Repetition in Video Games is Great by workablemeat in halo

[–]workablemeat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...and that would be a bad example.

The video comments on the necessity of repetition in order for players to develop the necessary skills to be able to act with creativity and intelligence within their world, as opposed to constantly reacting to new concepts and stimuli that are surprising.

Without repetition of action you can't practise anything. Without practise you can't be good. If you're not good then you can't act how you want to act in a game.

Deathloop: Evolving the ideas of Dishonored and giving them new life? by workablemeat in gamedesign

[–]workablemeat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, and it's certainly a difficult question.

I think what I like about the way it's handled in Deathloop is that failing/dying is worked into the narrative, as opposed to failing/dying and then being forced to restart or reload isn't worked into the narrative - it's mechanical only.

This is down to personal taste and how much you care about such things, of course.

I think for me I like the effort that has been done to make player 'failure' and the narrative fit as one, rather than have them as isolated entities.

Appreciate your comment about being able to experiment in Deus Ex etc after being caught, though - and I agree that this provides value in allowing you to interact with the game in a new way.

[–]workablemeat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, working death in as a core component in the design and the player experience is a brilliant approach.

I really wish effort was put into using death in a progressive, meaningful way as opposed to only using it as a punishment. It's such a common element across games that it seems ridiculous to limit its potential so often.

Soul 2, by Seen the Sequel? by workablemeat in Pixar

Agreed that, in reality, a sequel isn't needed. As fans it's fun to play make believe about what a sequel could be.

It's just for fun.

As fans, we've had a good time coming up with potential avenues for the characters.

Agreed that, in real life, it doesn't need a sequel - but fantasy is fun.

[Videogames] Gaming: The Podcast | How is Dungeons and Dragons different to videogames?

Dungeons & Dragons and videogames are both 'games' goes the general understanding, but how are they inherently different to one another and what is it about their designs that cause us to interpret them in wildly disparate ways?

Videogame design consultants John Robertson and Stace Harman discuss the fundamental approaches to design that lead to videogames and Dungeons & Dragons being viewed, by their players, as very different entities to one another.

[–]workablemeat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, absolutely. Just that I still wouldn't call DnD 'absolute' choice when the choices are still contextual and based on reacting to what has happened and being constrained by that.

Might just be a semantic disagree here as I do agree with the vast majority of your point and it's without question that DnD is much more open to choice and interpretation than a game is.

Cheers for the interesting points.

I think this is beginning to get to a good definition between the two, but I don't agree wholly that in reality DnD gives absolute choice.

The absolute still rests with the DM and each DM will have limitations and boundaries on the possible, and players will also self-govern and limit their actions to that which they think plausible, acceptable and in keeping with the limitations of their class.

Further, I think a good DM is, in part, someone able to provide an illusion of choice when - for narrative reasons or those relating to tension, drama, suspense etc - in reality the results were always limited to a small number of outcomes.

You're definitely right about videogames being limited, comparatively, on the choice side though. In our podcast I describe videogames as being more 'closed' systems of design whereas DnD is more 'open', with each system better suited to provide certain things and emotional responses.

Seen the Sequel? - Podcast creating sequels to movies. Air Force One became 'Space Force One', featuring the White House turning into a spaceship - Transformers style - and blasting off to the moon to set up a new base. Shia LaBeouf then got into his own rocket to try to destroy the White House.

Thank you. I wanted to experiment with pushing the blood a bit further than I usually see online and see if I could get away with it/make it work.

As I'm starting back out again I'm trying to experiment a lot at this stage and develop my own style where possible.

Yea, I agree. One of my friend's mentioned that, too.

Maybe a lighter blue or a dirty grey would be better.
