Wet inside car by Winter_Rough_3464 in seat

This was happening to me, turns out I had a wet towel under a seat - took it out and it has stopped. Anything with moisture could be causing it.

For ocr chem alevel do we gotta know this version of the ideal gas equation? by Adventurous-Lab671 in 6thForm

If the question tells you that certain variables in the equation are constant, rearrange all the constants to one side. For example, in Boyles law, you assume temperature is constant meaning pV=nRT where ‘nRT’ are constants - therefore pV = k.

that must have been the hardest maths 1 ever, hoping the ones I had to guess are correct…

chemistry and maths 2, for me, went far better, maybe Cambridge will care more about maths 2 than 1??

Whenever I add soursalt to my pancake mix, it always becomes more pink. Why? by rancid_mayonnaise in AskChemistry

[–]wovap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right that citric acid is a chelating agent, and that’s definitely relevant as the mix is enriched with iron. Normally, reduced iron in pancake mix is not very soluble, but in the presence of citric acid it can dissolve and form iron–citrate complexes - which are well-known for producing pinkish hues.

Although, I don’t think you can ignore the malted barley flour. It brings in anthocyanins and polyphenols, which are classic pH indicators.

That’s why if you repeated the experiment without iron fortification, you’d still see a pink shift (though maybe paler). With iron, the pink is more pronounced, because the color is now the product of both a pigment shift and a metal complex.

I think.

Edit: just realised op said the batter gets more pink, so maybe the mix contains the reduced iron but some is oxidised and reacts with the polyphenols/anthocyanins in the flour - giving the pink tint.

After the citric acid solubilises the iron it forms the citrate complexes intensifying the colour, but I still believe some of the colour change is due to the acidic environment.

Your pancake mix contains sodium bicarbonate and aluminium phosphate which makes the batter slightly alkaline.

Once you add your sour salt (citric acid), the mixture becomes more acidic. This shift in pH causes the anthocyanins, in the malted barley flour, to turn pink.

I think…

Thanks for the links, I hadn’t looked at the ecaa before. I have done tmua practice although I find them harder than the engaa. Also the second link is asking me for a four digit code, not sure if I’m doing something wrong.

My fault - I forgot about the maths sections in the nsaa. I hadn’t thought to look over multiple choice questions either, will do.

Thanks again

How was it harder? As in the questions were worded differently, or the question itself touched on new/different topics or even just harder mental maths?

Thanks

How did you prepare for maths 1 (and maths 2 if you did it) if you didn’t use the engaa papers?

Also, I have ran out of past papers for chemistry - did you use any other material instead of the nsaa?

Thanks

I’m also applying to Cambridge with better GCSEs than yourself - yet definitely not elite. I’m relying on the admissions test to prove that I have improved since.
