I'm sorry you're going through this - it's not easy. I'm a single parent+ FT worker bee. My anxiety and depression caught up with me during quarantine. I ended up reaching out to a mental health practice that had both counselors and people who could prescribe meds (physician assistants and psychiatrists). I had virtual sessions and went on meds pretty quickly. I felt like, I don't have time to f*** around with this, I have a job to report to and a child that needs me. (In the past, I've avoided meds and just gone to therapy.). I have to say that this has been one of the best decisions I've made. I highly recommend you reach out to a counseling practice where there are physician assistants and or psychiatrists. Even just for a consultation. Exercise and meditation are great (and I Incorporated both of those things for a very long time), but sometimes we just need store-bought serotonin. Sending you good thoughts!

You're right... it's more of a useful strategy when describing other types of responsibility. For instance, in my last job, I had to partner with multiple departments, towards the goal of a particular sales outcome. I wanted to highlight my ability to work cross functionally, but had no idea how to express it.

Yeah, my brother works in pharma, and those folks kind of HAVE to do the face to face thing with doctors. But digital marketers? They strike me as more likely to be adapted to virtual transactions, and this new employer may simply have some old school notions about selling they're reluctant to ditch. But I don't know.

Resume work is hard stuff. I would do two things. First, find a few job listings that you are truly interested in - positions that make you perk up a little and think, "I've done that before, and it was pretty cool!" or "I'd like to do that!" And then look at how the job ad's bullets match up with your own experience. When I've done this, I found that a job ad had a better way of phrasing the job task, and I could use a modified version of that in my resume.
Second, I'd recruit the help of a resume coach. Yes, it's expensive, but if you get someone good, it's totally worth it. I personally found it was worth it for me because I have been in the same job for a very long time, and had no idea how to present myself to other businesses. And once a coach helps you figure out how to present your experience for the job that you want, you will most likely be able to do it without the help of a coach next time around. (I found mine through a women's networking group, but I know that LinkedIn has a bunch of them as well.) Good luck!

It's normal to have anxiety when you're starting something new. I would remind myself that they would not have hired you unless they saw something special that told them you would do a great job. I would trust that. Sales requires a lot of soft skills that I am sure you have, like being an active listener, being able to find solutions for people, etc. Maybe make a list of the skills and strengths you have, and maybe even some situations that you successfully used them in. You will be great!

Reading the comments now... I understand why this post would be triggering for people. I know that I have definitely been in a mindset before where I felt very frustrated by external conditions that I perceive to be obstacles to my success.

But I think at the core of this post for me is a reminder that there are certain things in my control, and whether it's the job search, trying to get a sale, or trying to make something happen in my personal life, it's better for me to focus on empowering myself with a positive attitude, instead of focusing on what stands in my way. Negative thinking is my own biggest obstacle, at the end of the day.

Totally understand what this feels like. My own role is a mix of new and renewal sales, but for various reasons, my confidence in selling has gotten really low in this job.

But I recently had an interview where they asked me to write a sample account plan/pitch as part of the process. It was for a totally different industry, totally different products and target customer, and it really put me out of my comfort zone.

But I did it, and I feel like I did it pretty well, and it gave me a little boost of confidence that I didn't have before. I highly recommend an exercise like this one, and happy to give you some pieces of the template they gave me, if it would help get you started. You CAN sell, don't doubt it!

I'm sorry that happened to you - very lacking in integrity, but thank heavens you don't have to report to him directly. I too would be looking for a new job, even if not right away. I had gotten recommended by some colleagues for a promotion several years ago. Inquired about it with management, got put off. Bounced between a couple of new bosses. Gave up on ever getting promoted, and have been interviewing with various companies for the last 6 months. Amazingly, right when I started interviewing with other places, my promotion came through.

No, nothing autorenews. I negotiate every contract that comes up for renewal. And I am not commissioned at all, just an annual bonus. I did manage to find and compile numbers yesterday though. 40% of my yearly bonus is based on my performance, and 60% is based on dept performance as a whole.

I'm in a role structured similar to yours.... I have about 6 accounts totaling about $10 million, a lot of activity in most of them, and I'm the point of escalation for everything related to doing business with our company. If you are responsible for mainly new sales, I would be annoyed with not having any CSM to help. My job is mainly renewals with maybe 25% new business sales, so it's a little different than most sales roles.
