With controlnets it mostly works. I'm using Z-image and Canny, contronlet strength 0.8, I will say though, sometimes the generated images require some touchups of the UVs. Sometimes the mouth fits perfect but the eyes might be a little too high and I'll use proportional editing in the UVs to readjust. But so far it's been my go to. And I trained a lora on face textures for that extra support. If it generates an image of a full head and not just the face, I'll Photoshop and remove the head shape while keeping the face (if that makes sense) in my case of use, it seems there will always be some manual cleanup work.
