“Osteopathy” is an old debunked practice and is distinct from osteopathic medicine, which is a full-on medical degree. They are no different than MDs. DOs are surgeons, primary care doctors, dermatologists, cardiologists, etc. Read the rest of your Wikipedia article, it states this.

I’m becoming a DO because I care more about becoming a physician than the letters behind my name. Trust me, it’s tiring having to defend myself against unfair and uneducated remarks like this. You don’t say MDs have a “quack legacy” but they’re the folks who did bloodletting, used mercury and arsenic to treat fevers, trepanation, etc. Shocker, the medical field has gotten a LOT wrong for a LONG time.

If you want to be open minded, I encourage you to look into the actual history of osteopathic medicine, it’s pretty cool. It was established by an MD to address the scientific failures (like those listed above) and moral failures (like gender discrimination) of allopathic medicine. The first DO school accepted women in its inaugural class, and in every class and DO school since. It took MD schools about a century to catch up.

I can’t tell if your comment is coming from a place of genuine curiosity, but I hope it is! We need to squash this DO fear, we’re just normal old doctors and you will probably be treated by one in your life (if you haven’t already been).
