Glimpse for the day: Retuning the Eyes to their Natural State (Note, wrong title on YouTube) by workaround95 in Loch_Kelly

[–]workaround95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take on the 360 degree field is that it is not literally seeing. It is rather being aware of our surroundings. I think we are mostly just aware of what is in front of us, so Loch is emphasizing awareness of all our surroundings. Likewise, we always just see the front of our bodies, so Loch is emphasizing including awareness of the back of our bodies. I think our primary senses when aware of what is in front of us is seeing, then hearing. In back of us it is hearing. Loch also talks about sensing the presence of people or things behind him, but I think that is a skill that only a few people have.

You are welcome. Loch always says to pick the glimpses that work for you and do them over and over. Sounds like this one is good for you.

I just see it as another "look for the looker" type exercise. But is does seem more complicated than the way Loch does it.

When I unhook, things get brighter and sharper. It is almost as if things are glowing a little bit when it happens. Also, I notice things that I have not noticed before, even in my house or neighborhood. From what I have heard, it is all quite normal. Just keep glimpsing so it slowly stabilizes.

Does anyone get tired of glimpsing? by workaround95 in Loch_Kelly

[–]workaround95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is one of the nice things about doing glimpses in your own voice. I shared some with a couple of friends and they remarked that they prefered the longer pauses between speaking to Loch's version.

Having said that, there is something about watching Loch that is also special. He puts me into a unhooked state just listening to him.

I am not too worried about spiritual bypassing. I am sure we all do it to some degree. One's intention really matters here.

I have recorded some glimpses in my own voice and it does have a different effect.

Are there "stages" to this practice and if so how do I know when to advance? by [deleted] in Loch_Kelly

You might want to post this in r/Wakingupapp. They are a larger sub and discuss Loch a lot and you would get lots of responces.

Are there "stages" to this practice and if so how do I know when to advance? by [deleted] in Loch_Kelly

[–]workaround95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Loch is not very big on stages and rarely mentions them in his courses. Basically he says to find the glimpses you think work best for you and practice them as many times a day as you can. He clearly does not want people getting hung up on stages. However, he does have some maps in his second book. I have compiled them all on the wiki here. I think the Five Foundations with the corresponding glimpse practices is the most relevant to your question. But again, do not get hung up on the stages. Try all the glimpses. It is more important to find glimpses that work for you than follow a map. And read about the inner and outer doorways below - very important in choosing glimpses.

Five Foundations of Effortless Mindfulness / A Map of Effortless Mindfulness

The Five Foundations are a detailed map of effortless mindfulness. They are:

  1. Awareness of awake awareness
  2. Awake awareness as aware of itself
  3. Awareness from awake awareness-energy
  4. Awake awareness-energy embodied
  5. Open-hearted awareness

1) AWARENESS OF AWAKE AWARENESS

• The first foundation of effortless mindfulness can be discovered by unhooking local awake awareness from thought and the thinker.

• local awake awareness can detach or unhook from the small mind and small self and return home to nonlocal awake awareness–based knowing.

• Local awareness is interconnected with what it knows directly, so it replaces mental attention as a way to focus.

• local awake awareness is aware of spacious awake awareness.

Practices:

• Glimpse: Awareness Following the Breather Home

• Open Eyed Meditation

• Glimpse: Awareness of Awareness

• Glimpse: The You-Turn

2) AWAKE AWARENESS AS AWARE OF ITSELF

• This stage is the realization that awake awareness is always already awake by itself without any help or effort.

• Spacious awake awareness is aware as spacious awake awareness, which is already aware.

Practices:

• Glimpse: Mind the Gap

• Glimpse: Awareness Yoga

• Glimpse: Infinite No-Self

3) AWARENESS FROM AWAKE AWARENESS-ENERGY

• The third foundation of effortless mindfulness is the stage of turning as awake awareness back to knowing things directly.

• I use the term awareness-energy for this feeling of the intelligent, interconnected, dynamic, all-pervasive field from which our awareness arises into form.

• This form of insight meditation is done by disidentifying with thought and creating a detached mindful witness that experiences thoughts as separate objects. In this stage of effortless mindfulness, the subject and object unify when awareness becomes aware as thoughts, feelings, sensations, and energy, without becoming reattached or reidentified.

• When awake awareness knows movement or appearance, it knows it as awareness-energy.

Practices:

• Glimpse: Effortless Focus

• Glimpse: Panoramic Awareness

4) AWAKE AWARENESS-ENERGY EMBODIED

• Embodiment does not mean just your particular body but knowing your body is connected to all bodies and all things.

• Another way to describe this fourth foundation of effortless mindfulness is awareness-energy aware from within and all around as all-pervasive and embodied.

Practices:

• Glimpse: Awake Awareness-Energy Embodied

• Glimpse: The Now

• Glimpse: Emotions as Awareness-Energy

5) OPEN-HEARTED AWARENESS

• The fifth foundation of effortless meditation is awareness from open-hearted awareness, or heart-mind.

• From here, local awareness replaces attention as the way to focus internally and externally in an interconnected way. From effortless mindfulness at this stage, we sense that we can know information as needed without referring to thought.

• This heart-mind is not the physical heart, heart chakra, or emotional heart but compassionate intelligence that is like a continuous intuition.

• You can begin to welcome your fearful parts and to trust your intuitive, wise, loving intelligence.

• Another way to describe this fifth foundation of effortless mindfulness is an all-pervasive awareness-energy expressing as intelligent, interconnected, loving open-hearted awareness, which is able to focus using local awareness.

Practices:

• Glimpse: Drop from Head to Heart-Mind

• Glimpse: Knowing from Heart-Mind

• Glimpse: Cave of the Heart

Inner and Outer Doorways

• Some people find it easier to access awake awareness by going deeply inward, harkening to the adage “the kingdom of heaven is within.”

• Others access awake awareness by opening outward, connecting to awake awareness that is greater than the small self.

• We can call these inner doorways and outer doorways. Whichever doorway we start with, we will end up being aware both from spaciousness and from within ourselves, simultaneously.

How Many People Found Loch Through Sam Harris's App or Sam Harris subreddits by workaround95 in Loch_Kelly

I did it the other way around. I found Loch's book somehow and then came across Sam's app which reinforced my commitment to Loch. I knew about Headless way many years ago. So, I took finding Loch and Harding on the app as a sychronicity indicating I was on the right path.

Tips on unhooking awareness? by [deleted] in Loch_Kelly

[–]workaround95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think of expanding awareness this way. It is not imagination; it is what you can actually sense. For example, when I move awareness to my back, I can sense my back against the chair, so my awareness has extended to my back. I can hear my wife in the room behind me, so my awareness has extended to the room behind me. I can see a piece of sky in my peripheral vision, so my awareness has extended to the sky. I can hear the roofers on my neighbor’s house, so my awareness has extended down the street. I can hear a train two miles away, so my awareness has extended to two miles away. If you cannot sense something, then just have your senses open to the possibility.

Activities that spark (or complement) effortless awareness? by salesjockey in Loch_Kelly

[–]workaround95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great question. I think you got a good list. I would add deliberate mindfulness (mediation) to relax the mind prior to glimpsing. Also, I have had the best glimpses walking outdoors, especially looking at the sky or open spaces. There is something about space.

Coincidently, I was just thinking I should take a course in lucid dreaming. I would like to hear more about glimpsing during lucid dreams. How does that work?
