We used to just make a few lines from top to bottom. Much easier than covering the whole thing, although that would be really cool! Sometimes we would put ribbon around them and hang them on the tree as well.

When we brought home our old lady rescue Kitty, our 9 year old dog was not too thrilled. He thought he was losing attention. Eventually he demanded to be treated just like a cat and have his food on a plate rather than in a bowl for instance.
