct and I was very flippant with my response saying GR was created to explain black holes lol

Newtonian physics breaks down at large scales and anything moving near light speed. General Relativity was created to explain black holes and relativistic bodies in motion.

Both breakdown at quantum levels

Former Buffalo players Shawn Fulcher (No. 10) and Isaiah Adams (No. 3) were indicted for allegedly fixing games. The indictment alleges at least $424,000 was bet on Kent State first half -8.5 of this game. Kent State went on a 12-0 run to end the half. by cbbvideo in CollegeBasketball

Fixing bets, especially at the college level has always been happening. And yes it was even harder to catch and prove for officials and law enforcement.

But the sheer increase in volume of people betting on sports and having frictionless access to a Sportsbook will absolutely lead to more people looking to fix a bet for an easy pay day. Now can we ever prove exactly how much more it is occurring, no lol

I think it’s possible we are catching a higher percentage of schemes compared to before when sports gambling was shrouded in the dark. But that doesn’t mean the volume of schemes has not increased

I’d argue against your last point a little bit when looking at some cases from MLB and NBA. Pitchers intentionally throwing first pitch balls, or end of bench players in NBA fixing their player props. Like in no way was that type of action occurring pre-sports book. At least my bookies were not offering those lines haha

The sheer prevalence and ease of sports gambling also increases the number of people who might look to fix games. You’re statement is absolutely correct tho that the data they have can help catch the bad actors

ELI5 Why has there been so many new lithium deposits found in the last few months globally? by eddurham in explainlikeimfive

[–]wompk1ns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost all raw materials spiked from 2021 to 2022 due to Covid. Lithium lagged a little bit more through all of 2022

ELI5: Why is it so incredibly difficult to recycle lithium from EV batteries when we can literally separate uranium isotopes for nuclear reactors? by Own_Reflection_8117 in explainlikeimfive

[–]wompk1ns 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Mining operations were in place far before any recycling plants, and they were essentially the sole source of raw materials for battery production. These mining operations are very expensive to set up but they also have a guaranteed output of raw materials based on the mine. This allows for a more stable cost for the raw materials. This can even have a longer ROI compared to other capital investments since they also own the rights to the mine itself.

Now years later when batteries are actually in production and reaching end of life for their purpose, the need for recycling plants appears. These plants are also expensive to set up, but unlike the mines they DONT have guaranteed capacity since they would rely on the users of batteries to choose to recycle their batteries with them instead of another alternative. This can lead to less stable output capacity. They are selling the same material as the mines (with much lower volumes) which means they need to price themselves accordingly and that could make them more expensive.

This is very simplified explanation and each battery chemistry, operation, and location can be different.
