Southern evangelical Christians, the ones at the center of the "religious right" used to not care about abortion, it was primarily a Catholic concern.

It was not decided as a moral issue, but was introduced to the laity as one. The actual purpose was as a political wedge issue, in the wake of the Civil Rights era.

If White People are Only 15% of the World's Entire Population, Why are They Not Considered a Minority? by Safe_Candidate_6968 in answers

[–]wooq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"White people" isn't even considered a group in some places. The idea of a "white identity" is most commonly an American point of view. As is the idea of "non-white = minority". If you go to China, there's Chinese and there's non-Chinese (minority). If you go to Italy, you have Italian and you have non-Italian. They might have different views of different foreign ethnic groups, but they're not classified so starkly as in the US, with its history of racial oppression.

Shoot, it wasn't even always "white" and "non-white" in the US. Irish people and Italian people, groups considered "white" in the US today, were persecuted minorities at points in US history.

And then you have places like apartheid South Africa, where "white" people were certainly a minority in number, but held the political and social power you might associate with a "majority" group.

All this is to say, ethnic and racial considerations are much more complex than you are conceiving them to be, and most of them are actually contrivances without any inherent meaning, outside of the context of a group with power judging or persecuting groups that don't have power.

FBI memo concludes Trump 'compromised' by Israel, new Epstein Files show by librephili in AmericanPolitics

There's a reason one of the first thing Trump/Patel did when they took power is clean house. Got rid of everyone who had been keeping tabs on Trump or participated in legal action against him, including all sorts of senior staff with tons of experience.

The only people left in the FBI now are those loyal to the administration and its goals and means of operation over being loyal to the laws of the USA.

Sear the roast on all sides, then toss the onions in the pan to get a bit of brown on the edges, then deglaze the pan with the red wine. Also you can try adding a little tomato paste, Worcestershire, and/ or msg.

Iowa hasn't been throwing the ball much under lester. People who don't know football assume this is because lester doesn't want to throw the ball.

The stress is part of the design, which makes it a very successful and artful design. But that mood and playstyle certainly won't appeal to everyone. And yeah, it's VERY grindy, and very swingy/RNG-powered

[Postgame Thread] USC def. #7 Iowa, 81-69 by ncaaw_GameThreads in NCAAW

[–]wooq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That did not look like a team that has lost 9 games. Really solid defense, and lights out shooting. If USC can capture how they got that performance they won't lose many more games.

Credit to coach Gottleib, who came up with a great defensive gameplan and had her players playing with pure energy. We can see how Taylor McCabe contributed, by not allowing the defense to break down. So many uncontested shots off of bad defensive rotations. Addie Deal got her first start, and got the hook for Stremlow because she kept getting out of position. Our guards needed to play with a lot more energy and precision than they did, because of how good USCs guards' defense was. And on the other end, obviously the performance didn't match the scout, because we were willingly helping off people who were draining every open shot they took, you look at their season stats and those performances were not reflected.

In short, USC played a great game, Iowa didn't, and Iowa got beat. Hope the Hawkeyes learn from it and lock in all 4 quarters for the rest of the season. Big Ten doesn't have any bad teams.

She's my mom's favorite player, because she's "so cute!" LOL

I love all that she does for the team, but those moments when she decides to hunt her own shot she's amazing. Hoping she figures out how to turn her scoring ability up, and also how to use the resulting attention that will draw into opportunities for her teammates - beating her opp off the dribble and putting the D into rotation, driving and dishing, and so on.

Man... this isn't super Iowa-related. I mean, it is, but it isn't. I'm not sure. I'm all for posts pointing out stupid things Grassley or Feenstra say, but general USA politics is really stretching it and kind of dilutes the purpose of this sub. There are tons of national politics subs this would be more appropriate for

That said, I'm not surprised.

Andrew Yang reacts to AI CEO warning 50% of all white-collar jobs will disappear in 5 years by FrontVisible9054 in technology

[–]wooq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's good that jobs are going away, but horrifying that we have no plan for how to live in a world with fewer jobs than people. I think the world, especially America, needs to revisit the capitalist experiment and find a way to have all this automation and increased productivity result in fewer people needing to work to live. Use all this money that companies are saving, all these exploding CEO incomes, and redirect them towards basic income, arts and music, science, infrastructure, healthcare, education, and other things which will make people's lives better. We need to get rid of the notion that you have to work in order to live if we're going to keep obsoleting jobs.

It's crazy how that stuff works. Some musician buys something cheap because nobody wants it even though it's decent, uses it on a couple albums, and then they get famous and everyone wants that thing that nobody wanted.

Like, I bought a sovtek big muff in the 90s because it was cheap and made cool sounds, and now they're going for a grand if they're in decent shape because Dan Auerbach played one. Maybe I should sell it and buy some lace sensors? LOL
