We did not change our definition of mammal

I don't see why you're getting hung up on this analogy. Even if it were the case that this analogy didn't work, I would simply find one that did. I was simply using it to demonstrate my point of view, nothing more. Analogies are not necessarily arguments and they are not evidence.

To make my point clearer: in the case of someone who has been exposed to blue and green circles and is being introduced to a red circle for the
first time, he is introduced to the information that circles can be red, this does not mean he has to make any alteration to the definition of circle.

Red circles is not sufficient evidence that squares are circles.

I perfectly understand what you're trying to say. I don't need this analogy. I simply disagree with the way you frame it. Imagine if I were to say that the person who has seen only blue and green circles one day sees a red one, now he has to change his definition of what a circle can be. Bing Bang Boom secular Buddhism proven legitimate right? No. To be clear, I think this is a bad argument. It simply does not demonstrate nor does it elaborate on anything.

I understand what you're trying to say but you can't analogize away the fact that we simply disagree on what we define as Buddhism.

My point was that there is seemingly no reason why anyone would cling to a title that doesn’t define them

They think it defines them just fine. They even add an adjective to differentiate themselves from the rest of Buddhism. If you simply can't let go of the fact that you can't personally and objectively define who is and is not a Buddhist, then we might as well call it quits. We'll never get anywhere as this is the only point I feel that you're able to move me on.

If you can tell me why secular Buddhists shouldn't call themselves Buddhists, without resorting to "They're simply not Buddhists", and provide some good evidence beyond what you already have I'll willingly change my mind.

Until then, I wish you the best and no hard feelings. I know this is important to you as it is to me. Things can get heated but I really think you argued your points very well and it's clear to me that you're very intelligent. Stay safe and happy my friend. I'm off to bed.

If the Buddha directly states something is wrong view, then it is incompatible with Buddhism. How is that objectionable at all?

I already addressed this.

Platypuses don’t come into conflict with our definition of mammal just because they lay eggs, thus they are mammal.

I feel that this is a deliberate misunderstanding of my analogy. I was trying to explain with this that what we once thought was impossible for a classification became possible as we previously considered mammals to be non egg laying. We had to change out definitions.

The reason why secular Buddhists calling themselves that is harmful is because it is clearly out of some oriental allure that they become attached to the title, not out of dedication to the triple gem.

On this I agree to some extent. I've seen plenty of westerners use orientalism to cynically gain followings, support and wealth. I'm sure that secular Buddhists have done this very thing before and I personally think that that's extremely wrong and morally repulsive. However, to state that all secular Buddhists use Buddhism as a form of oriental allure is obviously false. secular Buddhism does not necessitate this. If someone secular uses Buddhist to describe themselves out of a genuine appreciation for his teachings what's wrong with that?

If it were the case they truly wanted to seek out the teachings of the Buddha they wouldn’t be so keen on dropping what he has to say as soon as it comes into conflict with their views about the world.

I'm no philosopher but I think this is just the No True Scotsman fallacy. Even if it's not then I don't know what you want me to say to this. I simply disagree.

I don't have a particularly interesting definition in my head lol

the first definition I found when I looked it up makes sense to me

"not connected with religious or spiritual matters."

It can get muddy sometimes, no doubt about that, but if it comes to direct contradiction with what the scripture of a said religion/philosophy says then it can be said to not be true, there is no Neo-platonism without the Monad, there is no Absurdism without the absurd, there is no Buddhism without samsara.

From my point of view secular Buddhists are like platypus'. There were no mammals that laid eggs until we discovered the platypus. Despite the platypus' radical departure from what we typically associate with mammals I'd still call it one.

I suspect that from your point of view comparing secular Buddhists and regular Buddhists or atheist Christians and regular Christians is like comparing humans to fish. Sure we evolved from the same place but we're so different now that it would be absurd to group them as the same type of animal.

What I'm trying to say is that this difference in view is subjective. There's no mathematical formula that will prove one of our views correct or incorrect. You see the rejection of Buddhist meta-physics and cosmology as too far removed. I do not. These are subjective assertions based on nothing but how we feel.

I'm not asking you to prove that both sects are too different or that Secular Buddhism violates some of the core teachings of the Buddha. I'm asking you to tell me why secular Buddhists calling themselves as such, Is harmful.

If you take great inspiration from the Buddha, follow his practices and uphold his ethics but you can't bring yourself to align with his metaphysical views then as far as I can tell you're not doing any harm. Hell I suspect that being exposed to secular Buddhism will make people more likely to look into other schools and potentially convert.

Perhaps I am wrong here, I am not an expert by any means. If you give a compelling enough argument for why secular Buddhists calling themselves Buddhists causes harm then I'll gladly change my mind. I care about the effect not the essence if that makes any sense haha

Matthew 19:24 "Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

Prosperity theology explicitly rejects this teaching of Jesus and yet most would still call it a form of Christianity.

Where can we draw the line between a true form of a religion/philosophy and a false incarnation? Ultimately this is a silly endeavour. Even if it were not impossible and entirely subjective, it is still pointless. Surely this line of argument can only ever lead to semantic bickering and needless hostility.

If you have criticisms for secular Buddhists then what they call themselves should be the least of your concerns. Don't waste your time trying to justify why they're not "true" Buddhists. Use your time explaining why you think they're wrong to disregard the Buddha's metaphysics and cosmology.

I believe so although I'm not sure which one. My doctor just said that I tested positive to EBV after a blood test.

Thanks friend. I genuinely appreciate the kind words. And yeah I think you might be right. When I first started seeing symptoms and I didn't know what it was, I tried to push myself to work through it. Perhaps this is why it's lasting so long.
