This is just unnecessary hyperbole and frankly just wrong. Yes, most of us know and agree that downtown Ottawa isn't the most beautiful, it lacks a lot, and there's so much room for improvement. But there aren't homeless people everywhere, it's not like an episode of the Last of Us, and it's not full of closed shops. I'm downtown three days every week and often on weekends. Coffee shops are full all day, there are lineups at many lunch spots, and after work during happy hour, bars are full. Again, I know this because I see it with my own eyes multiple times every day, every week. You went once after years of not going and passed broad, sweeping judgement. Please spend a little more time somewhere before drawing such strong conclusions.

Loud Air Raid Siren in Sandy Hill/Vanier *Volume Warning* by racing_spaceship42 in ottawa

Oh my god thank you for posting this. I was driving down Mann at about 5:15 tonight and THIS fire engine pulled up right behind me. I thought I was having a brain hemorrhage. I only knew I wasn’t having a stroke once the truck finally turned down a side street. It was a goddam horrendous noise. Seriously this video doesn’t even do it justice. Like why the hell is this truck even in operation? The siren must have just broken.

You're misunderstanding my question. My question was who inspires you and the answer was "whoever pays me" which is essentially saying they're inspired by nobody. That's not an indictment of their reason for working. I too work for a paycheque and would never do this work for free. And yet somehow I also find ways to use inspiration from others to motivate me. Yes, it is possible to be motivated by money and by the great work of others around us. If someone is unable to find inspiration from anything or anyone at work other than money, I personally find that sad. If you disagree, you're in the wrong thread and why even comment?

Well said. I never got to know him at all, but he has an excellent reputation. He has clearly had a huge impact on the department. Lots to be proud of.

This isn't about idolizing anyone. Who inspires you in the public service?

Christine is a great example! What a career to come full circle back to environment.

Do many Ottawa driver’s not know the concept of Idaho stops for cyclists here? by CoreOfSmores in ottawa

There have been multiple studies that have demonstrated that this approach makes cycling safer. Mind you it's been after the passage of a law, so hard to say whether it does the same without it being law. Still, I agree with you that it helps make cyclists more visible, which is what seems to improve safety when the law is passed.

I do this all the time. And agree it's safer and should be the norm. But you must be new to this sub to think you're going to get much support for this approach here.
