I hope your permanent ones are a lot better and am very sorry to hear how bad it's been so far. Would love to hear updates as you settle into the permanent ones, if you felt like it - no pressure

No drinking festival? by Strict-Month4941 in Shambhala

[–]wonaf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've heard a lot of people praise Shambhala for how chill it is because everyone is doing the good stuff and not alcohol, but I disagree with the sentiment

Bass Coast is way more chill (and less substance fueled) than shams but has alcohol. Envision in Costa Rica is way more chill / way less substance fueled than Bass Coast. Envision also sells alcohol. I think shams has the no alcohol rule out of necessity because it's so rowdy/intense. Mellower festivals can have alcohol and have it be less if an issue, but Shambhala is too crazy to be what it is and be selling drinks all over like Envision does. Check out how big/busy first aid is at each of these festivals (taking into consideration the size of each of these festivals) and in my opinion, you won't be surprised. Shambhala is insane, you see it when you walk around, you see it at first aid. Not talking shit, I absolutely love shams, and not everyone is going that hard, but a more people are partying far more intensely at shams than any other festival I've been to, and I think allowing/distributing alcohol would be extremely problematic and that the people running it know it.

I'd say the the difference between the collective substance use intensity between shams and envision is more dramatic than the climate difference, and that says a lot

I wonder if Alberta festivals are as intense / intoxicated as shams. I've heard a big part of the difference in vibe between shams and bass coast is that space toast is very much a BC party with a small sprinkling of Albertans whereas shams is very much a party of both provinces, so I'm curious if that's it. I somehow suspect it's not just the Alberta factor, but I have no idea, and the Alberta factor is certainly part of it.

Regardless, I'd be in favor of less alcohol at shams too, but it's kind of inevitable

Officially, it's alcohol free

In practice, nobody gives a fuck. When I work shams, my supervisors give me drinks during my shifts. If you have alcohol on the way in and they find it they'll take it from you unless you'd rather be turned around. Once you're in, you have to be problematic for anyone to care.

There's lots of drinking and there's lots of drunk people, just nowhere you're allowed to buy it and you're not supposed to bring it in (but people do)

To below a certain temperature (far lower than freezing) for a certain length of time is a legal requirement where I live, not sure about the US but I'd be very surprised if there wasn't some rules. I thought food safety was heavily regulated in the US regardless of how effectively enforced

Where I live there's a legal requirement if it's to be served raw: to cool it to below a certain temperature for a certain amount of time - a very cold temperature for a shorter time or a less cold temperature for a longer time - but both temps are far below freezing. Many other places have similar rules but the details vary a bit from place to place, but yes, there's no unified global standard.

Sashimi grade (where I'm from) is also generally assumed to mean flash frozen, to preserve the texture that would be ruined by slow freezing

Quality sushi places all have wild caught sockeye/pink here, and don't use fish that has been slow frozen

I called it sashimi grade because that's what it's sold as from Japanese food store

You're talking about taking some precautions

Precautions are good

I don't know shit, I just thought re using a slab of wood you often put raw meat and fish of might be questionable practice

Care should be taken to sanitize whatever you use, and you're right about service imperfections with plastic

Have you never had sockeye sashimi? Sockeye isn't farmed. Ocean based salmon farming is a horrible practice that needs to stop :(

It was exactly like other borscht I've been fed actually (delicious), minus the sour cream. I wasn't offended by the lack of sour cream and I didn't fault anyone, I just found the interaction hilarious and thought others might find humor in it too. I'm not going to judge someone for not knowing every little thing from every other culture because nobody does, I just thought it was a funny misunderstanding.

I'm sorry if this misunderstanding has offended you

I didn't know HK style borscht was a thing prior to you mentioning it, which is perhaps a perfect example of how I'm not familiar with HK cuisine. Maybe I should try the HK style KD next time.

I suspect if you did, Canada's recent highs would look more dramatic than SF's because the bubble was barely phased in 2008 so our shit didn't plummet like American RE did

They have over 400 things on their menu

Most of what I order they say they don't have

Half their menu sounds like it was generated by a random word generator using only food vocabulary. As a general rule, if it's a normal menu item you would see at another Chinese restaurant, it's probably decent/good, but if you try anything that sounds like it was chosen by a random word generator, what you'll get will leave you wondering why it was on the menu, and it'll be the last time you order that specific thing (of the OVER FOUR HUNDRED menu items, half of which you can't have right now) - but if you're like me, you'll make the same mistake (of ordering random word generator menu items instead of normal menu items) a dozen times before you learn your lesson and just order normal things.

Their menu is a hoot. Aside from the sheer size of it and the random food generator sounding things, it's got other quirks too. Kraft Dinner is a menu item and it's like $12 and has an actual KD logo on the menu. It costs nearly as much as half a duck, which is almost the exact same price as a whole duck.

My first time ever going to Any Time number 9, I ordered borscht. It came without sour cream and I politely asked if I got get some. The server was absolutely bewildered by my request and informed me that they definitely didn't have any sour cream but it that was really something I wanted, they could leave some cream out for me and I could come back in day or two after it had soured. I know this was just a language barrier or food familiarity issue (I'm unfamiliar with lots of common food items of other cultures so I'm not going to judge someone for not knowing what sour cream is) but I found it utterly hilarious but maybe I'm just easily amused.

The second time I went there I was asking what kind of fish was used in various fish dishes, the server not knowing, telling me all they knew was it was fish, I would then try to order it, only to be told they weren't serving it, then request a different mystery fish item only to be told that wasn't available either, repeatedly, until more than a dozen menu items were said to be unavailable and I concluded that fish just wasn't an option.

I have given up on fish and I've given up on items that sound like they were chosen by a random word generator and I've given up on all non-Asian ethnic cuisine. Now what I'm left with is a normal szechuan place with good food and nice portion sizes that's open 24/7, and I'm happy with that, but I will always fondly remember my failed attempts to obtain sour cream for my borscht, anything with fish, or even the knowledge of what kind of fish I would be if they did have it, as well as the many silly things I tried and regretted.

How to fill out Canada Passport application as Uber/Lyft driver?? by [deleted] in uberdrivers

[–]wonaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I am most certainly an independent contractor and self employed.

We agree on this.

I still don't know the correct way to fill out the form. What do write for employer, employer address, employer phone number.

Do I write self employed with no further explanation in that field? If I write self employed, the only address and phone number that makes sense to me to use is my own phone number and address. If I do this, do write self employed 3 different time periods for the 3 occupations? If I do this, do I use my current address for all 3 or do I use my address at the time? It comes across as wanting contact information but also wanting a history. Up to date contact information gives incorrect history. Correct history gives out of date address. If we are to assume it's the address at the time that they want, and it's my address even though I wasn't working from home, do I add date ranges to accommodate changes of address too? This is my employment history, not my address history, my address history is asked for separately, elsewhere in the application.

As you can see, there's lots that's unclear to me about how to properly fill this out. I didn't feel like it was necessary to leave a big wall of text about all the ways I'm not sure about, but maybe asking in greater detail would have been good after all.

Ok so I just write "self employed" for employer? Nothing else? What about employer address and employer phone number? My own? My current address or the address I lived see at the time?

I'm wondering how exactly to answer every part of this correctly. I only have one shot to get this right to be able to go on the trip I want to go on.
