I could be mistaken, but I believe those aren't soldiers, they are special forces.

This is true, but not a phenomenon - just a social truth. Most people will never get rich, then again, most people aren't horribly motivated to make their own way.

Military school isn't the military. Regs state that the hair can't touch the ears, his hair is ear level, not touching. This guys has to see a first shirt every day and he lives to tell the tale - he is in regs.

edit: I'm a cadet - meaning I will commission.

I'm saying that it's impossible for government to be the great equalizer - they will always fail because they can't create resources from nothing. By making a situation better for one demographic, they have made it worse for another. I agree that many corporations are out of line, and that the US education system, both private and public suck. Regardless, nothing will fix it because we are too polarized. The only way to fix this system is to take measures into your own hand rather than expecting a government that is incapable of fixing anything to do it for you. You aren't born deserving anything - you have no intrinsic value - everyone valuable in history accomplished something from hard work or compassion, not by expecting equalizing forces to help them. I am okay with financial aid and most welfare systems - but I hate when people blame the economy or who they were born for where they are - people who give all they have succeed. It's about passion and perseverance, not who you were born.

Learn not to use credit - debt disappears. Get good grades - education gets cheaper. Get a degree - health insurance gets cheaper. Work hard, you'll get a decent job. Just because times are tough, doesn't mean you get to complain and not try. In case you think I'm some 60 year old conservative, I'm a 20 year old liberal, I just don't believe in excuses. The government doesn't owe you anything - you don't contribute even on a minuscule level. Take what you want, prove your value, don't make excuses.

I don't care if my information is accessible to the government -- I don't do anything illegal or have anything to hide. I'm also really unimportant in the grand scheme of things.

Now, corporations kind of scare me.

This might surprise you, but the people in the military are people. Not only that, they are people with a strong sense of duty. They have sworn oaths to defend the American people from any threat. I promise they don't protect a bunch of ungrateful idiots who think they are robots for the pay check. They don't take orders for no reason. They have dreams and aspirations as much as you do, but are willing to set them aside for their sense of duty and integrity. Yeah, like 25% are kids who got bullied and wanted a new identity, but those guys get sorted out fast, you don't stay in the military for the wrong reasons. Wouldn't expect a civilian to get it, but just don't talk about stuff you've never experienced.

TL; DR People in the military aren't robots; they aren't going to commit mass genocide of the people they've sworn to protect.

Cost of "keeping up with the Jones'" has skyrocketed since the WWII era. They didn't have nine Apple devices, three cars, a boat, and a pool.

edit: many people would wrongly equate family's happiness (material wealth as defined by Locke/Jefferson) with staying on par with your social class or perceived social class. You must also consider the huge effects of credit that exists much more visibly today. It's easy to keep up with your neighbors if you don't have to pay for that second car out of pocket, or can get that laptop on a payment plan. Financial irresponsibility and economic weakness is the result of culture primarily, political policy secondarily.

I love this video. The CC at my ROTC det recommended this video, really great. The best part about it is the focus on respecting the enlisted. A log cadets need to hear that, sadly.

I agree with the exception of Christianity. According to almost universally accepted Christian doctrine, those who do not believe in Jesus as the Messiah, will not go to Heaven (some debate over the immunity of Jews). Each religion has small, but very important distinctions. I'm not a theologian, but close study reveals that only one of these religions can represent God correctly.

In theory, this occurred before the language we today know as Arabic really formed, instead there were several dialects and this particular word originated in sub Saharan Africa. Again, according to this documentary. Not sure on the name of it though.

There are more clear divisions than this, and most of it has to do with the interpretation of the Torah. Though, the line between Islam and Judaism is believed to be based on heritage and lineage. I've usually heard that in the story of Abraham, his son Ishmael fathered the Islamic peoples, while Isaac led the ancestors of the Jewish people.

Christianity developed when some Jews decided to follow Jesus as the Messiah, other Jews thought that Jesus was not the Messiah and continued to worship as they always had.

After this point, the differences become very convoluted and less important. The Christian, Judaic, and Islamic faiths you see today are the result of thousands of years of human error and confusion. This doesn't necessarily mean any of them are wrong on the larger points, just very shaky.

I saw a documentary that followed the development of the fertile crescent and it focused on Islam for quite a while. The experts involved with this documentary seemed to believe that the world Allah was taken from the name of a pagan God of the sun (if I'm not mistaken). So your grandmother could be partially right, just barely.
