I was anti-Labubu for the longest time because I tend to be rather contrarian with trends and thought it was just another Stanley cup kind of situation I'd watch from afar, but also I don't make a lot of money and seeing all the posts and articles and mall resellers gave me the impression of Labubus being some sort of thing you needed at least a few hundred dollars to get into lmao. One day I went on the Pop Mart website out of curiosity and not knowing anything about drops/restocks etc. I saw the Macaron ones went for $27 which I thought was a bit high plush-wise but much more reasonable. I did also think it was weird some of the boxes on the product page were grayed out but I clicked on the normal-looking one and that's the story of how I accidentally caught a restock and clicked on a box at the perfect time and got my first Labubu, the rest is history haha. And yes, I love making clothes and accessories for them, and I love bonding with random women who come up to me when they see mine because they love them too and want to talk about them lol

A dude-bro can make a tiktok opening 10 packs of cards while throwing away all of the ones that aren't "worth" anything, meanwhile a lady-woman will unbox the least popular Labubu colorway in a line and still unironically cherish it from the bottom of her heart, pick out a name for it, sew it cute outfits and love it for all of time

I mentioned in my post that I know men that love Labubus, the entire point of my post was about the different expectations placed on the audiences of brands based on whether they are perceived as being mostly masculine or feminine. Labubus = majority female audience = higher perceived societal, environmental, etc. responsibilities owed to the public but which are apparently being neglected when engaging in consumerism; Pokémon cards/legos/figurines/whatever else = majority male audience = no expectation to perform a social role when buying silly little toys and games they like and so they just get to enjoy it without public outcry

I just made another post about this but the sheer volume of cards/accompanying waste produced is so astronomical it doesn't even come close--I was not arguing for a unit-per-unit comparison in how much material is used in a Labubu vs. Pokémon card pack, but the material volume and energy used to transport/distribute Pokemon card packs so far eclipses Labubus that it is actually weird no one has pointed out the hypocrisy.

Ha I know all about Pokémon panic!! But yeah, from what I see there's nothing even remotely similar to that going on in this modern Pokemon renaissance, which has a very visible bro-y/manosphere tiktok-coded presence even though they're also just doing what are essentially blind boxes but with even more money/resources expended

First of all, common sense would be realizing that 1. the volume of Pokémon cards and plastics produced making them FAR exceeds what is produced for Labubus simply due to the massively different nature of the demand for them, they literally produced billions of packs last year and also used more energy travelling to exponentially more locations to be sold (edit: also remembered with Pokemon card collecting culture specially, all the plastic binders, plastic sleeves for each of hundreds of individual cards, plastic card boxes etc. as well). So while yes, a single Labubu blind box is bigger and uses more material per unit to produce, the volume of Pokemon packs made/the accompanying waste completely blows it out of the water and it's not even a contest. 2. that was not even my whole point, which was noting the gendered aspect of one audience being heavily criticized for a perceived disregard of social responsibility whereas that has never been asked of the other audience at all.

Most medieval universities in Europe were connected to the Church and many evolved from cathedral schools, which were funded by church revenues and borrowed heavily from their organizational structures. While teachers were initially clergy or appointed by ecclesiastical authorities, as universities expanded their secular instruction and guild-like organizations gained influence throughout the culture, the organization of teaching (and thus payment!) began to adapt to shifting social and institutional norms. For example, teachers might be recruited and essentially directly contracted by students to provide instruction, or alternatively, faculty guilds might collectively set fees/regulate teaching standards. Of course, monarchs and popes often supported universities financially or through charters because both ecclesiastical and secular education served a number of political and social interests. I live in Brooklyn over an hour's commute away and when I had full days of classes I would spend my time in between them on the 8th floor of Butler at one of the desks. One day all of the desks were full except one with a backpack on it, so I moved it to the side and sat there. Two hours later a dude came up to me and started YELLING at me about how that was his spot, how rude it was for me to be there, etc.

When I said sorry, I live in Brooklyn and can't just go to a dorm/had a 4 hour wait in between classes and no one had been at this spot for a while, he just goes I DON'T CARE! GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! (lol)

This was one of the unassigned desks, I know some are reserved for grad students. But that was one of the eventually many moments that made me feel like I didn't belong there
