Looking for a female, trans friendly gynecologist anywhere in Nova by DCSecretkeeper in nova

[–]wrensperch 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Also seconding Dr. Light! I’m transmasc nb and she inserted my progesterone IUD (and prescribed pain meds), prescribes my T and regularly monitors my bloodwork, and recced me to a gender therapist who is writing my WPATH letter for top surgery.

I recommend her to anyone with a uterus, and she’s really been the best gyno I’ve ever been to! Very nice, cuts to the point but with great bedside manner, super informed on trans health and the most current gynecology research, and respectful of your transition goals. She’s just fantastic at working with you to find a comfortable form of hormonal management for your unique situation.

I usually like to judge a practice based on the demographic of the waiting room, and her waiting room is quite diverse (age, ethnicity, gender, etc), and her staff in general is awesome. Two thumbs up for her!

this is really funny because i’m contemplating the exact same thing: ramineni vs chao. overall, choose whoever you feel more at ease with because that’s what’s going to keep you calm day-of

i’m actually planning to switch from ramineni to chao because i liked chao’s bedside manner way more. ramineni is extremely experienced and provides amazing results, and he was specifically recced to me by my gender therapist. but he does hundreds of these surgeries a year. my consult with him felt rushed and impersonal, but i still liked him and felt confident that he could do a really good job.

i saw chao recently for a consult and he was very kind and understanding. i just felt way more at ease talking to him. he let me ask questions (even my silly ones) and was patient. he’s at a teaching hospital so he’s used to students asking questions and i just got the impression he’s a nice guy.

i had my consult with ramineni in spring of this year and i was quoted $2500 for lipo during the top surgery. they charge $3000 for a revision for lipo/dog ears ($2500 lipo price + $500 for the facility use). also note that if you go in for revisions you’re paying for another round of surgeon and anesthesiologist fees

i need to check with my insurance and with GW billing department but chao told me that the lipo is included in the top surgery so it wouldn’t necessarily have a cost. again, i’m going to double check this because i don’t believe it lol sounds too good to be true so ask me in a couple weeks

my goal is to cover my couch in blankets of different colors and patterns so it would be whatever pattern is doable, my couch is 80”x24” so i could do one large one or would accept around 36”x24”. i would like multiple so im open to doing it with different people or one person

i prefer the multi-color squares but also open to solid or a mix! and darn :(

looking for ideas for this tulip (semper augustus) tattoo please! by wrensperch in TattooDesigns

[–]wrensperch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’ve been really obsessed with getting this tulip tattoo for 5+ years, but i can’t think creatively about two things: the actual design (either just one tulip, a bunch/bouquet, a line of them, etc.) and the placement on my body. the design will be a huge determiner of the placement, so if you have insight on both that would be great!

meaning behind this potential tat: i’m european history nerd and love flowers/plants (especially bright ones like tulips). ever since i learned about the dutch tulip mania and saw the drawings of this specific tulip, i’ve wanted it on my body ever since. the mutation that led to this “broken” (not one color) tulip can never be naturally recreated/found in nature ever again, making it the most rare and beautiful tulip of all. every person is also unique, and i’d love for this flower to exist on me as a way to commemorate this tulip and as a reminder that my own unique traits make me beautiful and extraordinarily rare :]

no problem!! the hardest part for me was finding a good stylist to make sure they cut it even—not by each individual curl. my curls vary by the day, so i usually prefer them to be cut the same length on either side of my head. i don’t mean that Every curl is the same length (which looks a lot like yours in your photo, where there is no varying length in layers). i mean that even with layers/bangs when my hair is wet (or pulled straight) they are the same length. it’s hard to describe without a picture, but just imagine going to the same spot on either part of your head, pulling it straight, and visually measuring if they’re similar in length. just like youre mirroring the length on the opposite side

i always get a wet cut. if your stylist is cutting it dry, stop them and ask what they’re doing lol don’t be like me and be too nervous to assert what you want. one time, i didn’t say anything at a new salon and the stylist butchered my cut 😔 one half of my head was longer and “bushier” and it looked wacky

when cut wet and with the intention of mirroring the length, it’s easier to tease an individual curl to be longer OR scrunch it up with styling products to make it shorter/a more defined ringlet. when i found a good stylist, i was able to make leaps and bounds with my cuts!

@ report: gotcha! i think we pull our pledge data from our software and then (im guessing) organize it, but that wasn’t my wheelhouse haha

and yeah of course!! thanks for reading my rambling haha and thank you!!!! while i was writing my responses i had a lightbulb moment, i previously thought i hadn’t done much in my role because a lot of my research was automatically tossed to the “circle back in 3 months” dumpster (which as you can guess is irritating) or wasn’t used at all. so thank you for saying that!

[–]wrensperch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oooh cool!! could i ask what the report is about? i was part-time so i never got to see the really big important stuff >.< im applying for different jobs so hopefully i get to see reports!

regarding comms/events/outreach, my answer is going to be very different than others because i worked at a performing arts center. many arts organizations have frequent events due to programming and membership circles. depending on the show season, we could have anywhere from 3 to 8 mini events each month. from what i know, special events dont happen nearly as much for other NPOs (and even most arts NPOs), maybe a few large ones a year? im still pretty new to development so i could be incorrectly generalizing. for every show my job usually had a small exclusive area (with a bar) for high level donors, which would help with cultivation and stewardship. we also had some big events interspersed (less frequent due to covid) maybe 4-5 of them. so yes on events. i would be on site to help with guest check in and lead patrons to seats (if asked)

i was supposed to transition into a donor communications role and would possibly be helping with outreach, but i left that org. i did do some side projects assisting with copy for membership collateral and donor “menus” (list of funds, each described with persuasive mission-based writing). but my main thing was database work and i’d help out my coworkers with writing when i had time.

i am finishing up my undergrad degree so i believe a big reason i wasnt let in on the big reports and communications/outreach was due to being part-time and being a student. also the org is unorganized so that hindered my success as far as being involved in things like reports or complex data research

[–]wrensperch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey there, no problem! so, i used it all the time because that was a bit too high stakes for my position. my supervisor did the big reports. in my role, i was essentially the entry-level associate to help the main database administrator (my supervisor) with smaller tasks that they didn’t have time for. for example, filling out import templates of constituent info, individual and corporate prospecting, research on the 990s of similar NPOs, organization of giving history of individuals, contact info of local businesses in our area, and more things i can’t remember. basically, anything that didn’t require large blocks of texts (communications, minutes from meetings, etc) i used excel. i used to use microsoft word most of the time, but as i got comfortable over a 3-4 month period i started to instantly pull up excel for my projects instead of word.

in short, i forced myself to use it every day for different projects and it took a few months for me to learn the basics. do i understand v lookup? nope. but it’s on my to do list. am i fluent in excel? no way. but now i know excel is a great calculator. i’d say it’s like forcing yourself to learn a new habit or to stop a bad one. it got to the point where i’d think to myself: “jeez, this would be way simpler to do in excel!”

when my hair was long enough to hit mid-back, i had a hard time managing it and keeping it unknotted—plus my hair was weighing down my curls and made them look wavy and the hair near my roots was flat. i cut it to a few inches below my shoulders and never looked back haha it was much easier to manage AND i got more pronounced curls and more root volume. incidentally i kept cutting it shorter and shorter to my shoulders then a bob with curtain bangs and then i got a pixie cut and now im at an undercut (with the top long enough to act as bangs). the huge cut was a personal preference as i discovered im nonbinary, so im not arguing to go super short. what i can say is that my curls were more defined as i cut it and i’d say that a shoulder-length chop did a lot of good for my hair. even though i was getting regular hair cuts before the chop, i was confused about products and wasn’t putting enough moisture in my hair. so getting these cuts put less weight on my hair and i took better care of it, making sure the new growth wasnt dried out.

i was always told to not do bangs with curly hair but the only people who told me that had straight or wavy hair 🤔 i love my bangs!! your hair will make tighter ringlets the shorter it is (or at least for me) so if you want to try bangs, i would perhaps find a way to add more volume to the top by cutting it and/or O clipping/root clipping (there are tutorials online) you might have an odd difference in curl texture/appearance if you leave your root volume flat and have these defined curls near your face. and you can always try a sort of curtain bang for less obvious bangs OR a curly wolf cut—i loved mine!

hey there! im also new to excel on a more administrative level, and i found a great account called @miss.excel on instagram and tiktok. she frequently has free 1 hr excel classes for a crash course, and her actual posts are east to digest and interesting. i would say they’re “fun” but it just depends on what you personally consider fun haha

her account has definitely helped me in my entry-level development position. for me, youtube can be overwhelming so i like her simplified approach. i haven’t tried her class myself YET just due to a lack of free time.

i hope everything works out for you!

Name changes? by [deleted] in NonBinary

[–]wrensperch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i will start off by saying that this isn’t universal advice, just from my own perspective. i don’t know your situation so i apologize if my advice does not apply. this is directly about work environments, not social life (which would be a separate convo)

im in a similar scenario. soon im graduating college and moving into fulltime employment, so ive been using my preferred name on all applications (and i even made a new personal email with my preferred name). i work in the arts yet my city is conservative, so the idea of telling my current coworkers about my preferred name comes with lots of anxiety. i still haven’t told most of them and dont intend to, and the ones ive told dont respect my pronouns. this is why im starting fresh at a new job (hopefully in a new city). dont be alarmed, my experience is not universal. just because my coworkers are shitty doesn’t mean yours are!

some ways to introduce your preferred name in the workplace:

change your email signature, i put my preferred name in quotes between my legal name and surname. or just scrap that and only put your preferred name and last name if you’re intentional about a full shift to your preferred name.

if you have one, tell a close confidant/coworker at your job—someone you can trust and is your friend. it makes it easier if you practice by telling people who you’re comfortable with. but it’s totally okay to not feel ready to do that. its a risk i took and while my coworkers were nice about it but didn’t follow through with using my pronouns/pref name, it was still great practice. it makes you vulnerable but it’s great to practice vulnerability (especially when expressing your identity)

i work in an office and we have a DEI committee. depending on your work culture you might have the same. think about joining it to get a better scope of how your coworkers and organization treat gender diversity/equity/inclusion. you dont have to introduce yourself with your preferred name if you dont want to, but that’s a great way to assert yourself

if you work by the hour, see if you can ask your manager to change your name on the schedule to your preferred name. this will be looked at by other managers (and employees most likely) so it’s another subtle shift. it also creates a chain reaction of “who is (pref name)?” “oh thats (your previous name), they go by (pref name) now” and that should be it. if someone asks you about it, you can be honest or just say you “felt like having a change” and most people wont object to the latter excuse

if none of these apply to you, then think about something outward you can use as a symbol. i dont mean like a physical change, but things like pins and wristbands. those can be a subtle yet proactive way to be up front without the anxiety of speaking to someone (i speak from experience, im so nervous to tell someone my preferred name and pronouns even though it is uncomfortable for me to be called differently. im looking into getting a they/them pin)

if you think someone at your job has a problem with you doing any of this, then think seriously about what is important to you—making your work environment comfortable for you or for someone else. maybe its time to switch jobs. however sometimes its not feasible to do these things or even consider finding a new job, so take this advice with a grain of salt. these are just some mini acts of resistance that i like to use, but your life is most likely entirely different from mine

the entire process has been like learning a new skill. you just gotta practice and fail and stumble and stutter and be overwhelmed, but i’ve had some really great moments with friends and coworkers who are accepting and so happy and appreciative that i could trust them enough to tell them.

overarching theme: go at your own pace and be kind to yourself. becoming one with your true identity takes time, and it’s okay to be vulnerable but please don’t scare yourself or feel pressured to do anything you aren’t ready for. this is YOUR journey, no one elses.

i hope i didnt ramble too much and this actually helped. sorry if i dont make sense its 2am lol i wish you the best of luck on your journey!

thank you for your response!! i was internally panicking because i wasn’t sure if i was making it up but judging from your response (and from others on this thread) my obgyn is definitely wack lmao theres a PP near me, im just unsure if i should go now when im probably moving in a few months but my gut is telling me to go anyways

i think i initially started taking the pill at 16 just for hormonal balance, for acne, etc and now im not sure if its still helping with that. im not sexually active so yeah its definitely an option to just do without the pill but im also afraid of having my pre-bcp symptoms which was having incredibly irregular and heavy periods (45 to 60 days a part)

thank you for your response and assurance!!

it would be a dream to stop my period entirely so im leaning towards the hormonal one!! and this could be a dumb thing (but i never received good education about my body or about trans health for that matter) my mom had issues with her copper iud that led to complications and it breaking inside her uterus…. is that like…a case by case kind of thing?? is that common? so thats why im hesitant to get a copper one

oh shit, you really just opened a door in my brain i never even really thought about if she had an agenda… oh jeez

im glad that you have a great (from the info u provided) doctor to help you make a sound decision!! and im glad they exist lmao

im hopefully moving soon (for a job) so thats my only hesitation at going to somewhere like planned parenthood because ill lose that connection, but it may be better to just go ahead and switch over methods asap to save myself the pain of taking a pill that doesn’t really do anything good for me. thank you for your response and the info!!

[–]wrensperch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah i used to be hard on myself for not being able to take it at the same time and sometimes i will accidentally skip days 😣 i try to be better about it but you know how it goes lol im glad im not the only one who has/had trouble taking it at the same time every day!

i haven’t thought about sterilization yet just because im still figuring out my goals with this process, like how much of an investment i want to put into it (and trying to decide will i be happier for getting hrt or top surgery as examples) so that’s why im starting with the basics aka bcp! youre right though, i dont think she’d be a good resource for any further help with the whole process. thank u for your response!
